Depends on the cost

Smoak plus what else?

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Nov 3, 2009 12:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't know that they'd be chomping at the bit for Smoak

Part of the motivation for moving Gonzalez is they have Kyle Blanks waiting in the wings, and Blanks (like Smoak) can only play 1B.

Originally "champing"

It’s been bastardized so much, that it’s actually becoming acceptable to say “chomping”. The same could be said of “ain’t” which now appears in the dictionary.

i get what youre saying

about ‘champing’ being in the original usage, but i fail to see how ‘chomping’ isn’t also correct. They are pretty much exact synonyms.

Which is why I called it a "nitpick"

It’s not as bad as saying “free rain” or “free reign”. Or “intensive purposes”. Or “circumnavigate the problem”. All of which are clearly wrong.

i would love to get Gonzalez

it would most likely take one of the Perez or Feliz. I don’t do that when we have Smoak on the verge of contributing at the MLB level, and pitching is king. These prospect pitchers are unique especially in terms of the Rangers. If they want a few of the Kiker types, I’m all for it, but that won’t happen.

Puh, I hate the bitter taste

From a purely emotional position, it would hurt to give anything up for him as I feel the Padres owe the Rangers big time. I fear anyone the Rangers give up will turn into the next all star for the Padres, and AGon will lose his power stroke and become strike out happy trying to mash. Irrational fear, I hate it.

that's why you don't do it

if anything, we could trade for Dunn and have him for the year, get the two draft picks (1st rounder and supplemental 1st) when he becomes a FA and he would cost less in prospects. He may still cost a decent amount, but it should be a boatload less than AGon.

What I would offer for Agon wouldn't be accepted

and that’s fine

Kiker, Main, Moreland, and a ptbnl. There’s no way they take that, especially when Agon’s value is at an all-time high, and he is still controlled for the next 2 years at a reasonable price.

Here’s an example for you.

You (incorrectly) believe that JD screwed up by sending Galarraga to Detroit. The following off season, JD sent Laird to Detroit.

See, it’s not that difficult to answer a direct question. You should try it sometime instead of running away everytime you’re proven wrong.

tball said JD seemed like the type who would quickly swallow his pride (making one of the worst trades in recent MLB history would require swallowing a lot of pride) and I think just the opposite.

One of JD’s greatest weaknesses as a GM is his stubbornness and inability to admit when he’s wrong. See Ron Washington, The Sosa and handling of Chris Davis this year.

in fact I’m not sure I could see JD moving one of the big-time prospects unless we get a quality arm in return, not bat. Can’t you see it now: “we finally developed pitching and you traded it away!”

I just don't see

the team trading for a 1B when we have Davis here and Smoak on the way. Neither are nearly as good as Gonzalez, of course, but if you’re going to trade for someone of that magnitude it’d be better to focus on a position of greater need for the talent you’ll have to give up.

Every trade isn't going to bring back only pitching

With our current dearth of positional prospects in the upper levels (Smoak excluded) we are in a position to trade surplus pitching for a high quality bat. Now I don’t think we would be in the market for AGon but if there was someone out there that could fill an area of need or upgrade a current position I could see us trading away pitching for them.

by bigsteve on Nov 3, 2009 2:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with your logic

I just don’t see it happening. I think JD has been very reluctant to trade away any of his pitching prospects and will continue to be until a few have succeeded in the Majors. I thought it was a mistake that he handled the catching situation the same way but I think this is probably the best approach for pitchers.

I personally would much rather trade for Milton Bradley instead of having to give up at least 2 of Holland, Feliz, Andrus, Smoak, Perez.

Can we give them Adam Eaton and Aki Otsuka?

They can even keep Chris Young.

Not mediocre. Right about average

Can you imagine what would happen if...

JD traded Smoke (or some other top prospect) in a deal for AGon and then AGon failed to produce here while the prospect was extremely successful for SD?

If I’m JD, I have to have that in the back of my mind when considering any trade involving AGon.

Has there ever been a GM on the wrong side of a bad trade involving the same player twice? Did he keep his job?

"What ... 92 miles per hour?" Feldman scoffed. "That's not gas. Feliz throws gas."

Or even Smoak.

If he traded Smoke and some B+ prospect like Bill Mirrors, he’d probably be OK.

i'd prefer we stay away

if hapless SD fucked us in the ass twice on a trade involving A-Gon (and that’s what they’d do if they are asking Cleveland for Sizemore plus) it would be too much to bare for me. I’d prefer we leave this old wound closed.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

apparently Iwamura is about to get dealt to the Pirates

from the rays. I didn’t see any word on who the pirates were giving in return.

Jesse Chavez, a reliever, is the player the Pirates are sending to the Rays

What?!

They have Ramon Vazquez. Why would they need Iwamura? :)
