Angels re-sign Abreu -- reportedly 2 years, $19 million
The Angels have signed Bobby Abreu to a 2 year deal, reportedly for $9 million per year for 2010 and 2011, and with a $9 million team option with a $1 million buyout for 2012.
I think there were some folks who were interested in the Rangers pursuing Abreu as a cheap one year option at DH. As it turned out, he wasn't real cheap, and he didn't take a one year deal.

well, the die is cast
the Angels apparently aren’t planning on sitting idly by as the kids on the Rangers and A’s duke it out for the division.
Abreu was quite good that year, and it was pretty obvious he wasn’t going to be the bargain this offseason that he was last. 2 years/20 million is pretty steep for a guy who really is going to be their dh; but he is a good player and the Angels are far better with him than without

Ugh
To me this just highlights exactly what the Rangers can’t do right now.

Meh
.286 EQA for Abreu in 2009. .283 in 2008, .280 in 2007.
And he’s entering his late 30s.
I wanted them to get Abreu in 2006. I’ve always liked him.
But with his power disappearing, and the aging curve, this doesn’t seem like that great a contract for the team. Good deal for Abreu, though.

I don't mean I wanted Abreu
…what I meant was get free agents in general. I’d like us to be ready to fire off $19 million starting the day FA’s declare and continue from there, if need be, but that is not possible.

"this doesn’t seem like that great a contract for the team."
I agree with that statement, but teams like the Angels can worry about signing good players, rather than trying to find players that will sign good contracts.
If Abreu gets lost at sea and never plays another ML game, I doubt that contract will have much impact on anything else the Angels want to do.

thats the key
is the angels can afford to take the hit if the contract goes south. just look at the gmj contract.

What kind of deal do you think Lackey will get?
90 Million over six years is my guess

they've got 3 more crucial FA's
Figgins, Guerrero, Lackey. it will be interesting to see how many of them come back.

On par with Abreu?
by FuturePants on Nov 5, 2009 3:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Vlads injuries the last couple of years should lower his price down a tad,
I bet he gets a two year deal but maybe 7 or 8 mil per.
I could see a team doing a one year with an option for a second year also though.

What is he, 35?
I guess I’m not terribly surprised he got a 2yr deal, but $9million/year? Especially when they have other players hitting free-agency? The guy is talented, but I’m not sure if I like this deal if I’m an Angels’ fan (which I’m most certainly not)

Forget
Who Abreu is, his age, his past performance, however you expect him to perform this year….
Doesn’t this seem incredibly stupid for the Angels to be dishing out that kind of a contract this early in the off-season? It seems to me like it would have made more sense to let the market begin to establish itself. This is certainly not as bad of a deal as the Cubs gave Bradley, but I feel like this deal could have been made later in the off-season and maybe for less money.
Just a thought.

patience is a good idea this offseason
but if you get a good deal, you take it and we have to find a true impact bat. Abreu is one less of those now off the FA market. If we can’t sign one, we have to trade for a bat. I’m not talking about an Andruw Jones type either. I hope Hamilton rebounds, but I don’t think we can count on him.

for a team like the angels, i think it makes sense to go ahead and sign the guy. The market could sputter, but you might as well get your guy early if he is there for a price you are comfortable with. As someone mentioned earlier, they can afford to pay a little surplus to get the guy they want, and if it turns out they overpaid, it shouldnt be a significant loss or impede their other offseason plans.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Nov 5, 2009 5:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Teams don't have that much time to negotiate with their own free agents once the offseason starts
The Angels didn’t have the luxury to wait for the market to shape up before Abreu was going to be on the market for everyone. If they really wanted him, better to risk paying a little over market value rather than not get him at all.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

if the Rangers wait til next season for waiver wire claims
we’re in trouble. did you mean non-tender’s.
the organization does need to make some moves this offseason, partly because the players need to be given confidence that the FO is trying to help this team when, and frankly, more importantly because the Rangers have needs that aren’t going to be address via the waiver wire.

only 9 teams increased their attendance
maybe only 4 of them grew significantly. The other 21 teams obviously had a lower attendance, but the majority lost a considerably higher percentage than those gained. For instance, the mets lost nearly 900,000 in attendance this past year while all the teams that gained attendance only gained around a combined 970,000. This should affect alot of teams.

Vlad isn't a project for ANY hitting coach
you just hand him a bat and point him toward the plate. He’s going to do what he does, regardless of how much coaching you try to give him or who it comes from.

A lot of our chances for the division next year kinda hinge on how well the Angels can duplicate their career seasons from this year
Unfortunately, the chances of them carrying that success over probably just went up a smidge. Oh well.

By the way
Is anyone else having a problem with the site not loading all the way? On both the home page and the comments page it’s getting right up to where it has 1 item left to load and just stops.
The result seems to be I can’t use the reply button in the threads. Which is really fucking annoying, obviously.
I’m using Opera 10 if that makes a difference. I’m about to switch to Chrome and see if that makes a difference.
