Scheppers and Gutierrez - AFL Rising Stars Game
The hitters Gutierrez faced did not have a chance on his curveball. Gutierrez has great stuff, and he has a real shot to impact our bullpen this year as well as Scheppers. I'd prefer he get more time in AA and AAA, but if he performs really well I don't see why you wouldn't give him a look in September.
Scheppers threw 1 83 mph breaking ball and an 89 mph changeup. The rest were all fastballs ranging from 96 - 99. We need a great nickname for this guy. Enjoy!

the bobbing Scheppers does between pitches is kinda funny
whatever works.
I didn’t have time to edit it down, so here are the full 1/2 innings from each pitcher.

97 at the knees...
is a really cool phrase. I like hearing an announcer say that one over and over again.

Is there a way I can download the videos?
I’d like to get some stills of both pitchers for analysis.

Nevermind.
I downloaded the FLV files. Now I just need a way to play them back without re-embedding them somewhere.

Try this
Awesome little site. I mostly use it when I want to DL something off youtube, but you can also upload your own files. And since youtube vids are FLV files, I imagine it’ll work pretty much the same way if you upload a FLV from your computer. There is a 100 MB limit though, unless you subscribe (not sure how big these vids are).
It should convert the file into whatever format you tell it to, and email you a link where you can DL it, usually instantly or within a few minutes. As far as I know it’s safe – I’ve never had a problem with it, and I’ve been using it quite a bit lately.

I'm beginning to think Gutierrez should be considered a closer prospect rather than SP.
He’s already got two really good pitches, and I get the feeling from reading what has been posted on royals review and elsewhere that he’s not exactly a go-getter, self-improvement type. For example, here is a comment from Jason Cole’s interview with Danny Clark:
Cole: How much of a focus with Gutierrez is his changeup right now, as he tries to get that third solid pitch?
Clark: I just talked to him today about making him throw his changeup more in the Fall League to obviously get him to get a feel for it. He’s had such good command on both sides of the plate, his response is, ‘Well, I don’t need it.’ And I’m like, ‘You might not need it now, but you’re going to need it later.’ That’s the big issue—making him throw his changeup at least five to six times to get him to get the feel for it.
So, let him get after it for one-inning stings with the two pitches he already has. With any luck, Gutierrez could replace frankfranKKKKK when he’s ready for free agency.

His fastball is too straight, imo, to be a big K guy
but that Googly is wicked. With a third pitch, he could be a good #3. Well, that or get some action to his FB.

Yeah. I didn't like the lack of movement on his fastball either.
If he locates it well, though, he should be pretty darn good as a closer just with 94-96 and that nice curve.

Are you talking about vertical movement?
Because Gutierrez has really nice left-to-right movement on his four-seamer.
Scheppers, on the other hand, doesn’t have much movement on his fastball. When he throws the ball knee-high, the ball has a nice downward angle because he releases it so high. But when he gets the ball up in the zone, it comes in real straight.

Video angle is deceiving, I guess, or he didn't have much movement in this outing.

What is the movement like on Trevor Hoffman's fastball?
I know it’s not exactly a fireball. When you’ve got a devastating pitch like Hoffman has with the change, and like Gutierrez may have with the curve, you don’t really need a dominant fastball to succeed as a closer.

Maybe...
the Rangers’ player development people need to get Gutierrez in touch with Mr. Santos and Juan Dominguez so that he can talk to them about what happens to douchers in baseball.

Gutierrez
His curveball was so nasty in that game. I don’t know how to overstate how cool it is that they added two pretty advanced guys with this kind of stuff.

What does Gutierrez slot with our pitching prospects?

I have him in the back side of the top ten prospects in the system.

I have him as our #6 SP in the book, #9 prospect overall.

Feliz, Perez, Scheppers
Who else is ahead of him or should I just buy the book? :)

I would assume Kiker and Main
i haven’t ordered the book yet, but I plan on doing it soon.

Not Kiker, not Feliz (have him with the relievers).

really, Feliz with the relievers?
IMO he should start, but you see him as a reliever

It was sorta cheating.
Allowed me to feature both Feliz and Perez as tops at their position, getting another player photo of each in the book.

are the only ones for whom I can see much of an argument of ranking ahead of him. I would not have Kiker or Beavan ahead of him for sure.

thats a pretty legit comparison
maybe a little bit less than Javy just b/c he’s not quite the K machine Vasquez is.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

Why not just "Schepp"
Like, “Hey look, it’s good ol’ Schepp”
And some guy with a dreamy, yet notty wig looked at you, then threw a 99 mph fastball at the knees and on the black.
Good ol’ Schepp.
