New Rangers discussion open thread

Okay, I've said all I can say about the moves that have been made, my brain is a little fried, and the morning thread is almost to 400 comments already.

So I'm going to open this up as a new "open thread" to discuss the Rangers, the offseason, the recent moves, and anything else along those lines, other than Hank Blalock and the number of infield hits Chris Davis thread.  If anyone wants to discuss those items, they need to make a FanPost about it.

UPDATE -- Also, Evan Grant offers 10 thoughts on the Winter Meetings.

toys for tots

was pretty cold last night at the BPiA for the Toys for Tots. Looks like they had a pretty good turnout and gathered up a lot of toys. The Marines were there, of course, and there was holiday music and free hot dogs and hot chocolate. The bad part was having to stand in line for ever to get to the players for the autographs. Kinsler was in the first group as was Rusty Greer and Mark MacLemore and the new hitting coach along with Eric Nadel also Jeff Russell. The third group was Chris Davis, Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland, Scott Feldman, Brandon McCarthy and Craig Gentry. In the second group I forget who was in that group other than Murphy The last group was mostly Legend players with the exception of Eric Hurley. In one of the groups LSB’s favorite radio announcer Dave Barnett. The wife and I did not stay for this group as we were cold and our backs and feet hurt. It is a good cause and the players should be thanked for turning out and helping the Toys for Tots campaign.

thanks we had fun but it was cold. The wife has been to a number of them but it was my first time. Last night after being cold and my back hurting and feet hurting, I was reconsidering whether I would go again. But now after sleep and aspirins, I will probably go again. There must have been a hundred or so little bicycles and that was very cool to see.

Unless 24-year-old LHP Ben Snyder, the second player acquired from Baltimore in the Kevin Millwood trade, is absolutely awful in spring training, expect him to be on the Opening Day roster.

I like Evan Grant's summary

Regarding the risk, I think he’s spot on. The Rangers added a lot of variability, but variability is bidirectional. With Lowell, Ray, and Harden (and Snyder), they add their considerable upside potential. But the key is, their organizational depth is so great, especially with pitching, that the downside risk hasn’t increased much, if any.

Say you get to roll some dice four times. Each roll can be any number from 1 to 6, a uniform distribution. The average they’ll add up to is 14 (3.5 × 4).

Now, say you get to roll a special die, where half the time you get a 6, the other half you get a 1. Well, the average outcome doesn’t change, it is still going to be 14 for four rolls. This die is Rich Harden (or a die with two 6’s, and four 1s, which is Mike Lowell).

But now you factor in the Rangers depth. Basically, this says that if the Harden die gives you a 1 (which means he’s injured), you get to roll one of your normal dice again. That greatly helps the team. The downside risk of the 6,6,6,1,1,1 die is mitigated.

You've played too much Dungeons and Dragons

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

I still don't understand why...

…the concept of a die is easier to understand than just giving the probabilities. I know stat profs like to do it, but what’s so intuitive about a senary (base-6) system and outside of craps and monopoly, who throws dice anymore? I’d argue that we’re much more familiar with percentages from an early age than probabilities of die casting.

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 10, 2009 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough

I agree probabilities are easier to understand in general, but when it comes to combining multiple probabilities with my little special case (the downside of Harden’s distribution gets replaced by, say, Feliz’s distribution), it is somewhat less intuitive how to combine continuous non-uniform (albeit more realistic) probabilities. For this case, discretizing is useful, and dice are a great way to discretize.

shit if I can remember...

I was already sick to start out drinking that night. don’t remember much…except that it was fun:

you are seated at a table, each person rolls dice, and if you hit double 3’s you are the one to keep drinking whenever somebody else rolls a 3. until somebody else rolls double 3’s, then it changes. doubles of anything and you get to deal out that amount of sips to anybody, mixing it up or all at once. I rolled doubles nearly every time I touched the die, and never double 3’s.

Isn't the single biggest question/mystery between now and opening day,

which one of CJ or Feliz will be the 5th starter? Let’s assume Harden, Feldman, Hunter and Holland. Let’s assume McCarthy is moved. Some of these moves scream CJ (the Snyder and Rapada pickups and our own Rule 5 protections) and some scream Feliz (Ray). I’ll admit that I don’t have a read one way or the other. Perhaps it’s all eye wash and McCarthy is the 5th starter, CJ stays in the pen all year and Feliz is the first one up when Harden or McCarthy gets hurt (thus keeping a ceiling on Feliz’s early innings).

Thoughts? Opinions?

Scheppers

If Scheppers is looking like he can duplicate Feliz’ ‘09 stint in the bigs as a late season bullpen gem then you gotta think they might go that route, which even helps keep his IP totals low. But if he isn’t just dominating I doubt he sees the bigs. All or nothing with him.

Between Hurley’s healthy and rustiness I think he’d be doing good to get called up to start in a mid-season double-header or something if the staff is overworked.

by Walter Sobchak on Dec 10, 2009 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

I'll give my best analysis

Beltre: probably the hardest to predict. Tools coming out of the wazoo but can he translate it to the baseball field. Where do the rangers send him this year. Was the late season cameo in Frisco just for roster depth or will that be where he goes. At his age if he puts up a mediocre season in Frisco I think you have to protect him as long as the tools are still present

Boscan: dropping on the list due to lack of strikeout pitch yet still seems to get guys out. Will start the season in Bakersfield and if he does well enough to get bumped to Frisco will plant his name firmly in the “tough decision” category

LDLS: Held his own last year in Hickory. Depending on where he goes to start the year will depend on how difficult a decision he is. if he goes to bakersfield and is still great defensively, with our catching situation, you would think we would have to protect. If hes held back in Hickory and only makes it to Bakersfield he probably wont.

MDLS: Make it stateside first but if he does he could rocket up the system and become an issue. A good issue to have. Very unlikely he would be protected.

Font: Can’t see us leaving him unprotected. That lost year really hurts though. It will be hard if he doesn’t make it to Frisco to give a 40 spot to a guy who has no time above A ball. But it will also be hard to leave him exposed and potentially watch Feliz part 2 get taken right from under our noses.

Grullon: Likely left exposed. Hes more a 2011 rule 5 watch guy

Gutierrez: Cant see him being exposed unless he beats up another person. Could make the ML pen this season which would make this a moot point.

Kiker: Same as Gutierrez except he has no history of beating women only beaning opposing hitters

Lemon: Profiles as ideal UTIL guy. Looks like we may need him as early as next year.

Moreland: if he keeps hitting theres no way to expose him IMO.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 10, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Beltre

I just don’t see him panning out. The Rangers won’t be able to carry someone on their roster next winter just because of his tools. If Beltre doesn’t spend half a year at Frsico, then he doesn’t get protected.

by RangerMad on Dec 10, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

That’s 8 guys right there just off the top of my head. Not sure who else could be a FA after 2010 (I’m sure I’m forgetting somebody) or any other players that could be dealt. The 40 will be crowded, but I could see room for nearly all the guys Large Steve listed above if needed.

I don't think it will be that bad

Some of those guys will be in-season replacements of crappier players. Those that aren’t can likely find a role to play in the 2011 team replacing any FAs/non-tenders/DFAs. I think between Beltre, The De Los Santos , Grullon, and Boscan, you’re not likely to get all of them develop enough this season to allow a team to risk taking them.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

But that means we would have a hole at third

An offensive one, if you will. The key is to maximize the ability of the lineup. Increase their chances to score runs. Traditionally, 3rd base is where you have a solid hitter, like Face. So you can’t just trade him away for a DH/OF platoon guy. It leaves a hole for the club and the Rangers are in no shape to fill that role for a while.

Problem is.

Is that the Club is in the phase where they got to stop looking to flip big league talent for high ceiling prospect guys. It’s also not wise to flip a big league talent for another. Michael is the best option at 3rd for the Rangers right now, and there is no immediate replacement in sight. So, for futures sake and the current state of the club, it’s best if he stays.

Adrian Beltre

If we were able to give up Young without eating the contract, I’d rather have Beltre.

Young will be in his 33 year. Beltre will be in his 31 year.
+Young’s 2009 offense was buoyed by his .354 BABIP which is .015 above his career average. Beltre had a down year offensively from his normal, though his BABIP was also above his normal by .009.
+Young has been ~3.1 WAR on average for the past 5 years. Beltre has been ~3.3 WAR on average for the past 5 years (this doesn’t include Beltre’s career year in 2004).
+Young has been horrid for on defense for the most part of his career, while Beltre has been very good in his career.
+Young will be paid $16 M/year. Beltre will likely be lucky to get $10 M/year.

Basically, I’d much rather have Beltre….

The Millwood-Ray-Harden series of moves was just fantastic manuevering by JD. He deserves mucho props for getting that done.

Max Ramirez for Lowell, on the other hand, is a bad move. I bet Max is more productive next season, and the 6 seasons following. Max can freaking hit, no doubt in my mind. Sucks to give him away for an old spare. I’m hoping that Lowell can contribute something, but I don’t know what one could reasonably expect that contribution to be.
