Have fun with that smirking SOB.
I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.
Are Omar and Andruw like a packaged deal now?
You get one you have to take the other?
Good Lord
Smart money is on the Chi Sox for Blalock and Eddie’s services too.
That's why they call them business sox
I'm still hoping
we sign Endy Chavez. He’d be a perfect 5th OF.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
why?
he is consistently ranked as one of the best defensive OFs in baseball and could probably be had for an NRI. Plus his supposed offensive potential wouldn’t lure Warsh into playing him too often.

true
but I don’t want to just give Boggs the fifth OF spot. Might as well add some depth in AAA in case someone goes down with an injury. As I’ve said before, Austin Kearns makes some sense as well, and he’s no defensive slouch himself.

Meh
Gentry play just as good D as Chavez and has some upside. Yuck on Kearns.

+ 1 Gentry's got a cannon out there...and pretty good range..from what I recall
Good help doesn't come cheap.

actually i'm glad you said that
I had meant to ask how Gentry grades out defensively.
I mean, we are talking about NRIs and AAA depth here. I’m not going to throw out names like Cameron and Bay. These guys aren’t even taking spots on the 40.
Kearns strikes me as a guy who could eventually rebound, and those are the types you bring in for a ST look.

As an NRI, I'm not too opposed to giving him a shot
I just don’t see much value in a 32 year old who has never hit to be our 5th OF when the team could take a chance on someone who has some better potential or at least could serve some other purpose
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

if you get too big a name
you risk the Andrus Jones/Sammy Sosa situation again, and until we get a manager who understands splits and platoons, it isn’t worth it.

Or when he's released by the team

Jones' '09 Value
Despite his terrible season, Fangraphs still had Jones worth $3.6 million last season.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Nov 25, 2009 3:00 PM CST reply actions
That's only how much they say he's worth
They also say Everth Cabrera was worth that much last season which I find baffling since he had a horrible UZR at SS and was only worth .4 wins with his near replacement level offense. Casey Kotchman was also apparently worth 3.6 million last season thanks to his “superb” 1B defense. Because we all know that good 1st base defense is worth a 3.6 million dollar deal.

I love how people find a way to bitch about a guy who costs $500,000
Thats barely over the rookie minimum. If Ozzie bats him in the 7th hole and gets 10-15 HRs from the guy thats half a mil well spent.
Where we fucked up was hitting him cleanup all the time. With our lineup last year struggling to get on base a low BA/above average SLG isn’t the right guy for cleanup. But in the 7 spot its not that bad.

Yup
its unbelievable.
For his price he wasn’t terrible. How he was used was fairly silly though.

I really, really don't get the bitching about Jones here.
Someone really needs to explain it to me. Were there high expectations? Why?
I think just outlined it below
He hit .194 with a 718 OPS after his first 8 games, while hitting cleanup 51 times.
Although that’s really more of an indictment on the manager than it is Jones.

I'm not defending Wash here, but
with the collapse of Hamilton, Davis, Blalock and the catcher’s spot, the batting order pretty much became a mess and there really weren’t a lot of options. For some reason, Cruz didn’t hit well in the 4 hole and after it became apparent that Jones wasn’t going to fill the need, Byrd became the 4 hitter anyway and did well in that role.
I think it's because
he was overplayed.

Yeah
he was fine for basically no cost. His production was worth quite a bit more than they spent on him.
I guess a year from now Kenny Williams will be sniping at Jones for his pudgy smirkyness.

He was fine until he got really fat again and only swung for the fences

He was fine for the first two weeks or so
Then he hit .194/.299/.419 over the remaining 74 games.

Literally the only value he brought to the team after his first 8 games.
The real disgusting part is a certain someone who shan’t be named hit him cleanup in 51 of those 74 games afterward.

I had to go to South Side Sox..
to see what the reception for ‘Druw was like, it’s mixed at best. There was a little ribbing about their bench getting a little long in the tooth with Viqzuel and now Jones but some people think ‘Druw is older than he is maybe cus he’s fat and bald. No he just looks old Sox fans, he’s only 32. Also since he’s been around so long I’m sure plays into it.

Good help doesn't come cheap.

The "Resume" factor
It’s funny how the Chicago press is doing what the Texas press did. Rant and rave about how GREAT Andruw WAS. But does it really matter in 2010? He’s certainly lost something.
So glad he’s gone. I’d prefer Tommy Dunbar over Andruw J.
