Friday morning Rangers stuff
Clint Hurdle has been hired as the Rangers hitting coach, and Jeff Wilson writes that Hurdle wants to focus on the hitters' approach, rather than on their mechanics.
Gil LeBreton says the Rangers have hired Hurdle to be an offensive coordinator as much as anything else, wanting players to be more situationally aware and have a more "team-oriented" approach.
Five Rangers filed for free agency yesterday -- Marlon Byrd, Hank Blalock, Pudge Rodriguez, Eddie Guardado, and Joaquin Benoit. Byrd, Pudge and Benoit could all be back, although Benoit would likely be on a minor league deal.

Well...
they sure as hell weren’t going to pay him 12 mil for next year.
I’m interested, depending on the cost.

Take that back.
If Dye signs with the Rangers, the lineup would look something like this…
CF Jermaine Dye
RF Jermaine Dye
LF Jermaine Dye
DH Jermaine Dye
1B Jermaine Dye
2B Jermaine Dye
3B Jermaine Dye
SS Jermaine Dye
C Jermaine Dye
P Jermaine Dye
This team should not have any former A’s player that Wash is in love with.

2009 Dye
.250/.340/.453
102 OPS+
141 games, 574 PAs
vs. LHP: .292/.397/.508
His second half last year was just awful. I can’t decide if I’m interested in Dye playing here.
by FuturePants on Nov 6, 2009 10:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm definitely interested...
…depending, of course, on price. With Abreu getting 2yrs $19mil, could Dye be had at 2yrs $15mil?

Yeah, of course.
If he’s cheap, bring him in. It all depends on the price, but I don’t want anything flirting with an Abreu-type deal.
by FuturePants on Nov 6, 2009 11:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Abreu = Ibanez
Or the Abreu deal could be just like the Ibanez deal last season; way overpriced than had the Phillies waited to sign him later in the offseason.

So, FA DH options..
Vlad
Dye
Matsui
Thome
Branyan
Nick Johnson
Adam Laroche
Glaus
quite a few others…
And of course the standby Bradley trade talk.
Hmm. Hard to gauge the FA market right now but if most of these guys are 1 year contracts there are some ok options. Kind of a retread of what we’ve been doing lately though and that hasn’t worked too well.
the preceding post was a great success.

DH should help Johnson in this regard
and I’d rather have the younger player with an injury history than the older player.
We need to get away from the late 30-something player that nobody else wants.
Johnson could serve as insurance at 1B if Davis shits the bed again and fill the void until Smoak is ready.
One of this team’s biggest problems last year was how LH pitching dominated their LH hitters. Johnson gets on base v LHs something 42% of the time.

not the greatest of groups when you dive into it
Matsui is the best of the group, but will cost the most.
Thome, Johnson, and Glaus will all be hurt signing their contracts.
Laroche doesn’t like to play baseball until August.
Vlad is just not the same player he once was.
Branyan – No Thanks.

That group
is awful. Holliday and Bay are going to cash in big time from somebody wanting to avoid that steaming pile of dog poo. Those 2 can basically name their price and wait for an offer.

Sign me up for mike cameron
If he is out in brewcrewville and everyone is gonna step over and on eachother for bay and Holliday, I wouldn’t mind sliding under the radar and nabbing him to mentor Julio and play center. Let him take over the Byrd role.

I could ride that train. He also would fit pretty well in Hurdle’s “team effectiveness” approach.

If Borbon isn't going to play CF, he has little value to the Rangers
and if Cameron is going to “take over the Byrd role”, Borbon isn’t going to be playing CF in 2010. As for Cameron mentoring Borbon, why can’t Pettis do that?

I'm just hoping that
“situationally aware and have a more ‘team-oriented’ approach” is coach-speak for teaching patience at the plate and less swinging for the fence.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Isn't Dye going to wanna play in the field
instead of DH?
We’re really screwed until the ownership situation gets squared away and I’m having difficulty imagining any moves until that’s resolved.

About Hurdle
They are talking about him opting for more of a “team” approach. I’m wondering if that means more hit and runs, more bunting, more hitting behind runners and more making contact with RISP, or does that mean more working the count. I’m more interested in B than A.
In the article, they stated that its hard to turn free-swingers into more selective players, and that the easiest way to do this is to just acquire more selective hitters. But I would argue that the opposite should also be true, but doesn’t seem to be. Rudy J seemed to turn several more selective batters into free-swingers.
Salty, Kinsler, Cruz, and to a lesser extent Murphy and Hamilton all were more selective before they started playing under Rudy J. I guess the issue is that Rudy could make you a better hitter, but you’d lose some of your patience.
For some, however (like Chris Davis), who didn’t have much patience before, that’s a very bad thing.
In that respect, any change at hitting coach was going to help.

"Tools" get overrated to me, especially when they're "Raw"
give me somebody that can play baseball. Beltre just doesn’t have the pitch recognition and plate discipline that I would expect out of a legitimate prospect. If we could trade him in a deal, I’d be all for it. He’s still young, so somebody might want him.

This is Josey's theme song
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.
