Longstanding ASU Pat Murphy resigns
Arizona State University baseball coach Pat Murphy announced his resignation today. An interim head coach will assume responsibility for the program until his replacement is selected.
"Coach Murphy has an outstanding record of success on the playing field," said Lisa Love, university vice president for athletics. "I thank him for 16 years of hard work and service to the university and the sport."
Pat Murphy became ASU’s head baseball coach in August 1994. During his tenure, he was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year four times, his teams took three straight Pac-10 titles and two World Series berths, and in 1998 he was named the National Coach of the Year.
Since the 2000 season, no other Pac-10 school has won as many games as ASU, both overall and conference games. Murphy has also had more players drafted by Major League Baseball since 1995 than any other coach in the nation.
This come as a total shock to everyone in the college baseball world. Big news.

This is huge.
Someone with a son on the team says Murphy was escorted out by security today. He’s also saying that Ken Knutson, Washington’s former coach, is the interim head coach.
I think it some sort of personal issue

I'm an ASU alumn
I worked for the football team when I was in school, and I volunteered a bit for the baseball team as a stat keeper.
Murph is a VERY polarizing figure in the athletic department. He’s walked the line of being fired for a long time — basically his success was saving him. He was an arrogant ass to everyone, but he kept winning.
He’s also had a rough family situation in the past few years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that has something to do with it.
And then there is this

Oh and this isn't all that shocking to everyone I know back in Tempe
This has been brewing ever since Lisa Love took over as AD.

I think it also has to do with the allegations against him from a former employee
that worked for him about possible recruiting violations. Even though the NCAA hasn’t found anything, they might have something brewing therefore Murphy and Love decided to get out while they can and deal with the situation without him.
I’m an ASU alum too, however I’m not worried about this team. The thing I am worried about though is that Pat Murphy brought scrappiness and attitude to this team, so I hope throughout the following years ASU keeps that attitude that Murphy built.

The more I read
the more I think this has to do with his wanting a raise and new facilities. He looks around and sees the new Dome built for football with private funds, and the new basketball facilities built with private funds and he wonders why the most successful program at ASU can’t get a new stadium.
That, and he wanted a raise. You combine all that with his abrasive attitude, and I’m not shocked that LL just decided to let him go.
