Sunday morning Rangers things
Largely a quiet day out there today, as far as Rangers stuff goes...
Evan Grant has a story up about Michael Young being among the active leaders in career games without making the playoffs, and Young's reaction to former teammates Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez winning it all this year.

yeah
Teixeira and Arod got their ring. But they had to sell their soul to get it.

I love how MYoung
continues to hold this organization accountable and not be satisfied with an 87 win season.

Teixeira vs Young
The only difference between Mark Teixeira and Michael Young when it comes to “selling their soul” is who they signed their big contracts with. Both were smart enough to realize where they could maximize their value. Young’s maximum value just happened to be here. Teixeira knew his would be someplace else. I don’t have a problem with either one. More power to them.

Exactly.
Hadn’t seen Lucas’ comparisons before, but I sometimes find myself thinking about players along these lines while I’m watching games. Thanks for the link.

Young understands the prudence of developing a homegrown core. It’s just that he’s already been through it (see 2003-2007), and it produced nothing meaningful.
We have a full stream of players that will hopefully impact the big league club in a positive way for a long time. That is something different than we’ve ever had, but I do agree with Young that we have a big opportunity this year. One player, Adam Dunn, I would love to get via trade is #5 on the list of active players without going to the playoffs. Wouldn’t it be nice for them both to go with the Rangers this year

I know we had a few good players in those 03 days, but wtf.
It was top heavy, defensively poor, and not with the long-term depth we have now. There was hope, but comparing it to the home-grown development we have now is ludicrous. Not to mention we don’t currently have any contracts as bad as Ho and we’re not paying millions of dollars to the best player in the league to play for another team.

Olney: A handful of teams are said to be ready and willing to pay the price to land an ace.
2. The Texas Rangers: They were one of the teams most aggressively pursuing Halladay at the trade deadline, and if they could land one of the big three available aces — Halladay, Vazquez or Lackey — they could have a formidable pitching staff next season if Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz (13 hits allowed in 31 innings with 39 strikeouts) continue to develop as expected.
Lackey would fit for many reasons — he grew up and played college ball in Texas; he’s had success in the AL West Division — but what is unknown is whether the Rangers have any chance to be in position to make an aggressive multi-year offer for the right-hander, given how their ownership is in a state of flux. The timing might just not be right.
Rather, the Rangers might be more inclined to make a deal for a one-year fix like a Halladay or a Vazquez, and there are already rumblings that the Braves and Rangers have discussed Vazquez. What would the Rangers have to surrender?
First baseman Chris Davis is a possible fit, but he’s coming off a poor season and probably wouldn’t be enough for Atlanta. Talent evaluators with other teams wonder about whether Josh Hamilton is in the Rangers’ long-term plans. “Who knows what to expect?” asked one scout. “He’s had one great season and he was hurt most of last season, and when he did play, he wasn’t that great.” Hamilton had an OPS of .741 in 89 games for the Rangers in 2009.
What about Nelson Cruz, who emerged at age 29 to have a solid season of 33 homers and a .856 OPS? For the Braves, he would be relatively cheap, he could have some impact hitting fifth or sixth in the Atlanta lineup and he has the potential for high impact. There would be questions for the Braves about Cruz’s home-road splits (his OPS at home last season was 153 points higher in Texas than on the road, but there might be some common ground for the Braves and Rangers here.

Even though Vazquez is good
There is no way in hell I’d trade him for Cruz.

Just say no
to anything that sees the Rangers trading important offensive talent for pitching help.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Before last season, yes
But I think its silly given what we’ve seen this team do this past season that people are still talking about selling off top offensive talent to get a quality pitcher here. The team’s biggest question mark now is their offense. The pitching/defense is good enough to get this teams into the playoffs if the offense does their part. After this team makes the playoffs, then they can start looking at the potential need for a TORP.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Not really, no.
He had FIPs of 3.86, 3.80 and 3.74. Not nearly as good as he was this year (in part, probably, because of being in a different league), but right in line with his career, which doesn’t vary much from year to year. He had tRAs of 4.21, 3.93 and 4.04. pRAAs of 35.8, 34.3 and 32.6.
He has a knack for melting down all at once, so he’s probably not quite as good as that, but he still didn’t exactly struggle. His defense did him no favors.

Yep
He’s a very good pitcher, and I’d love to see him come here, but I dunno if I wanna be dealing for him when his value’s at an all-time high.

Cruz for Vazquez
makes so much sense from an “I could see this team doing that” perspective. It just fits how this team and their treatment of Cruz this year.
Personally, I don’t think I’d be satisfied with that deal, per se – I’d want something else prospecty to come back as well. But, Cruz for Vazquez could very well constitute “selling high” on Cruz, and Vazquez would return decent prospects at the deadline if the Rangers aren’t in it.

I tell you Wash benches Cruz so much we don’t get nearly the value we could from him, you do the trade?

Fuck. That.
Vazquez is great and all, but he’s in the last year of his deal and he’ll be 34 next year. I’d like to at least trade Cruz for a guy we can control for a while.

Vazquez
Why would the Rangers even be talking to the White Sox about him? He still has a no-trade clause to all the AL & NL West teams. Unless he’s willing to waive that, I don’t see this happening.

Of all the stuff that irritated me at the trade deadline
JD saying something like he didn’t talk to the indians was at the top of it. Whether or not he made a trade, he should have been at least negotiating. That was the team that had what we needed, and ended up trading the pieces for relatively reasonable prices, especially compared to the Blue Jays.

Halladay would be my preference of the 3
but I’d be in favor of trading for Nolasco. he would cost less than all 3 of these guys.

I think I would be infuriated if Vazquez was a Ranger.
The logical side of my brain knows we’d be better with him. The emotional side of my brain could not take his propensity for unevenly distributed runs allowed.
by philkid3 on Nov 8, 2009 3:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not a fan of any of those scenarios
Out of all of those I’d pick Lackey, because we wouldn’t have to give up any players to get him. I don’t want to lose anything important on offense to get a 1 year pitcher, that seems very counter-productive. Maybe for a guy like Nolasco, Greinke, or Cain. If we’re going to go after a big name starter, I’d rather pick one up in free-agency or trade for a young stud that’s still under control for a little while.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.

OT: I conducted that un-scientific poll I said I would today.
I saw four people (in separate groups) in Rangers gear. Two of them wearing A-Rod jerseys.
None, zero, knew who Martin Perez was. Two at least knew who Smoak was, and think he’s our top prospect. Another said Derek Holland was our top prospect. He also said, and I quote, “MARTIN Perez? You mean ‘Nef-tuh-ly?’” That was one of the A-Rod jerseys.

Part of the problem
is that Holland and Feliz broke out in 08 so all eyes were on them in 09 when they were near ready. Perez was a top talent, but he was expected to be at least 2 full years away from the Majors. There’s going to be a lot more hype for him entering next season when its him and Scheppers dominating in Frisco.

Oh no way.
Before I got a Baseball Prospectus subscription (which I did right before the Teixeira trade), the only prospects whose names I’d even known were Ruben Mateo, Chris Magruder (because he became awesome in one of my old baseball games), Mark Teixeira (first prospect I ever actually followed from early minors to MLB debut) and the DVD trio because other people actually talked about them on baseball boards.
It’s not that I didn’t love the Rangers, it’s that following prospects takes some work and research, more than simply liking to watch your Major League team play and win.
