Mitch Hedberg
one of my all-time favorite comedians.

There were/are a couple of those 90’s-00’s guys that I just have never understood.

Favorite standups
Norm, Gilbert, and Dennis Miller.
by brettgardner on Nov 6, 2009 3:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
All great...
I’m still super impressed by Gilbert’s take on the Aristocrats after his bomb of a 9/11 joke at one of the Comedy Central roasts. Greatest comeback in comedy history.

Old Dennis Miller was funny
Then he just gave up making new jokes and only uses old ones and does it half assed. However, surprisingly, before Howie Mandel started hosting shows again, he was hilarious in his standup. One of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen.

Yah
I found this unfunny.
I’ll admit to hating the incursion of “sorry” into events over which one has no control, ie, “sorry I can’t make it.”
Well, if you can’t make it you don’t need to be sorry.
OK, carry on.

Is English not his first language?
The material is OK, the delivery all piled on top of itself, and some of the words so nasal it’s hard to understand.

He had stage fright.
He’s nervous, that’s why his delivery is like that.
by TheCrow471 on Nov 6, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
his delivery in this video isnt his best
he had tendencies to get nervous, which might have led to all the drug use which lead to his death

Hedberg had actually been clean..
for over a year when he died.
by downsetgo on Nov 6, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He didn't die from drug use.
He was born with a heart defect that ultimately killed him.

i woulda sworn he od'd
odd that i didnt remember that.
on the topic, one of his funniest bits is the fedex guy being a drug dealer and he doesnt even know it

actually seems i was right
“Hedberg was born with a heart defect for which he received extensive treatment as a child.111 It was initially speculated that this condition may have played a part in his death. The New Jersey medical examiner’s office reported “multiple drug toxicity”, in the form of a cocaine and heroin “speedball”, as the official cause of death"

Yeah, I saw him in Madison a couple of months before he died
and he definitely was not clean. It was just sad. You could almost hear the other couple hundred people in the room thinking “I should ask for my money back … No, this guy has trouble enough.”

I smiled a couple of times
but never really laughed out loud. Now Gregg Giraldo, that guy is funny. IMO, the funniest man alive.

You see, this is a mistake
I don’t have to roll on the floor holding my sides to appreciate a comedian. It’s great when I do, but I appreciate the guys that just make me chuckle a bit, too.

+1
I tend to measure comedians not by how often I laugh really hard, but how often I can go “man, that was really an awesomely clever joke”.

there's no build up with that guy
there’s no thematic thread that holds his set together. It’s just random thoughts thrown together with no segway or structure. His delivery is awkward and none of his jokes build on top of one another. I guess I don’t like his style. If you do, more power to you. I need more out of a comic. At the very least, I need to be able to steal something that I can incorporate into a conversation and claim as my own.

easily my favorite stand-up of all-time.

He seems like a Stephen Wright Redux
Seemingly uncomfortable on stage with one line jokes that are really funny.
One of my favorite lines by Wright
“I put instant coffee in the microwave, and almost went back in time.”

Wright's delivery
was one of the reasons he was funny with that deadpan delivery.

I've seen...
some great comedians at the Punchline in S.F. and Sacramento. Unfortunately I never got to see Hedberg live. As SteveP said, that wasn’t his best stuff, but Mitch was very funny.
Damn do I miss being able to see quality stand-up live and in person.

I saw him live once
Didn’t really know who he was, and we went and saw Dave Attell and Lewis Black…Hedberg was the opening act, and he was the best one.

I like Hedberg...
but there’s no way he’s better than Attell imo. Very different comedians though. Attell is filthy, and amazing in person. Probably my favorite stand-up out there right now.
Of course, we all have different tastes.

Yeah
That’s kind of like saying you watched Rock and Roll Circus and thought Marianne Faithfull was the best act.

My brother would say that
he always likes the acts with the mousy female singer.

On that night...
…he was better than Attell. I saw Attell at the Laff Stop, and he was better there. I think the couple of hundred size venue is a better fit for him than the 2000 person venue.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 6, 2009 10:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You're right...
The Punchline’s and Cobbs (a club by the pier in SF) that I’ve seen him in are smaller clubs. 200 – 300 max and Attell is much better in a venue like that. He likes to interact with the crowd a lot and no two shows are the same.
He will even go and sit at the bar and talk to people after the show. A buddy of mine did that once with him. Then they went and smoked and they hung out after the show. Said he was a pretty cool guy, but a damn alcoholic. He couldn’t believe how much liquor the guy was pounding down.
What was crazy to me was how many comedians would come to see his shows. We would see 3 or 4 guys just standing in the back not performing that night, just watching Dave. Anyway, I digress.

I like that style
but think Stephen Wright does it better. Wright can make diet Coke come out my nose even when I’m not drinking one.

What an annoying comedian.
Awful presence, poor delivery and weak material.
