How many infield hits will Chris Davis have and are you going to miss Hank Blalock?
Chris Davis, though I've never clocked him, seems like a really slow dude. He also doesn't make much contact and hits the ball in the air a lot. So do you think he'll have any infield hits this coming season? I think that might be the most interesting part of 2010.
I remember back when I was sure Hank Blalock was going to be incredible. His +/- in 2004 was something like +18, he was an awesome hitter, and he was in his early 20s. I know he had a skill set that isn't always reliable, but still. Damn. Biggest disappointment of my life as a baseball fan.
Don't rec this.

I think Davis should start bunting every time he gets to 2 strike counts in an effort to increase his infield hits
Since they apparently padded his statistics so much this year.

when I think of what Hank could have been it makes me sad.
Damn did I think he would be great.

he would go to all fields, then his approach at the plate changed, much like Kinslers last year. Hopefully, Kinsler adjusts and changes his approach at the plate. I’m a little worried though that he might be the next disappointment. Here’s hoping otherwise.

Chris Davis's infield hits
I have to confess I zoned out after about 2 posts on the subject, but was that the dumbest Josey Wales-inspired argument that this blog has seen?
Not mediocre. Right about average
It was definitely in the pantheon of Josey's dumbassery
Unlike the alleged front office dumbassery, it didn’t stop on Feb 6, 2008.

Idiots are running around in here saying Chris Davis
is a completely different hitter than the historic shit-the-bed Davis we saw thru the end of the June which is total bullshit. Yes, he was making more contact but he was still a terrible hitter whose presence in the line-up helped kill our season (look where his hitting stats were on September 19).
I merely pointed out that his numbers upon return were not only propped up by 7 infield hits (and a joke of a scorekeeper’s call) but the really good streak he had after September 20 (once the Rangers were out of contention).

How much of Hank's awful batting average was propped up by infield hits, terrible fielding, and bad scorekeeper's decisions?

Look it up yourself, Aggie. Each and every Davis & Blalock ab became a monumentous
occasion last year and my recollection is that Hank F didn’t get a lot of help from infield hits, terrible fielding or scorekeeper decisions. Quite the opposite, really. He seemed to hit into a lot of bad luck.
The discussion about the infield hits from Davis was not to compare Davis to Blalock. The Great Hank F Blalock War of June 2009 was fought and won. When Hank F began playing every day beginning on July 1 the team went 28-19. After Davis returned the team ended up going 18-21 and were out of contention by mid September.
Those who were in bed with Davis lost their ass but now Hank F is gone and we have to see if CDavis can regain his 2008 form.
The Chris Davis we saw from August 25 thru September 19 wasn’t as bad as the historic shit-fest we saw in the first half of the season but he wasn’t very good either. His contact rate was better but his numbers were propped up quite a bit by the number of infield hits (and the incredibly bad scorekeeper’s decision in the Toronto game) he produced.
I just don’t see him as the type of player who can get 40 infield hits every year and that’s the pace he was on after he came back.
The only encouraging thing about the return of Davis was how well he hit after September 20 but that came when all the pressure was off in games that were reminiscent of late March spring training games.

Bad Luck my ass
He swung and missed his way into bad luck.
They both sucked last year, but you should expect a veteran player with the kind of talent that Blalock has to put up some numbers. Davis had youth as an excuse. Blalock had no reason to be that bad. He’s just developed into a terrible fucking hitter, and is getting worse all the time. Maybe he will do better with a change of scenery.
Anyway Davis did come back from the minors looking better. Did he look good? No. But better, yes, and you’re blind if you didn’t see that.
There’s really not even any room to discuss this. It is what it is. I don’t know how it keeps getting brought up, and it’s even more mysterious how you cling to your position.

I said Davis was better when he came
back but his numbers were propped up by a lot infield hits.
You need to let go of Hank F Blalock. You lost the war, let the healing begin.

Point is Davis made progress with his swing, infield hits or not. And I have definitely let go of Hank Blalock. I’ve been waiting a long, long time to see him gone. If you weren’t posting here the guy would never be mentioned at all.

From July 1 thru August 23
the Rangers went 28-19 with Hank Blalock playing 1B every day and then Chris Davis was called up. On that day the Rangers trailed the Red Sox by 1 game.
Beginning on August 25 Chris Davis started to play every day while Hank F was buried. The Rangers went 11-12 climaxed by a 5 game streak that saw them score one run and on September 18 the Rangers trailed the Red Sox by 7 games ending any hopes of post-season play.
Thank you Chris Davis for shitting the bed fantastic.
Let the healing begin.

yeah that .267 OBP in july and august was really carrying That Thing
im sure his veteranyness inspired the rest of the team to play better.
but, if that was the case, why are you so against the lowell trade? even if he sucks, he’s still a gritty vet who can make everyone else better
Hank F
had a .847 OPS in July and led the team in HR & RBI. One of the reasons the Rangers went 17-8 in July is because Chris Davis was no longer shitting the bed fantastic in The Show.
That war is over and Hank F is gone.
Let the healing begin.

Clocking Davis
I don’t know that he is particularly slow. Big guy, maybe slow out of the box, but has a fairly strong and long stride. IIRC he gets from 1st to 3rd fairly well, and can score from 2nd on hits that are not sharp liners. I’d guess he’s average baseball speed or slightly below, and there is nothing wrong with his lateral reflexes defensively.

Blalock
I followed that guy from A ball. Hitting for the cycle twice in back-to-back (I believe) games and making the All-Star team as a rookie, hitting the game-winning home run off Eric Gagne.
Then something happened to Mr. Hanky. He became somewhat of a malcontent, then he became an oft-injured malcontent. I knew Buck shielded him from lefties his first season, but the drop off was just depressing.
You guys know more about this stuff, I didn’t know about LSB before the Danks/McCarthy trade. I’ll miss what Blalock was turning into and what he could have been, but he wasn’t the same after his 2nd or 3rd season. Too bad.
