Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Danny Gutierrez, Texas Rangers: The Kansas City Royals basically gave him away because of his attitude and off-field issues, but it's a good arm that is coming back nicely from a shoulder injury. He sits at 92-94 mph and touched 95 with a good curve that he can change speeds on. He's also just 22, and with improved maturity, has some weapons to be an impact starter.
Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers: The good news is that he touched 94 mph in short stints in his return from thoracic outlet surgery, but he won't work there as a starter and his upside is limited due to his inability to miss enough bats.

re: Harrison

I sure hope the Ranger’s depth at SP relegates him to the bullpen as a LOOGY.

Me too.

Especially if we insist on moving forward with this CJ/rotation thing.

Me 3

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

Can someone tell me exactly what his off the field issues are?

I’ve seen links to Royals Review and they weren’t that in depth…

Is this kid a punk or did he just have a bad week one year?

He's just kind of a punk from what I've gathered.

Dudes from LA, so that’s probably why. I know recently we heard something about him refusing to work on his changeup or something, saying he didn’t think he needed it. And that’s after arriving in Texas.

Kinda sounds like Padilla with a little of Kinsler’s “my swing is fine!” thrown in.

He has had three brushes with the law in the last year and a half, according to the official Arizona Judicial Branch Website. In March 2008, police charged him with speeding and driving with no valid license; he pleaded guilty and paid a fine in June. In May 2008, police charged him with disorderly conduct/fighting; he was found guilty and paid a fine in December. And in June, police charged him with assault; he has pleaded not guilty and the case has not been resolved.

Thanks.

sounds like he just needs a good old fashioned ass whipping, then he’ll be fine.

The speeding one means very little to me

The other two raise some flags but who knows the circumstances. I believe the rumor is the June one was hitting his girlfriend which is inexcusable. Sounds like he just needed a change of scenery and has welcomed coming to Texas.

The changeup flap I believe was misconstrued. He was asked to work on his changeup during the AFL which he resisted and I believe has good reason to. Thats not really the time to be experimenting or working on a pitch. He was going only a few innings each time and his fastball/curve combo was good enough in that short time.

I feel that during the winter he will work on his change and once ST gets up and rolling he will work hard on it.
