Elvis Andrus finishes 2nd in ROY balloting

So the announcement is out, and Elvis Andrus finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting, finishing behind Andrew Bailey, who came in first place, and ahead of third place finisher Rick Porcello.

Disappointing that Andrus didn't win, but Bailey is a worthy choice as well, and it is impressive that Andrus finished as high as he did, given that his offensive numbers weren't overwhelming...it is good to know that folks did pay attention to his sterling defense this year.

UPDATE -- The full results.

No he wasn't

Andrew Bailey wasn’t even the most valuable rookie on his own team.

Concur...

Bailey had a good year, but Anderson was more deserving than he was imo too.

I just can’t see giving the ROY award to a relief pitcher.

kindof like giving MVP to a reliever

doesn’t make much sense, but Bailey got more props for being in high profile situations as a closer. Of course, Andrus played a premiere position at SS as a 20 yr old. oh well

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

by NothinG on Nov 16, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Meh...

his “high profile” situations were closing for a team that was never in contention too. Like Wyo said, if he pitches the 8th instead of the 9th I’ll bet he doesn’t even get 5th place votes with all the good rookies to choose from this year. The save is very overrated.

Oh well, Bailey had a good year, does no good to sit here and bitch about it.

Bailey

I’m not saying he should have won the award, he is certainly a worthy choice. Forget the saves, 83 innings of 238 OPS+ pitching is very valuable.

by Darrell McKown on Nov 16, 2009 2:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

83 innings is the key stat there...

valuable, yes. Worthy of ROY with many other very good players, no.

Fuck.

I don’t understand how you can award a reliever over someone who started most games. Fuck that. Andrus put in waaaay more time, and I think our team benefited more significantly by his presence than the A’s did by Bailey’s.

by JBP on Nov 16, 2009 1:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It's like giving an NFL ROY award

to a field goal kicker, I’m not going to get too upset about it – he was very good at what he did – but, he’s a reliever.

I looked it up last week when the SBN Award came out, hitters had 2 PA’s against Bailey the “second time through the order” all year. Like Kinslerhomer says, he wasn’t even the best rookie pitcher on his team.

by Randy Richardson on Nov 16, 2009 1:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

In no way

is this more ridiculous than Jeter winning a Gold Glove. So I’m not even that upset.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Nov 16, 2009 2:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Strangely

Jeter as a GG SS this year is a defensible decision. However, the previous awards, not so much.

But still, I concur with the sentiment.

by Outworlder47 on Nov 16, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Its more defensable

Its still not defensible. He was probably the 4th or so best short stop in his league. That doesn’t sound like the best glove to me.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Nov 16, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not too heartbroken about it

But here’s my thing – say Bailey put up the exact same performance but in the 8th inning. Does he even enter ROY debate? No.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Ugh

The overvaluation of the closer continues.
I would’ve been prefectly at peace with the award going to Brett Anderson, or even Jeff Niemann. But Bailey?

bailey

sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009…ds.picks/2.html

Tom Verducci: Andrew Bailey, A’s.
I really like what Elvis Andrus did at shortstop for the Rangers, but it’s tough to get past that OPS+ of 82. Bailey of Oakland gets the call for a phenomenal, if overlooked, season. In the DH era, only two pitchers ever posted a lower WHIP when pitching as many innings as Bailey did: Pedro Martinez (2000) and Jeff Zimmerman (1991). And Bailey is only the league’s sixth closer in the DH era to get 25 saves (he had 26) with an ERA 1.84 or better and at least 80 innings pitched — the first to do it in 19 years. Major league hitters batted .167 against him, including .081 with two outs and runners in scoring position.

by Asfan4ever723 on Nov 16, 2009 2:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No one here cares about Verducci - should have used Joe Po.

I also think it is interesting that Zim finished 3rd to Beltran and Garcia

Beltran isn’t that surprising but Garcia vote suggests that Porcello would have won it if those ’99 voters had voted this year – though Garcia had a slightly better ERA+ and a gaudier win total

It is

As I sit down and look at the numbers, it’s pretty close although I still take McCutchen. Coghlan’s OBP was greatly inflated by his BA. McCutchen has more power, speed and more walks in fewer games.
