Couldn't decide

so I went with my 2010 fav-to-breakout candidate – Telis.
The arguing could be fun to watch on this one.

by shroomer on Dec 13, 2009 9:45 AM CST reply actions

No argument from me, Shroom

Switch-hitting catchers who can hit have huge value. And there seems to be little doubt that Telis can hit a baseball – 299/374/380 as a 17 yo in the DSL last year; 330/340/498 as an 18 yo in his stateside debut this season. In his two professional seasons, Telis has struck out just 35 times in 478 plate appearances!

Slugging .498 (12 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs) as an 18 year old is extremely impressive. Angels’ #1 prospect (according to Baseball Prospectus) was second in slugging among 18 year olds in the States at .486.

Other than the fact that he has yet to compete in a full season league, the key questions about Telis appear to be his plate approach and his defense. He walked just 4 times in 212 plate appearances this year which is obviously unacceptable. But he walked in almost 10% of his plate appearances in 2008 (25 walks in 266 plate appearances), so it appears that he knows how to work a pitcher. As for his defense, he apparently has the athleticism and arm to catch after being signed as a shortstop and then being converted to catcher.

I appreciate the Profar hype, but I don’t see how anyone can justify him at #10. If he does start in Hickory in 2010, he’ll be lucky to match the .574 OPS that Leury Garcia posted. Due to his long and impressive track record, MaxRam is the only other player that I can see voting for here.

Telis, Poveda, Moscoso, Max, Profar

you could make a case for any of those guys at this spot as well.

Yep, also

How can people vote for Beavan over Poveda and Moscoso? Don’t get it.

Why?

I don’t know much about him, outside of what BBTiA wrote up. Is is prospecty goodness enough to overcome the proximity or track record of the other guys in this class?

That's really what I'm leaning towards...

…but since I know less about some of the younger guys in this tier, I wanted to read the opinions first this time.

I like the ceiling (despite the reduced chance he’ll get there after his past year) of MaxRam enough to rank him above the more known quantities of Poveda and Moscoso, but I find it hard to compare him to players like Velazquez, Telis, Weiland, etc.

went with Kiker

he led the Texas League in Ks as a 21yo,

second, actually

Sam Deduno struck out 123 to Kiker’s 120, but did it in 133 total IP vs. Kiker’s 126. Plus, Deduno’s 26, so that non-prospect thing might apply.

But an 8.6 K/9 as a 21 year old in the Texas League is still pretty sweet.

I think at this point in the rankings, I am going to put more weight in how close the player is to the Majors and then look at their ceilings.

Strop for me.

I have a serious stiffy for his stuff. I see the late inning power arm (perhaps replacing 2009’s Feliz).

Obviously it’s all about his control (just like Kiker) but to me at least Strop’s stuff is head and shoulders above Kiker’s.

See

After the first 6-7, there’s a clump of about 20 guys or so who are all, if not interchangeable, at least similar in value.

The difference between the system this year and in the last couple of years is that in the 8-15 range, you don’t have the sort of guys who could be in the top 3 in other systems…but you do have guys in the 20-30 range who could probably crack the top 10 of a lot of systems.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 11:50 AM CST reply actions

Yah

2010 in the minors is about seeing who takes off from the #10-and-over category.

There’s a lot of youth and full-season A do-gooders (if not greaters). Brigham, Telis… If someone saw Beavan working out at the Fitness Factory and said he was really going after it, deep down I’d wonder whether that fastball might zing back.

Lot of ambiguity after that top tier.

yeah

The other day after we voted in DGut I said that there were two tiers done and now we were moving on to the third. Looking at the remaining list this morning tho’, it struck me that Moreland was the end of the 2nd tier and now there were like 20 guys remaining who all seem to have similarly sized question marks over their heads.

by shroomer on Dec 13, 2009 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

in that at least the next 20 or so guys are similar in value. I think the last few in the top 10 and maybe a few more after that are similar in value, then you have a pretty significant drop off in the prospects’ current value. Most of them have a good chance at breaking out, but a lot of these guys are too far away and unproven right now to fairly stack up next to someone like Beavan, Kiker, or even someone like Beltre. Then again, some people vote based 90% on ceiling.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

for me right now, Beavan

was all hype. He doesn’t walk guys, but damn he practically strikes out less — and that’s in AA. That does not translate well for success in the Bigs. I hope he gets a bump in his velocity and can start missing bats or it’ll be a long road for him to nowhere

The lack of Ks is definitely a concern, but he still has a lot of time left to figure things out at least to be a productive RP.

Yep

In the past, we probably would have expected to see Beavan in the Majors at some point of 2010/early 2011 as long as he wasn’t getting killed in the upper levels. Now, the team can take it slowly with Beavan and the only deadline to watch out for is his rule 5 eligibility.

Kiker again

Can’t really argue with Moreland at 9. Still don’t get all the Kiker hate. Yeah the guy walks a higher amount than normal but you can’t argue with what hes done either. I think guys hate him for who we weren’t able to get rather than who he is. The two pitchers picked right in front of Kiker were Lincecum and Scherzer which Kiker is nowhere close to but who picked after him (especially pitchers) would you rather have? The guy has done as well as could be expected and is right on line for his development. Starting next year as a 22 year old in AAA is still pretty young

No, Steven, I'm not going to get into this with you.

It’s a losing battle because when you make retarded statements like this:

I know I can’t possibly get any message I try to make through your fucking skull.

by LiamP on Dec 13, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

by all means give it a shot

Drabek career K/9: 7.6
Kiker career K/9: 9.0

As 21 year old in AA Drabek: 7.1 K/9 in 96.2 IP
As 21 year old in AA Kiker: 8.6 K/9 in 126 IP

Drabek is a nice prospect don’t get me wrong. But people act like Kiker at 10 in our system is a travesty. hes a pretty nice prospect himself.

He said I made a retarded statement

Everything I said in this statement

Drabek, Better control but not the strikeout guy Kiker is and has been injured

is correct. Pointing out their K rates is just one area. Drabek may be the better prospect I am not arguing that. But the Kiker hate is IMO unwarranted. Some people act like voting him at 10 is a huge travesty. I don’t think it is.

Robbie Ross got voted 6th in this poll and yet we can only hope he ever does what Kiker has already done. He won’t spend a full season in AA at age 21. He won’t finish 2nd in strikeouts in AA at age 21.

Ok, so I rethought my reasoning on going Kiker last time

Based on some of the discussion in the last thread. Realized that I’d probably have him lower than a couple other guys, namely MaxRam and Moscoso.

I’m tempted to go Profar here, given how high the Rangers are on him, but I think I’ll wait awhile yet. It looks like it won’t matter who I vote for here since Kiker is running away with it, but I’ll give my boy Max a vote for posterity’s sake before he officially leaves our system.

I thought really, really long and hard about this.

I finally decided to go ahead and give Beltre’s upside a lot of due. It’s not usually the way I lean on prospects, but it seems like if (yes, big if) he figures out plate discipline, he’ll be insane, and it’s just enough to give him a nudge over the rest of the people I have in contention here.

I almost voted for Kiker or Moscoso instead, and it looks like Kiker will be advancing.

Also, I will not vote for Max Ram. Partly just to make deciding easier.
