Vote for the best nickname in the minor league system
Wilmer “Wingding” Font!
Seriously, I’m going to be quite agape if Font winds up behind all three of Main, Ross AND Gutierrez.
I failed my LSB ethics test.

But I think it’ll take a few more til he shows.

Cool, y'all started this without me.
Felt bad I pulled a disappearing act left y’all a bit high and/or dry. Glad someone picked up the ball. Although not too glad… Things appear to be going to shit without the smooth guiding hand of the ’Tron.
I mean, I guess I could see Main before Font, but Ross? That kinda makes my penis hurt pretty bad. I’ve got 13-14.5 inches of throbbing, veiny prospectacatorial agony in my baseball pants right now.
I guess running a CPP without the ‘Tron is kind of like punting a baby without a bridge… sure, it still technically works, but somehow it just isn’t right.

Welcome back, Dirkatron
I’m a huge fan of Kinslerhomer (if you’re not already, you should follow his Twitter page to stay abreast of what’s happening with the Rangers), but the CPP has definitely suffered without your occasional pop-ins and pop-offs. Hopefully, you can keep us on track for another 25 rounds or so.
Heh

This is why we love you.

I'm with you on Font v. Ross.
Font held his own a step above Ross while being a year younger than Ross. Font likely would’ve put up some very impressive numbers in the NWL.
BTW, everyone does a MLE on minor league numbers. In this case, I’d like to see a NWL equivalent on Font’s numbers. Kind of an odd analytical wish.

yep, kind of blows me away really
but whatever
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
Hay man, if you want to take over just say so
I’d be glad if you wanted to run it again. This thing needs more funny, which isn’t me :( :)

Went with Font, btw.
He’s raw and there’s tons of risk with him, but the potential is nigh off the charts.
My votes so far if I’d been around would’ve been…
Feliz, M-Per, Smoak, Scheppers, Font, Font, Font.

I'll see your Font and raise you a Gutierrez
Gutierrez has a plus curveball, an above average fastball, and a change-up with excellent velocity and movement (link). Font has the plus fastball and a change-up that has apparently developed into a solid pitch (link), though if memory serves, Dirkatron, you mentioned that he was tipping the pitch pretty badly late in the season.
Font obviously has the benefit of time (19 years old vs 22 years old for Gutierrez), but I prefer Gutierrez for his superior groundball rates (career 1.29 and 1.23 in 2009 vs Font’s 0.75 career rate and 0.73 in 2009) and his superior control (2.9 BB/9 career and 1.9 BB/9 in 2009 vs Font’s 4.8 BB/9 career and 4.9 BB/9 in 2009).
I agree Gutierrez is better developed than Font, but I think G's career is stunted by his brain.

yea, Id probably put DGutz, Ross and Font all ahead of Main at this point
with DGutz sliding into that fifth spot

I'm willing to believe that G's career will be stunted by his lack of a brain.
Font for me, since he’s #5 on my personal list.

Danny Guts for me
I normally go with ceiling over proximity and likelihood but I’m throwing that in reverse. Though I’m ready to get all these pitchers out of the way so I can start stumping for Jurickson, sweet Jurickson.

This CPP is reminding me just how good this system really is
Font and Gutierrez are going to be the 7th and 8th guys in our rankings and they’re both some top prospects who can easily raise their stock a bunch this season. These are guys that could sneak into that top tier with guys like Scheppers, Feliz, and Perez.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Gutierrez third time now
Looks like it will have to be 4. Can’t really argue with Font above him.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'll go Gutierrez next
then 1 of Kiker/Moreland — probably Kiker then Moreland.
it proceeds to get a little murkier
possibly Boscan, Poveda, Jurick etc

Yeah
I think my next 5 after this will be
Gutierrez/Font (whichever doesn’t win)
Kiker
Moreland
Profar
Poveda

Please, please, please go with Moreland over Kiker.
Then you can also go with Kirkman, Beavan, and like 10 others before Kiker.

That's what I was thinking.
I really don’t want to see Kiker in the top 12.

I'm not a big Kiker fan
But It’s hard to argue with his K rates. He should at least be a quality relief arm for a long time, and he’s a far surer bet to contribute than a guy like Kirkman.
Walks and HBP's are bad for relievers, too.

It's odd
because before this year, reports are that he could at least command his fastball. I don’t know, I’d take Kiker after Moreland, but probably at the end of the top 12.

but whats your reason for going Moreland here?
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
He's the best hitter in the system not named Smoak.
He has the power, the patience, and the contact rate to be a successful Major Leaguer. He doesn’t have a superstar ceiling, but he’s definitely going to contribute for someone.

Good Reasons
I agree with a lot of that, it’s the lack of high ceiling that brings him down some to me. But I think he’s certainly a guy who can contribute at the major league level and play 1b/cof and dh
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
The thing is...
I don’t think you can look at a lot of the pitchers in this area of the list and say the same thing about them. Is Danny Gutierrez or Robbie Ross or Kasey Kiker or Omar Poveda “definitely going to contribute for someone”?
by NoNameOnCard on Dec 11, 2009 2:29 PM CST up reply actions
I think all those you listed except Ross
Are close to definite
Ross is so far away you can’t really tell but the other three being as close as they are are almost locks to contribute to someone within the next 18 months

DGut, Font, Moreland, Telis, Gomez, Profar, Kiker
Is how I’m leaning right now.
I am not a believer in Kiker at all.
Glad to see the rest of you have joint the Font bandwagon
So far:
- Navidad
- The P’rez
- Smoke
- Mirrors
- Main

So do I start a new poll? or is Dirk going to do it?
"I was going to say, 'You’re gay for Elvis.' But then I realized that I, too, am gay for Elvis." ~Adam J. Morris.
I think we need to sign Dirk
to a one year contract with an option since we’re not sure what we’re going to get out of him. He has the kind of upside that puts fear into the hearts of babies everywhere, but our depth here may need to step in and do some punting for now.
