Jason Grey on Moreland
Mitch Moreland, Texas Rangers: Moreland hit .324 and slugged .536 at low Class A last year, then hit .331 and slugged .527 between high Class A and Double-A this year, and has convinced scouts here that his bat is legit. He fell to the 17th round in the 2007 draft partially due to concerns about his bat speed, but he knows how to hit and hasn't stopped since becoming a pro. He profiles as a future big league regular.

I'm not sure he is a
big league regular on a playoff team. More likely a backup DH/1B/COF.

I was probably one of the earliest supporters here
but I’m almost ready to put on the brakes a bit. I liked him because I felt like most people didn’t consider him a prospect at all, and I knew he was one. But I’ve always felt he would end up being league average bat at best, and limited to DH/1B or middling defense in a corner outfield spot when needed. John Jaha level production for a few years maybe if he’s lucky. I get the feeling some here are expecting more.
He needs to go to Frisco to start the year and get that walk rate back up to where it was in A and A+ ball. He’s got a chance to be a nice role player here, a la Lee Stevens or Mike Simms.

Having seen quite a bit of him in Frisco
I don’t think the walk rate was much of an issue. He was putting together great at-bats and still showing great discipline. If he got down in the count early, you always knew he would take pitches out of the zone, foul off close pitches/bad strikes, and wait for his pitch, which he usually ripped. He really looked like a Major League bat to me.
I agree with you a bit on the overall idea that people might be going a little overboard on him right now (although I do think he has a shot to be a solid regular offensively), but I think the main reason he wasn’t walking much in Frisco was because they were simply throwing him a lot of strikes.
Also, since this is a minor league FanShot
I did a rundown on the organization’s left-handed starting pitching prospects last week, and it’s free. Figured some people might be interested: http://rangers.scout.com/2/918653.html

That was a great read, thanks for posting.

Thanks.
Looking at that pic of Perez….what’s with that grip? Looks like he’s crossing his index / middle finger, is that the grip he uses for his change or something? Or am I just seeing things…

I agree 100% with this assesment
in the two times i saw him, he had some remarkably good ABs. He might have had one or two walks in those games, but the discipline, pitch/plate awareness and batting eye were all there.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
What are the odds that Tanner Scheppers maintains the number 46
when he reaches the Rangers? My mom is getting me a jersey for Christmas and I’m really thinking about getting his name on it. Though, MLB may possibly restrict it.

it probably wouldnt be a smart idea to buy a jersey of a prospect who barely has any minor league service time as of now
no one knows what is going to happen to him, he could struggle with injuries and never make it to the majors
"Elvis Andrus has just preformed a MIRACLE!"
-Eric Nadel, 5/4/09
The same could be said for Feliz and Andrus
they both may fail massively next season, be demoted to AAA and never see the light of day in the Majors again. I don’t want to go for a Kinsler, Hamilton, Young or Wilson. That’s too boring.

I was speaking hypothetically.
Of course I really don’t want that to happen :).
