Callis on Perez and Feliz
Zach (Philadelphia)
I have heard that Martin Perez might turn out better than Feliz. Is this true, and how good does Perez project to be in Texas?
Jim Callis (2:36 PM)
That could be. Feliz has a more electric arm, but Perez might have more pitches and better command when he reaches the majors. I could see Feliz as a closer and Perez as a frontline starter.

No Jim...
they’re both frontline starters.

That would suck.

Feliz closing would suck.
That’s what Tanner Scheppers is for.

Tanner Scheppers...
doesn’t have a closer’s name.

And Tanner used to be such a cool name. Oh well.

Closer is one of the very few positions in all of sports where the "____'s name" theory is reversed.
If you doubt me, then how come a guy with an office IT consultant’s name like Jonathon Papelbon be an elite closer while a guy like Colt Griffin is currently working as a strip club janitor?

that would also suck
call me old school in baseball philosophy, but i would want my pitchers, who have been groomed to be starters (and are quality prospects with multiple pitches) to be starters, relegating other pitchers (groomed either starters or relievers) with fewer quality pitches in the bullpen. Feliz, Scheppers, and Perez should all be considered SP prospects.

If either Scheppers or Feliz becomes a top-notch closer...
…we should be happy.

Only if...
…they could do it very well for 4-5 years. That’s the only way to really get their value’s worth, because even the best relievers are worth only a couple WAR a year.
And, if having you’re anticipating Scheppers becoming a relief pitcher because of concerns about his shoulder, then it’s even less likely that he lasts that long.

True
It’s just that we keep hearing Scheppers shoulder is going to blow up, so if one of them is going to be relegated to that role, I’d rather it be Scheppers.
But ideally yeah, you want both of them being groomed as starters.

Why not have scheppers and feliz as frontline
Starters. And when perez is ready there us another frontline starter. There is much mire value in these guys being starters rather than relievers assuming of course that they can handle it. We have alot of arms in our system and many of them could work out of the ’pen and become quite good. Everything starts with your starting pitching.

Or, stay with me now, Strop could close
and Scheppers, Perez and Feliz can be TORP’s. Or, bare with me now, Font could close and Strop and C.J. can be amazing set up guys. What a staunch revelation.

I doubt it would necessarily suck.
I’m sure Feliz would be a kickass closer.
I just want to see him as a starter.

dual closers
I thought Scheppers was going to be the closer. :)

I think this might be a bit greedy
but we should be greatful if any of the three becomes a frontline ML anything. but if we have the choice to groom them to be something. we should definitely groom them to be starters. this maybe stupid and over simplified but 5>1 and your closer only matters if your starter was a badass for six innings and kept you in the game.
closers arent that important and starters are the building blocks of the team. i just think moving them to be a closer should be a last resort option.

I agree with most of what you said
But disagree with your lack of importance placed on closers. They are important, but frontline starters are more so. Starters will affect 3xs the innings of most bullpen arms. Saying that, bullpens are very important, but you can piece a bullpen together much easier than you will ever be able to find an Ace.

Someone needs to be traded this offseason for less uncertain high-impact performance.

More cold water
I’m sure some team would love to take our uncertainty in trade for their certainty (if such a thing exists).
