There's some Gary Matthews Jr. here, in that Byrd is a good fourth outfielder who is looking to get paid like the regular he was in 2009. His counting stats may fool people into thinking he's that guy, but he's mostly a good backup who is past his peak and played more in '09 because he stayed healthy and everyone else didn't. Byrd's power is a park effect: he's slugged .522 at Arlington the last three seasons, .414 elsewhere. Buyer beware. Be-very-ware.

Anyone know where I can watch Goodfellas online for free? Like Donovan, embarrassingly, I have never seen it.

Plus, I’d like to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm from the beginning without paying…

I signed up for the free two weeks on Netflix. I thought I’d be able to “Watch Instantly,” but it’s not available instantly, as far as I can tell. Any insight on this?

Put GoodFellas in the queue. You should get it on Wednesday.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2009 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

"Watch instantly" is pretty disappointing

Jack and Shit are about the only titles you’ll find in your queue that are available for instantaneous viewing.

I keed, a little, but other than a few documentaries, and some TV shows, everything good is no dice on the ol “watch instantly.”

Nevertheless, unless you are completely disinterested in movie watching (which you may be, since you have managed to avoid Goodfellas for 15 years, no small feat I’d say, since that film has been on every channel from HBO to BET to USA to Lifetime over the years), Netflix is clearly the way to go. They have an immaculately superior selection to your local video retailer, and their only competitor is Blockbuster, which is the biggest bunch of blackhearted, souless, Mom-and-Pop-crushing bastards. Those shitbags only refrained from jamming their bloated dicks up the customer’s asses when confronted with Netflix’s superior business model.

Personally, I’d prefer not to reward that behavior. The price and selection is the same. Fuck Blockbuster.

I just go to a Redbox...

Usually if I want to watch a movie that I don’t own, especially an older movie that I know will be at least decent I’ll just go buy the damn thing. You can find a shitload of movies for $5 or $6 bucks now. Of course I own around 700 movies. It has kind of taken over the roll that card collecting had for me when I was a kid.

With as many movies as I have, I’m my own Blockbuster.

Well, it was a remake

It remains up for debate as to how faithful they shouldawoulda been to the original.

I think the unrealistic part of the 3rd act was Nicholson going to the buy, not the elevator scene. The idea that a boss of a major criminal organization in America would put himself on the scene where product and currency change hands is the height of cinematic bullshittiness, But again, that’s how it went down in the Hong Kng version.

And “meh” on Iwo Jima.

The Departed
Letters from Iwo Jima

Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss fucking Sunshine? That was one of the shittiest movies I’ve seen in years. Volver and The Fountain (which I’ve come to enjoy more) could have at least been on the list instead of that steaming pile.

I think the problem was there were enormous expectations after Amores Perros, which, if it was going up against the 06 field instead of 01, might have had a pretty good claim for Best Picture. I still prefer it to Crouching Tiger and Gladiator.

Little Miss Sunshine was just fine

Very good acting although the ending was a little too happy for my taste.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

There are a probably a couple dozen different references or critics or lists that would be significantly more persuasive

Probably 10 million people think Derek Jeter is the best defensive shortstop in the American League. That doesn’t make it so.

The AFI 100.
EW.
Rolling Stone.
Time.
Film Threat.
The Oscars.
The Golden Globe.

Major critics in no particular order like Ebert, Turan, Corliss, Scwartzsbaum, Glieberman, Burr, Lyons, Schickel, I dunno.

I DO know that IMDB is a bit of a joke. The rankings are notoriously generous. IMDB is a great gauge of what movies are popular . Quality, not so much.

Well, you gotta have an adblocker of some sorts if you wanna watch TV online

Because while these sites have what you want, they’re utterly littered with ads. Firefox + adblock plus is probably the best way to go, although I use Opera + fanboy’s adblock list because firefox eats too much of my comp’s resources.

As far as your comp freezing up though, that might’ve been because you don’t have the DivX player. Did you actually make it to the page with the video, or did it go kaput before you got there?

you should really get Netflix

I pay 14.99 for the 3 movie plan. I cancel it in April when the baseball season starts, because I’m watching baseball every night. I’m not the biggest movie watcher around, but still burn through 10 movies a month October-March, plus more on watch instantly.

But that's like telling

a high schooler that he shouldn’t take advantage of 21year old brother buying him beer whenever he wants. Say what you want, but its not going to stop him from asking Big Bro to buy him a 6 pack

well

Actually that’s semi-legal. Its of course morally irresponsible of the adult big brother, but legally, you are allowed to drink alcohol in your own home below the age of 21 (down to something like 13 or so), but you are supposed to have your parents consent. A living adult relative is many times accepted in place of parents.

I don't see how that anaolgy equates to watching back episodes of TV for free on the internet.

Kind of a silly analogy.

The bottom line is it's out there.

Most of the time in multiple places. And there’s no real penalty that is going to be leveled against you for using it.

So why should I, having discovered it, ignore it and act as if I’m above using it? Does it make you a bad person or something? Are you going to hell for it? Are you killing kids in Africa or costing millions of people in Hollywood their jobs by watching it? I kind of doubt it.

On something as laughably insignificant as free online streaming.

Fuck, we do it here at LSB for any game we can get a stream on.

(long subthreads have looked this way for quite awhile now and people know it, I think your “reputation” will be safe)

But it kinda serves you right for trying to jump in on a silly matter which has already been driven into the ground.

but there are some movies/music that look decent at best that I’ll stream just for the hell of it…If something is well-made, I have no problem spending money to see/hear it.

is it?

If you got into my car, picked up my iPod, listened to some tunes, then left the iPod there and walked away, then I wouldn’t know or care. That’s more analogus to whats being described there. Stealing involves depriving somone of something. They still have their movie, and can still watch it. But you can too.

And as long as the person giving it away doesn’t get compensated from it, the legality gets very questionable.

The problem here is that the MPAA would have you believe that sharing movies eats into their revenue streams. Which is patently untrue. In many ways, it improves their revenue streams. In my case, I don’t watch alot of movies, but have several kids, including some younger ones. I let the older one go out and torrent newer movies. If he comes to me and says, “this movie I just watched is awesome” and its still in the theaters, I might take my kids to it, or if its on video, buy the video. If he couldn’t torrent it, I’d go to and buy many fewer movies.

The idea that piracy of movies or music or whatever enhances revenues is crap and has been thoroughly debunked.

Yeah, I've never had that problem

Probably because of my adblocker. The Internet’s a completely different place without an adblocker, as I’m occasionally reminded when I’m forced to use a different computer.

I think people are too negative about Byrd

He was a full time player in 07, playing pretty much everyday from when he was called up at the end of May. In 08, there was the slump plus the early season injury, but, again, he was playing pretty much everyday from that point forward. Byrd will likely get overpaid for the final year of his contract, but as long as its a 3 year deal, he’s going to be worth the money for at least the first couple of years.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I don't think...

Sheehan is being unfair to Byrd. In fact, I think he’s spot on.

I don’t think Byrd is worth 3/20. Not sure if he’ll get that much, but we will have to see.

I think he's a good bet to be worth that much

if you look at the whole body of work in those 3 years. He won’t be a bargain or anything, but he would be worth that contract for a team with a need for a versatile OF and money to spend this offseason.
