Cruz Injured in Winter Ball
Dominican Republic: Rangers OF Nelson Cruz has received good news on his recent injury. An MRI has revealed no fracture in his ankle; he only has inflammation, and will only require rest to heal.
Ugh. Stop playing winter ball already Nellie. He looked worn down at the end of last year as it was.

Concur...
You’re an everyday player in the bigs now Nellie, use the fall/winter to rest up.
I’m not an Insider, so is this the same ankle that he hurt this season in Oakland?

I didn't know he was playing winter ball?
I thought this was his first true offseason. Ugh.

exactly, why are they having him play
this much. your body can only take so much
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
It's his choice to play
he’s said that he feels “obligated” to play in the Dominican. Sorry man but you’re obligated to healthy and rested to play for the Rangers, not some winter league team.

A lot of guys from countries with winter ball leagues feel the same obligation.
They want to help sell tickets for their local economies. I agree he needs to stop playing now. Kind of reminds me of Dirk taking off last summer’s FIBA competition which is helping him play at a really impressive level this year. Wish Nelson would do the same.

Very true that
And Nellie prolly feels an extra obligation there too, as they allowed him to showcase when he was considered a AAA player.

Should be AAAA
As in 4A.

yep
agreed, especially if he wants to be successful enough to make more money in the big leagues, you wouldn’t screw around in the crappy winter leagues.

yep
Hes only making ~500 K next season and if he reverts back to his old form he won’t ever make it to arbitration

Quick Question
Do they have a DH in the DR winter leagues? I would feel better if he wasn’t playing in the OF everyday

I wish they could put more stipulations in contracts like..
you can’t play winter ball or you can’t show up 30 lbs. overweight like Andruw Jones did with the Dodgers for 16 million a year or whatever he was making. Cruz should NOT be playing winter ball, he could show up all banged up for ST and thats fucked up, same goes for lazy dudes who want to eat everything in sight after inking big contracts.
So who's todays mistress? They're coming out of the Woodswork!
I don't understand these knee-jerk reactions.
Yes, you can get hurt playing baseball. You can also get hurt driving a car, riding a bike, or in the weight room. You might twist an ankle while jogging.
Relatively speaking, baseball is a pretty safe sport. I’d rather have my players playing winter ball than driving 120+ MPH down a highway in Germany, playing football, experimenting in the weight room, swimming with sharks, or hand-feeding alligators.
Cruz has always played winter ball. He sprains his ankle one time after finally sticking in the bigs and he suddenly needs to stop? Get real.
I think CJ Wilson
Does everything you mentioned in the middle sequence, haha.

depends on which hand they are feeding the gators with
is it their throwing hand?

Agree, NoName
Those complaining about Nellie playing winter ball don’t seem to have any concern for the relationship between Caribbean players and their country and the importance of winter ball to that relationship.

Luis Mendoza (2.76 ERA/.243 BAA) returned to his dominant ways on Sunday evening. The 26-year-old righty yielded just one unearned run in eight innings of work. He scattered six hits and fanned seven without walking a batter.
