poised the same ? in the AM thread
Why is Kirkman a “sleeper” and Ballard “closest to the majors”?

Ballard: Age?

Kirkman is 23
Ballard is 25. Bigsteve is probably correct. Ballard’s ceiling is probably in the bullpen. kirkman could be a ML SP.

I would imagine Ballard could be looked at for the bullpen role next year
Kirkman probably stays in the minors all season

Because I think Ballard is closer to the Majors
Ballard may not have the ceiling and he may not be as good of a prospect as Kirkman, but he has very good command and a plus changeup. Sure, Kirkman is likely to be a better big leaguer, but I think Ballard is more polished right now.
Kirkman still doesn’t have a whole lot of experience because of injuries and such. He has excellent raw stuff, but he still has some developing to do.

So Kirkman
do we protect him from the rule 5?

I think so.
A LHP with a low 90s FB is very enticing. He could easily be hidden in someone’s bullpen.

I think he is the only lock to be protected

Zach Phillips?
Great ERA last year between Bakersfield and Frisco. I don’t know where to find numbers on inherited runners but his numbers look pretty good. As has been his case in the past he struggled with command upon being promoted but if he holds true to form that number will come down next year when he starts back in Frisco.

ZP would be a decent get for quite a few teams
But how many teams could keep him on the 25 all year?

my guess
Phillips is probably under consideration and Kirkman is a lock.

based on Lucas, these are the players eligible for the Rule V
Alfonzo, Miguel OF nd
Ballard, Michael P 2006
Bryan, Melvin P nd
Castillo, Fabio P nd
Garr, Brennan P 2006
Jones, Beau P 2005
Kirkman, Michael P 2005
Osuna, Renny IF 2005
Paisano, David OF nd
Phillips, Zach P 2004d
Puello, Albert C nd
Quintero, Jorge P nd
Santana, Cristian OF nd
Swanson, Glenn P 2005d
Tracy, Chad 1B 2006
Whittleman, John 3B 2005
Yan, Johan 3B nd
who would you want to protect of these players?
Ballard, Kirkman and Phillips are all good candidates.

Ballard I wouldn't mind losing because of his lack of velocity
I believe Phillips is a low 90s guy I could be wrong however which makes him alot more attractive.
Right now our 40 is at 35 players so space isn’t a concern.

Others worth discussing
Tracy – He’s close enough to the bigs that some team may try to stash him on the end of their bench as a pinch hitter. How much does the club value him, enough to protect him or are they comfortable letting him go?
Castillo – He’s shown flashes and has skills but hasn’t put it together enough on a consistent basis. Thus, he’s a guy whose results make it difficult to protect, but talent makes it difficult to leave unprotected.
Paisano – I still have hope that this guy could be a #9 hitting, uber-defensive stud of a CF who at least has value as a future trade chip. Surely he’s too far away for a team to try to hide him on their bench, right?
Whittleman – I still haven’t written him off (not counting on him to make it either), but I can’t see protecting him. No way he goes to another team and sticks on the ML roster all year.
Santana – the hitting version of Castillo, lots of tools and little performance? Can’t protect him but wish he would have made this decision a lot tougher on us.
Jones – I saw him as a likely protection during the season and thought he might make the 2010 bullpen. Then he struggled to throw strikes. He does some like a potential LOOGY stash by some drafting team, I think I’m undecided on whether to protect or no.

Well
I don’t think we would lose sleep over losing Tracy. Especially with Moreland hot on his heels in a similar mold.
Castillo is too far away and has been too up and down to protect. It would take huge balls in my opinion for someone to select him.
Paisano is the type of guy I could see a team taking a flyer on. Utility type OF who is already good defensively. Especially a NL team who could use him in double switches late in games. And hes got some speed to be used as a pinch runner. If it doesn’t work out all it costs is 25K.
Whittleman I can’t see being taken. Hes limited to 3B which limits the options on how you can hide him on your bench. I think he slides through
Santana is just like Castillo IMO.
And with Phillips being most likely protected I think we would risk losing Jones who profiles very similar to Phillips. I could see him being selected. Only way I see us protecting him is if we decide to move CJ to the rotation and want multiple LOOGY type options already on the 40 for the pen.

has a Chad Tracy type of player in their system.

Yup.
The only two guys on that list worth even thinking about, imo, are Castillo (he’s got the stuff to be a good backend-type big league reliever) and Paisano (4th OF or defensive CF’er if the bat somehow miracles out and becomes anything close to decent), but both of them dudes are way too far away to even seriously consider.
If some team really wants to stash David freaking Paisano on their bench all year as their 5th OF’er/defensive replacement, then fuckin’ let ’em, man.
I’d be shocked (SHOCKED!) if he could OPS .450 at the major league level next season.

Rule 5
This would be a good year to make a rule 5 pick. Draft someone who can be a backup IF or a LOOGY and bring him to ST and see what you got.

backup IF
That would be a nice idea seeing as how little our backup IF is going to play it would be easy to hide him on the bench all year

I don't think they've been using him as a LOOGY much
He logged 45 IP against righties and 28.7 IP against lefties in 2009.

Yeah but in the minors
Especially the lower minors you typpically don’t pidgeonhole someone as a LOOGY. You want them to get as much time regardless of who they face.
