Twins exercise 2011 option on Michael Cuddyer
The Minnesota Twins exercised their $10.5 million option on Michael Cuddyer for the 2011 season. They apparently think the market will have rebounded by next offseason.

Wow, that doesn't really make any sense to me

They had to exercise it by 5 days after the WS or buy it out

How much was the buyout?
I’d be willing to bet that Cuddyer isn’t worth that much in 2011, especially not for a team like the Twins

Neyer Article
I think Neyer has a better take on this whole situation (and it is a free article). Essentially, the Twins have been a club who overspend on mediocre talent, and then complain when they can’t afford their superstar players. With Morneau and Mauer getting closer to free agency, this move could really impact the team.

can't find the article
But the Twins are expected to increase their payroll to ~$90M for 2010, thier first in the new stadium. Expect them to make a big effort to resign Mauer.

Article
The article is linked with “Neyer” in the above post.
Wouldn’t it make sense to attempt to sign both Morneau and Mauer? Even if the Twins had declined the 2011 option for Cuddyer, there is no way to say for sure that they could sign both. However, keeping Cuddyer around will make it almost impossible for the Twins to sign both players. The point is, the Twins claim that their inability to keep superstar players longterm is systemic, but it has more to do with how they allocate their resources.

I like the move for them.
What’s Cuddyer’s market value – 2-3 million less than the option maybe? Considering it’s effectively a 1-yr contract, there was a 1 million option (so this is a 9.5 million net decision), and it probably encourages Mauer to sign this offseason (whereas declining may have sent negative message), I don’t have a problem with it.

Kurkjian note
The Cubs won’t be able to trade Milton Bradley without picking up most of the two years, $20MM left on his contact.

I don't think its that bad
I don’t think they’re getting much of a bargain, but he’s a solid player that the Twins need. I think that the market also has a good shot of rebounding a bit by next offseason which would make this deal stick out less.

To me it seems like a move to show
Mauer they are going to spend to keep a team around him. Though I could be easily over thinking it.
What do voluntary mean?

Not a bad move IMO
The potential FA OFs after next season are not an impressive group. Consistent .275/.345/.450 production is pretty nice. Maybe a little overpaying but given the constraints of having to make the decision now I think its a good move

LOL
.275/.340/.450 production is pretty nice but .280/.370/.450, well that’s nothing special at all.

huh
I never said it wasn’t nice. I said it wasn’t the type of production that would affect this teams offense the way some of yall think it will. I don’t mind having Bradley here next year but to expect us simply insert Bradley and this team bounce back to 2008 levels is unrealistic.

To put it another way
If we could trade for Cuddyer do you think he would fix this offense?
