Brewers trade for Carlos Gomez
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for Carlos Gomez.
This could impact the Rangers, since Gomez taking over in center for the Brewers means Mike Cameron likely won't return to Milwaukee. Cameron is a guy the Rangers could bring in on a one year deal, if they decide they don't want to go multiple years for Marlon Byrd, and they aren't ready for Julio Borbon to be in center just yet.

I hope they just give it to Borbon.
Make sure Cruz doesn’t get pushed out of playing time.
the preceding post was a great success.

Great deal for the Twins.
Gomez has potential but has put up some terrible offensive numbers. Also really like Hardy.

this paves the way for Alcides Escobar — their Elvis Andrus

But
the best they could get for Hardy is Gomez? Gomez fill a need for them but he is not good at hitting the ball. I would have tried to get a pitcher for Hardy but thats just me.

the Brewers could still pick up the option on Cameron
Gomez could be ideal as an NL player, late inning defensive guy, lay down the bunt, some speed etc.
I doubt Hardy was going to bring back a pitcher, but who knows what was on the table.

That would be really bad
Trade JJ Hardy for a late inning defensive replacement…..Gomez is the starting CF now for MIL

they didn't trade for that
but if he can’t hit, that’s what he’ll become. he hasn’t been able to hit yet

ok
But they are gonna give him every opportunity to turn it around. I wouldn’t expect them to give up on him for at least a couple years

i can see him maybe turning into
an andrus type. if he can pull up his OBP and hit a little better, then combined with his defensive wizardry, he’d make a fine player. not quite as valuable, since SS is a more premium position, but still a nice player.
of course by ‘see him maybe turning into’ i mean that it is at least feasible. He does have 1k major league at-bats and his performance did decline last year so whether he becomes that is certainly in doubt.

Weird
I’d think JJ Hardy would have brought more than that.
Is the trade market heating up a little more quickly than normal, or is that just me?
As for Cameron, I really liked him a couple years ago and I guess I wouldn’t be too upset if they ended up getting him, but I’m not sure he’s any kind of answer out there. If he is brought in I’d like to see him as a bench guy who’ll be there primarily if Borbon doesn’t start the season well and needs a fill-in. But the kid looked ready to me so I would hope that Cameron wasn’t the starting CF coming out of spring training.

I think its just that the WS ended so late in the year
The offseason has effectively been shortened. Thats why things seem to be happening so soon this year IMO

Ozzie loves Ramirez at SS. Thinks he could be there for 12-15 years.

not inspiring, but better than Byrd for the money I’d bet.

As far as pet cats go
Cameron isn’t a bad one.
I am noticing that everyone is appeding ‘if he’s cheap’ to their pet cats this offseason. Is that indicative of a cruddy FA talent pool, the economy, the broke-dick finances of the team, or all three?

Great trade for the Twins
I have to think that this is the beginning of the movement to get Mauer to not leave..

I don't understand why the Rangers would get a CF even without Byrd returning
Borbon is still thought of as a CF and they also have Hamilton around if Borbon isn’t ready at the beginning of the season. I just don’t see why we need to get somoene here on a 1 year deal and block a guy like Borbon for another season when he clearly doesn’t need more minor league playing time.

I seem to be the lone wolf here
but I like Gomez’s potential, and don’t think Hardy is all that great. Hardy’s defense isn’t what it once was — though he’s no slouch (UZR/150 of the 16.7, 8.5, and 8.8 the last three years) — and his offensive approach is Ranger-esque. Gomez has a ton of talent, and his balls only just dropped a few years ago. He may be a Ruben Mateo-type — tons of talent, but never puts it all together (in Mateo’s case it was due to injury, but I’m too lazy to think of a better analogy). On a pure talent/tools level, give me Gomez.
That being said, Melvin could have gotten a lot more for Hardy.

Gomez
He doesn’t walk, and he doesn’t have any power, and never hit above .287 even in the freaking minors. He’s pretty damn good in CF, which gives him some value, but offensively he makes Juan Pierre look like Babe Ruth. If he had enough PA’s to qualify, he would’ve had the second-lowest wOBA in baseball and been the 8th least valuable offensive player this season.
Basically he’s what Yuniesky Betancourt would be if Yuniesky Betancourt played really good CF defense. Terrible player to have in a league where you’re already conceding one spot in the lineup to a guy that can’t hit.

He's not quite Juan Pierre bad
But there was a time when Pierre was a hot commodity. He does need to cut down on strike outs, but I’ll take his 50-plus steal potential and great defense.

one note on Hardy that I forgot about
Milwaukee sent him down to AAA for 20 days late in the season, which delayed his free agency eligibility by a year. He was expected to hit the market at the end of the 2010 season, but because of that move, he’s now under club control for the next two seasons instead of just one.
That was a very sharp way to increase his trade value, but it seems that Melvin wasted that extra value.
