Happy birthday, Steve Dreyer

Happy birthday to Steve Dreyer, who turns 40 today...

Dreyer was a righty pitcher who logged 50+ innings for the Rangers in 1993 and 1994, never pitched in the majors again, and has a weird stat line.

In 1993, he was 3-3 with a 5.71 ERA.

In 1994, he was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA.

So both years he was in the majors, he had the same winning percentage and ERA.

Freaky, huh?

Rangers Trivia Time!

What is the signficance of October 3, 1993 in Rangers history, and how was Steve Dreyer involved?

Is that the last game ever at Arlington Stadium?

I was there for either the Friday night or Saturday night game at that series, I believe against the Royals. I even have a “last homestand ever” pennant commemorating the weekend.

I believe the last game was a home game...

because I was at it… Definitely the Royals because it was also George Brett’s last game.

Yes it was

I was at this game, too. Steve Dreyer was the losing pitcher. The only reason I even remember his name was because I kept score in my “Last Game at Arlington Stadium” program. I remember it was cloudy, but not cold.

Dreyer pitched 8 innings, giving up 2 runs. Tom Henke pitched the top of the 9th, giving up George Brett’s last hit. It was close the shortstop, but Manny Lee didn’t make much of an effort to get it.

If freaky = mere coincidence, sure.

Yeah for Ames, Iowa!

It’s possible another 50 years will pass before another MLer hails from Ames.

Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

Plus he was "Hunter" and made a guest appearance on "Cheers"

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Fred Dryer

Apparently, it came down to him and Ted Danson for the role of Sam. I think fans of Cheers and Hunter (like myself) are glad it turned out the way it did.

Also

It came down to Shelley Long and Julia Duffy for the role of Diane.

Dryer and Duffy both ended up with guest spots on Cheers later on.

I worked...

VERY briefly as an ice cream quality control agent at Dreyer’s years ago. The stuff just ain’t that good.

"ice cream quality control agent"

Sounds like a very important and very tasty job.

Im watching the Syracuse-Cal game, I think Bobby Knight is an excellent commentator. Im very impressed so far.

That sounds like a Lewin/Knox/Grieve line right there

I’ll never forget the day Knox interviewed the fresh roasted peanuts guy who started talking about his hot and fresh nuts, which caused Knox to turn around and smirk at the camera, which then led to hysterical laughter in the booth.
