Kevin Goldstein Chat
Jake (Houston): Any hope for Rangers prospects Danny Gutierrez or Neil Ramirez?Kevin Goldstein: I think there is lots of hope for both. Ramirez flashed good stuff at times this year, while Gutierrez really has the makeup concerns over anything he does on the mound. He just has to get his head screwed on straight.Mario66 (Toronto): Would you use Scheppers as a starter or reliever?Kevin Goldstein: 100% reliever, and get him to the big leagues as soon as possible, because you know he's going to break at some point.

"because you know he's going to break at some point."
Who could disagree?
And yet, wow. The way he puts it, like he’s terminally ill or something. You just want to have all the quality time you can.

Could Sheppers...
be the guy that keeps Feliz from being a reliever for good?
Perhaps having his arm in the ’pen would allow those that think Feliz would help most in the ’pen to rethink their position.

For good...yes
For 2010…probably not
At least not the first part of it anyway. I think Feliz starts the season in the pen. If Scheppers is deemed ready around mid-June I could see them yanking Feliz back to AAA to stretch out for 6 weeks or so and bring him back at the beginning of August. Sorta like a mid season trade acquisition almost would be the effect he could have.

Re: Scheppers.
Goldstein speaks like someone who doesn’t understand shoulder anatomy. It may be inevitable, but there’s no way Goldstein has the knowledge or insight to declare it so.

And even if you do think his shoulder is just terminally whacked
why is starting any worse than relieving? I kind of think the regular routine of starting might be of some benefit compared to the up and down and go all out for an inning nature of relieving. You become a reliever because of a lack of a complete repertoire or effectiveness, not because a team is worried about your shoulder.

Well, the thought is you're throwing less innings I guess
But that is an interesting point, especially when you consider Ron’s tendency to abuse his best relievers a bit.

I have wondered the same thing.
Would a regular routine of a SP be easier on his shoulder than the haphazard routine of a reliever?

That's what I was thinking.
I thought the reason that you want to keep pitching prospects as starters as long as possible is that relievers tend to have shorter careers than starters.
I get the feeling that Goldstein is basing his opinion in part on Scheppers draft position, but I’m not sure how valid that truly is (or if he’s even doing it consciously).

That doesn't make noname's comment less valid
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

Yeah, this shoulder thing is like a meme
with Scheppers. I just don’t agree that it’s such a ticking time bomb.
