Scheppers has the qualities of a guy who can pitch at the top of the rotation, but some talent evaluators think he could be a closer in the big leagues next season if the team wanted to pursue that route.

Tanner Scheppers is ours
Justin Smoak is ours
Neftali Feliz is ours
Derek Holland is ours
Elvis Andrus is ours
Martin Perez is ours
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
He's almost become a forgotten man of late, with all the Scheppers drooling

Whoever has forgotten about Martin Perez needs to turn in their Ranger fan card

I'm going to conduct an experiment.
I see about 3-5 people or so in Rangers gear a day in the parks. I’m going to ask how many of them know who Martin Perez is.
can we place bets on this?

I'm just slightly stunned he sees 3-5 people a day in Rangers gear
I think literally the only place I’ve seen another person in Rangers gear is an Atlanta airport.

The first time I worked here in 2006, I saw no Rangers stuff. Litterally, I think I saw one family.
Over the summer, I saw them constantly, just about as often as any team but the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox (and maybe Phillies).
Now I see Cowboys stuff all the time (duh), and I’m guessing a few of them are people who would have worn Rangers stuff, but I still see a few Rangers people a day. Much more than I use to.
Martin Perez will never become the forgotten man!!

yep
but he has to prove he can pitch in a league that isn’t instructional, and a full season at that.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think moreso that he has to prove
his body doesn’t reject the idea of pitching in a full-season league.

closer
The theory there is that if Scheppers is indeed still at risk for shoulder problems, you don’t want to waste the bullets in the minor leagues.
Do you fill it via FA or internally with someone like Scheppers? Fortunately that questioned doesn’t have to be answer for a year or two.
|Space for Rent|
I'd always rather fill the closer/relief ace role internally if it's possible
It’s a lot cheaper than going out and paying for a big-name reliever, especially if it’s someone as volatile as Brad Lidge.

I think Brad Lidge more than paid for himself last year
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Lidge is in the first year of a 3 year, 11.5 mil per contact this year
According to Fangrapghs he was worth about 3.7 mil over what he was paid in 2008, but he just gave that all back and then some by being worth 8.2 mil less than his salary this year.
So no, Brad Lidge did not pay for himself last year.

He was an integral piece to their WS last year..no?
I don’t give a damn what his WAR or FAR or RAR or CAR says he was worth he paid for himself since winning a WS is the ultimate goal
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
and he was perfect in the playoffs
until that 1 WS game.
that paid for itself as well. he was integral in getting them to the WS this year.

Sigh.

Hey
That fangraph crap can be good when you are talking about the mediocre teams to figure out who pulled their weight. Or even a guy like GMJ who has a big contract on a good team who sucked. But there is no way I am believing that the closer who was damn good last year and pretty good this year especially in the playoffs when it mattered wasn’t worth his contract when you get to the WS two years in a row.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Wait
But there is no way I am believing that the closer who was damn good last year and pretty good this year especially in the playoffs when it mattered
We’re talking about Lidge?
The guy with the 7.21 ERA and 5.45 FIP, who inspired at least one article at BP about whether he had the worst single season for a closer in the modern era?
In the playoffs, he had a 5.40 ERA, struck out 5, walked 3, and hit a batter in 5 innings.
Lidge was awful this season.

I knew he was off this year
I hadn’t looked at it close enough to know it was that bad.
Im still not gonna say he wasn’t worth his money because this is a sport that you get paid based upon previous accomplishments more than future ones.

Now I know why Cahill calls it BigSteve Math™.
I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that being very good during one world series run excuses being worth 8.2 less than you where paid the very next season. That’s dumb.
Lidge is grossly overpaid and a classic example of why spending big on relief pitchers or paying them for a single monster season isn’t really a good idea.

He was good for the entire season last year which to me at least
means this years down year evens out. If he goes and has another bad season next year then sure I will say hes overpaid but not right now.

Scheppers as closer?
What kind of trade value would FX2 have?
I really want to see JD land a stud via trade, but that ain’t happening without giving up something of value, and maybe Frankie would be a guy with a lot of value that wouldn’t kill us to lose.
Favorite bumper sticker of all time, seen on a VW bus:
"Gas, Grass, or Ass. Nobody rides for free"
He's a year away from free agency
If you are competing this year, you probably don’t trade FX2. You need power arms in the bullpen…Scheppers and Wilson set up Frankie, with O’Day and a LOOGY around, and you’re in decent shape.

If JD wants to trade for an impact guy, who is the trade bait?
I don’t think he can improve the team much by trying to fill the holes on the roster with bargain bin FAs and minor trades, can he?

Trade Bait
Derek Holland and Frankie are probably our two biggest logical trade pieces this upcoming year
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't see why Frankie would be
He’s a year away from free agency and coming off a season where he was on the d.l. 3 times, meaning his trade value is probably not all that huge.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 6, 2009 8:18 PM CST up reply actions
I was more thinking if we fall out of the race
Frankie could be a nice addition to a playoff team or a possible playoff team and could bring back a nice prospect or young player. And since we have or will have someone who could slide into his role right away it would be easier to trade him IMO
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Only when posed a question about who our trade chips may be
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
The question was about
“who you trade to get an impact player” (something that can be done in the offseason), and not “what veterans do you trade if/when we’re out of the race”
Frankie could get us an impact player
Either now or midseason. If we traded him now we have CJ or Feliz we could plug into the closers role and feel pretty good about it.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I wouldn't feel good...
about Feliz being in the closers role.
And the only way you can put BGL there is if the Rangers can get another quality LH arm for the ’pen.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Feliz should start
all the talk in past years about wanting an ace, and now people want to turn Feliz, the best prospect with ace potential, into a bullpen arm.
You don’t trade FX2. Pitching and defense are crucial and trading one of your best bullpen pieces is not a good idea. Even if you get good value, it’s merely a trade-off and you gain nothing.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
A team willing to trade an impact guy...
…isn’t likely to be wanting a one-year rental like Frankie in return. They are probably going to be a team in rebuilding mode, and thus wanting prospects and young major leaguers.

OT : Hey Frog and College Football fans...
you might want to turn it to ESPN 2 and watch Boise St. v. LA Tech. Boise was up 20 at the half, but LA Tech has come storming back and just scored again.
30 – 28 at the start of the 4th quarter. Go LA Tech.
MWC >>>> WAC.

If anything
at least its showing how overrated Boise is. Even if they do win this, I think they will lose at Nevada.

"Hey you know who would have gotten those 3 outs in the 9th?

Missed field goal by Boise...
LA Tech gets the ball back.

Boise State beat Oregon
which is Oregon’s only loss. that’s pretty legit. i don’t care when you beat them.
ncaa needs a playoff system, so the midmajors can show what they are made of.
one more thing, the NCAA sucks — Dez Bryant should have been allowed to play this season. It’s freakin’ ridiculous how the punishments around college football don’t fit the crime.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Boise beat Oregon but ...
I believe that was the highpoint of the season for Boise. Since they they have been struggling. Since that night Oregon has played like a top ten team. Boise has played like a top 20 team.
.
I dunno why, but this is at the end of the first page on a "Tanner Scheppers" google image search

You know, that was a really butt-horrible movie.
