Shake-Up with Rangers TV & Radio?
Now that the play-by-play position is open with the Frisco Roughriders... what does this mean?
Did they just get rid of Scott Garner or will he join the big club?
I hope this isn't the case... but my gut wonders if Garner will join Eric in the radio booth, Dave Barnett moves to TV PBP to join Tom and Josh Lewin doesn't have his contract renewed. Especially since Garner did a few Rangers games last season.
Like I say, I hope not because I like the pairing of Lewin and Grieve, and do not like Garner. The Barnett experiment on radio failed miserably last season. Just wasn't very good.
What would you like to see happen with the Rangers radio & TV?

barnett was HORRIBLE on the radio last year
also, i doubt the rangers non renew lewin, if anything he may be going on to bigger/better things than the rangers if anything (which has been rumored for a while)
i couldnt listen to the radio (even w/ nadel, who i love) cuz of barnett.
i just hope they boot barnett. how can they bring him back after how horrid he was last year?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
Barnett
Major disappointment. Never seemed to get the pacing for the game right.

Lewin and Greive
have great chemistry together when you watch a game. It will be a shame if Lewin isn’t brought back. I used to think they were really bad, but since I’ve been watching other broadcast via MLB.tv, I’ve realized that they are pretty good compared to the alternative.
Barnett was awful. He seemed monotone and unenthusiastic at times, and some of those times were on exciting plays. I would listen and thinkg, “What?! That was a homerun?!”
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
dont forget the delays!
crack of the bat, yell of the crowd, fireworks go off, kinsler rounds third
………….then barnett announces “long drive, back…at the track and its gone” about 30 secs late lol

Barnett
used to do a lot of big 12 and swc bbal right? I think that was him. I always liked him as a basketball announcer and was surprised that he disappointed me so much as a baseball guy.

This is just a rumor
heard 2nd hand from a guy is “connected” in the broadcasting world, but he said Lewin’s contract is not going to be renewed. Take that FWIW, which admittedly isn’t much.

So we are
probably looking at a Grieve/Barnett combo then?

i'll have to turn on the radio
and hopefully it will be synced up enough with the TV broadcast.

If that happens than

Yeah i had
MLB extra innings in 08. Saw a lot of games and listened to a lot of boring announcers. It made me appreciate Lewin a lot more.

renewed?
It is possible that Lewin wishes to go onto to bigger things. He does Chargers football and Fox Sports baseball. Rangers broadcasts might be holding him back from a larger national gig.
|Space for Rent|
That would be most likely
I can’t imagine that the club would be interested in getting rid of a rising star like Lewin. But calling 162 MLB games is quite a burden and he may be in a situation where, if he doesn’t have that weighing him down he can move into more prominence with Fox as a national broadcaster, doing Saturday baseball and college football.

He lives in Southlake and has 2 young kids
I really doubt he wants to leave. I of course have nothing to back me up on that except from what he’s said on the air and other places about how much he loves the area.

RIP Lewin
He’s grown on me only because he’s been a part of my Rangers experience for a long time now. Lewin is a serious contributor to the Rangers’ hokey-factor and for this reason I will celebrate his departure (if indeed it happens).
Next up Jim Knox, Rangers Captain, Built for Fun, and the dot race.
Enjoy San Diego Josh

I don’t mind the Dot Race especially with the “live” dots running from LF…a concerted effort, however, should be made to get rid of the wave in the next season. The wave is a menace and must be destroyed!!

I have grown to like
Grieve and Lewin but the silence on this issue is deafening which seems to me to show that Lewin is not coming back. Garner is not that bad. The Rangers are probably wishing they still had Scott Frantzke because he is doing great work with the Phillies and he wanted to be here. I also like Steve Busby when he works with Eric on the radio but I doubt he would want the job fulltime anymore or he could probably have it.

i would be really displeased if lewin didnt come back. he is kind of hokey, but i think it spices up the broadcasts and let’s face it over a 162 schedule it’s nice to have some interjections of color to compliment the monotony of the game.
If he doesn’t come back I hope they go with a bold choice, instead of a barnett type. Somebody young, somebody non-white, somebody with an interesting perspective that can hopefully build some rapport with grieve.

do you include non-white? Can a white guy not be young with an interesting perspective? If you have someone in mind, please state the name.

sure, a white guy can be interesting. josh lewin is a prime example.
forgive me if i wasnt clear, but i didnt mean necessarily a candidate with all those characteristics. They were just some possible ways they might throw a wrench in the existing prototype of old, pompous, monotone white guys that seem to dominate the booth. I dont have a particular name though, but surely there are candidates like that out there.

I would be severely disappointed if Lewin did not return
He’s so corny that hearing him and TAG go back and forth is like watching the game with a couple of friends at the bar, but with less cursing (unless you’re TAG coming back from a break)
And anyone who has heard Lewin do play-by-play for the Chargers or during Fox Saturday games or playoffs know that he is a real talent in the booth and I think he enjoys doing the broadcast for the home team b/c he can let his hair down and be himself and that, to me, makes the game more enjoyable to watch.
And can you imagine anyone else doing the call of ‘Ballgame!’ after Byrd’s walk-off GS against the Yankees in ’08? Yeah, me either.

I think Lewin is great. After living in another city for 5 years, you absolutely appreciate not having boring announcers.

and when you watch a game that Lewin isn't there
Tag seems like he isn’t there either. Lewin brings out the stories and the personality from Tag that other play-by-play guys can’t do.

I would be glad to see Lewin go.
I ’d love it if Barnett replaced Lewin on TV. Barnett was horrendous on the radio but I really enjoyed him when he filled in for Josh.
Josh, to me, is part of the whole candy-coated baseball, suck in the average consumer type of ideology. Same with all those crappy interviews Knox does and the stupid ad campaign they had this season. Chuck Morgan says the stupid ad campaign is going away. I’d love it if Knox and Lewin did as well.

Yeah i didn't mind Barnett on TV
Hated hearing him on radio but on TV he was alright. He seems like the type that does better when the audience can see what hes explaining. With radio you have to explain so much which is what makes Nadel so amazing. I would hate to see Lewin go but if they replaced him with Barnett I wouldn’t be too upset about it
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Barnett
He just can’t seem to speak fast enough to get across all of the information required on the radio.
Also, he just doesn’t care about setting the scene. He drove me crazy with “Boston is leading the Yankees by 2 in the 7thswing and a miss strike three!”
Ugggg.
I agree with everything you said there
Knox and Lewin both seem like good guys, but whether it’s their doing or they’re just doing as asked, I really do not enjoy all of the mindless babble and pointless diversions.

I hope we don't lose Lewin.
He might be a bit high-pitched, and hokey.. but he has his Gus Johnson freak-out moments which are always fantastic calls.
If we hire a PBP with a slower pace, it’s going to kill the broadcast with the already slow-paced Tom Grieve.
I recall reading an interview with Nadel awhile back...
In this interview it is mentioned that Nadel was, at one time, on the TV broadcast. It doesn’t seem he liked it very much. Based on that interview I don’t think Nadel on TV will happen any time soon.
I agree
I went with the first choice, but I am not a fan of either Barnett or Garner.

If I preview first, I get the SBN error page
If I just hit ‘post’ my post is put up on the board successfully.
Sunny - I know he couldn't do it permanently
but Sundberg filled in on the radio broadcast a time or two and I enjoyed him. It wasn’t that he was a particularly talented broadcaster but he would give out some of the organization’s thoughts that were pretty insightful. Not so great with the play by play but his comments really gave a sense of some the behinds the scenes stuff that you normally don’t hear.
In particular, I remember him commenting after an Ian Kinsler triple to right center field that he was such a better hitter when he used that type approach and that the organization had made it clear to Ian that he was expected to do that more often. That game was mid summer or so and I noted that it was an isolated incident which makes me think that the org is trying to coach him up and he is resisting like a hard headed stubborn jackass.
I realize this post doesn’t really fit the thread, but whatever…

Lewin and Grieve, as much as I complain about them sometimes, are my preference on TV
Barnett is fucking terrible, but I’ve always thought the Frisco broadcasts where pretty horrible too, so I can’t really say I’d prefer Scott Garner on the radio with Nadel.
If we have to put up with an entire freaking season of Barnett on TV and Garner on the radio though, we’re in trouble.

Lewin’s contract with the Chargers runs out at the end of this season and it’s very likely the Rangers will ask him to commit full-time to this job in order to go forward.
