Rangers get LHP Benjamin Snyder in Rule 5 Draft
The Baltimore Orioles, with the third pick in the Rule 5 Draft, have selected San Francisco Giant LHP Benjamin Snyder.
This pick is supposedly going to the Rangers as part of the Kevin Millwood trade, so the Rangers should thus end up with Snyder.
You can see Snyder's minor league numbers here. He's 24 years old, a former 4th round pick in the 2006 draft, and pitched mostly in relief for the Giants' AA affiliate last year. Supposedly a finesse pitcher, and presumably will battle Clay Rapada and an NRI or two for the Rangers' LOOGY role.

from BA's Prospect Handbook in 2008
where Snyder was ranked #21 in the Giants system:
Snyder…is a true starting pitching prospect with a fastball, curve, changeup and slider. He can hit 90 mph but usually pitches in the upper 80s and isn’t afraid to throw inside to lefthanders, whom he limited to a .180 average last season. One Giants coach said Snyder is ahead of where Noah Lowry was in his first pro season. Snyder’s changeup might not be as good as Lowry’s, but it has potential to be a plus pitch. He’s a strong athlete who fields his position well. Because he repeats his delivery well and throws strikes, Snyder could move through the system quickly.

nothing G
There are Triple-A and Double-A segments of the Rule 5 draft, with price tags of $12,000 and $4,000 respectively. Minor league players not protected on the reserve lists at the Double-A and Class A levels are subject to selection, but almost no future big leaguers emerge from this process. It’s basically a tool for major league teams to fill out affiliates rather than obtain talent.

you can put him on your list. If we make another move. I would assume he would be the first to drop off the 40-man. Nobody would pick him up off waivers. Well, maybe the royals since they now have Betancourt, lol

No way on Hurley.
He can just be 60’d as soon as the season starts, right?
There’s enough upside in him that I can’t see them cutting him, especially since he’ll be easy to stash this year.

I think Hurley has about 0 chance of losing his 40 man spot.
Mathis is likely to make the 25 man roster out of spring training.

Hurley was always overrated
back when he and Danks were in the organization together the comparison between the two would come up and one of the key stats was that Danks would maybe start out rough and he would show the aptitude to adjust. Danks’ number would improve as the season went along. Hurley was the opposite. He may do well at the beginning and would progressively get worse. Hurley is overrated because he was our only decent prospect along with Danks. He is no more than a #4 at best.
