Rangers 2010 Payroll
Using Cot's Baseball Contracts as a reference, I extracted these contracts for a possible 25-man roster for next year. Our needs going into this off-season remain a LOOGY, a backup IF specialist, and a middle of the order bat that can DH. If the Ranger's FO says our payroll will match last season's 68M, then we have roughly 11M to spend this winter. (Cot's has what I believe to be higher contracts than reality for MY and Millwood, but these are the numbers I have, so I'm rolling with it) (This assumes a 8M increase through arbitration etc)

| Catalanotto, Frank | $2,000,000 | |
| Padillia, Vicente | $1,750,000 | |
| TOTAL | $57,298,840 |
Harrison, Hurley, Moscoso, Madrigal, Eyre all figure to be apart of the Rangers 'pen if not get a start at some point in '10. Late season callups could include Scheppers, Kiker, etc
German, Boggs, Smoak, MaxRam, and Moreland will most likely be at AAA waiting to fill in for a need etc.
FA targets could include these
Position Players:
Bobby Abreu - Type A
Jermaine Dye - Type A
Mark DeRosa - Type B
Nick Johnson - Type B
Hideki Matsui - Type B
Jim Thome
LH Relievers:
John Grabow - Type A
Scott Eyre - Type B
Joe Beimel - Type B
Ron Mahay
Will Ohman - Type B
Other FA Pitchers:
Ben Sheets
Chad Cordero
Joaquin Benoit
Kiko Calero - Type B
Who would you want to fill the needed positions and how much would you allocate to them?
There are plenty of trade targets out there as well that have been mentioned that include Halladay, Bradley, Dunn etc.

You omitted raises for arbitration cases
Feldman, McCarthy, Wilson, Frankie, and Hamilton will all be making significantly more.
I’d assume $13-14 million for that group.

I've added 13 million for possible arbitration costs
alot of the arbitration raises will come from CJ, FX2, Feldman. Do you really think it increases 13M

Why so much?
Feldman probably only gets 2mil (1.5 increase)
BMac only a $500,000 raise most likely
Wilson probably gets around 3 mil (1.2 mil increase)
FX2 probably around 3 mil (1.4 mil increase)
And Hamilton probably only gets around 5 mil tops most likel in the 4 mil range. Thats only a 4.5 mil increase at most.
Overall i’d say around 9-10 million in arbitration increases. I know its only 3 short of your prediction but on our budget 3 mil is pretty substantial

I meant $13-14 million as the total amount they'd make
Not total increases

Ahh gotcha
In his chart above he has their 2009 payrolls and adds 13 million on top of that.

Which means NothingG

and Cot's has Millwood making 15M
which I thought was only 12M. That’s a big difference as well.

I'm a little interested in Thome
My guess is he’ll come cheap, and he’s very patient at the plate. He may not be the monster that he once was, but my guess is he can still put together an 800 plus ops, and still hit 30 home runs. But if it takes more than a one-year deal, and costs more than $5-6 million, I’m not interested.
That's why they call them business sox

He wouldn't address our LHP problem though
I was interested in him earlier during the MB thread but I looked at his splits and he sucks against LHP.

I hope we don't get stuck with Arias on the roster
just because he’s cheap.

sensing your sarcasm
The season wouldn’t be lost, but Vizquel had almost 200 plate appearances and contributed 1.1 WAR last season. Having Arias on the roster would replace those 1.1 wins with say a negative 1 WAR player (trying to be generous to Arias here). That’s at least a 2 win swing in the wrong direction – a bad idea.

Do you think Vizquel will
be a 1.1 WAR player in 2010?

I think so
His value came primarily from being an exceptional defender at 3 infield spots, I don’t see much reason to expect that to drop off suddenly.
I also think that Arias would be worse than a negative 1, especially if he had to spell Elvis at short.

I'm not advocating for Arias
We have German before Arias gets into the picture. Arias is not a ML player, and should not be, at least with the Rangers. Even Lemon would probably be better than Arias.
Saying that, though, I would like to sign DeRosa, who just had surgery to his tendon sheath and will be in a cast for 4-5 weeks. He should be ready by ST, but I think with this surgery, he could end up being a steal. He is a better hitter against lefties – career .299 AVG with an .859 OPS. He could DH and play the IF, possibly platoon at 1B if needed to get more ABs,

deRosa
deRosa’s problem is that he can’t play shortstop. any infield backup for the Rangers has to have the ability to play short, in case we need to pinch hit for Elvis.
by iblum on Nov 4, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i don't know that you should pinch hit for Andrus anyway
and Wash doesn’t really use pinch hitters very often, but if you were in a pinch, couldn’t MY play SS for an inning. I, also, think that no matter who you have that would pinch hit etc, they would not be as good defensively as Andrus. With that info, you probably leave him in late in the game, and if it’s the bottom of the ninth and you pinch hit most likely a defensive sub wouldn’t be necessary.

Do you think we offer him arbitration?
His last arbitration he got a million dollars. I don’t know what the procedures are since he was a minor league FA this past year but if hes gonna cost that much no thanks

I don't think he would refuse arb
i believe there is a limit as to how much lower the Rangers could offer. Something like 15 percent? So his 2009 $1.2M salary would become ~$1M. No way he sniffs that if he is let go.
The Rangers should release him and try to resign him to a minor league deal.

i think it's very possible we non-tender him
and sign him to a minor league contract with an invite to ST. Either way, we would need to sign someone else to fill our backup IF gig.

I don't think he fits on the ML roster
Our utility guy has to be able to play SS and he can’t.
He’d be perfect to park at AAA as a contingency plan in case of a Young or Kinsler injury.

I think he could play SS a dozen times or so
Elvis played in 145 games this past year. I fully expect him to be a 155+ game a year player barring injury. Our UTIL guy next year is probably the last thing our FO should worry about. With everyday players like Young, Kinsler, and Elvis the utility guy isn’t going to see very much action IMO

i agree
we should get a middle of the order bat and a reliever before the IF role player, as there will be more than a few of these guys looking for jobs later in the winter.

the organization still needs
a back up SS they can stash in AAA. Unless they plan to go with MY at SS if Elvis gets hurt.

huh?
I think having a contingency plan is a very important part of a GM’s job. Young was on the DL last year and Kinsler has had at least one trip every season he’s been a big leaguer.
And the utility guy has to be able to play SS, and Stevie German can NOT play SS – not even for one game.

The backup plan could and should be someone stashed at AAA
Frankly if our UTIL IF makes more than league minimum with Kinsler, Elvis, and Young at the three IF spots a UTIL guy would play at its a misallocation of funds. Last year was the first time Young has missed significant time. Injuries happen but I don’t think our UTIL IF spot is one that our GM needs to fret over.
German CAN play SS in an emergency.

"German CAN play SS in an emergency"
Like Gerald Laird can play 3b in an emergency.
The Rangers need a utility guy that can competently man SS, and I’d prefer that every player on the roster is above replacement level. That’s all I’m saying.

Well
German can NOT play SS – not even for one game.
That’s a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s also true that he’s only played 8 games at short in the majors, and just 35 in the minors. So he can technically play there, but it’s definitely true you don’t want him as your #2 shortstop.

Mike Young.
Didn’t it come out he had already received significant portions of his contract via bonuses and he was actually only making something like $12m? I remember there was a lot of discussion about that, but forget what the final verdict was.
