Rangers add Kirkman and Phillips to the 40
Per the Newberg:
After a couple years of missing on my 40-man roster predictions by a player or two, I got it right this time around. As I speculated in this morning's report, the Rangers have announced that lefthanders Michael Kirkman and Zach Phillips have been added to the 40-man roster, protecting them from exposure to next month's Rule 5 Draft. x x x x x x x x x x x

Good move
That would put us currently at 37 players. I liked the idea of seeing if there are any backup MIF or LOOGY type guys we could add in rule 5. Hopefully 25K isn’t too much for us right now

We don't really need a backup MIF
with Lemon in AAA.

i could see us being more active in the rule 5 this year
that is what truly poor teams do like the marlins and padres do.

And yet sometimes those "truly poor" teams can end up with pretty good players

the Marlins have hit
with uncanny regularity, and the Padres had a pretty good find last year with the infielder they snagged. The Pirates’ Donald Veal, last year’s no brainer, looked pretty solid in the AFL this year and is a good bet to eventually put it together in a bullpen role at the least.

And let us not forget that Johan Santana was a Rule 5 pick
Who drafted him from the Astros, Florida right? And then the Twins acquired him from the Marlins?

when was the last time a position player got added by Rule 5 and made it the whole season
Hamilton was a special case but it seems like it is a lot harder to hide those guys unless they are close

I must underrated Phillips
I wasn’t all psyched to have him added. I didn’t really see anything in Frisco that got me all jazzed, even to the degree of Kirkman. I guess if you have room…

Maybe the Rangers just love his make-up
and think he’ll makes the most of what he’s got to at least be a great LOOGY soon. IDK, it seems a little strange that they’d add him over some other guys. Mainly Ballard is the guy I’m wondering about.since he seems more likely to be taken in the Rule V than Phillips.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Someone said the other day that Tracy is the kind of hitter that everyone has in their system
Is Ballard the Tracy equivalent on the pitching side of things? Close enough to the bigs to conceivably be drafted in the Rule 5, but not really “good enough” to worry about losing.

If he had more velocity I would worry about losing him
He wasn’t dominant against LHP last year in the minors.

Phillips
Posted really good numbers. His walk rate jumped when he got to Frisco but if his history holds it will drop back down this next year. His past couple mid season promotions his walks rate has jumped considerably only to fall the upcoming season when he restarts at the level.
And he was much much better against LHB than Ballard was last year

so how does this work?
Can they not add Ballard to the 40 between now and the draft? Could they add him and he just wouldn’t be protected?

Not losing sleep over Ballard
Our system is deep enough that we could lose Ballard with 0 effect. Plus, we’re going to need roster space at AAA with Kiker, Beavan, Kirkman, Perez, Phillips, Poveda, Corey Young, Danny Guiterrez, Tanner Roark, Brennan Garr, Jared Hyatt, and others pitching at AA, some of whom are going to need to be promoted. Bakersfield (High A) had Bleier, Dustin Brader, Ryan Falcon, Aldaberta Flores, Main, Tim Murphy, Hector Nelo, Evan Reed, and Taylor Tufts who will be looking for AA slots, and heaven forbid a double jump to someone like Wilmer Font, Carlos Pimentel, Wilfredo Boscan, or Niel Ramirez.
Plus, where do you start Scheppers? Many people are saying we need to start him off in the Rangers bullpen, but I say, “Bakersfield”, and if he excels there, Frisco.

Scheppers
I think after that AFL debut he starts in Frisco and either jumps straight to the majors or gets promoted pretty fast to OKC
