That's why the other games are so important.

although
i do find it interesting that chris redman and co are moving the ball so well against the saints d. and last week it was jason campbell.
i really hope our running game gets sorted out soon.
which would mean LESS Barber in 1st half.
and more Choice.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I was listening to morons last night...
…say that the Texans need to draft Colt McCoy.
Bleah.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 12:29 PM CST reply actions
Gross.
Although I feel about McCoy’s NFL future the same way I did about Aaron Rodgers’, and I was completely wrong there. We’ll see. He is pretty accurate.
I just know that I wouldn’t draft him in the first.
Maybe the Texans will move up for Mays if he starts falling or just take Nate Allen. A lot of mocks have them taking a RB.

Houston SportsTalk is awful.
I can’t believe you’re forced to choose between Jim Rome and Colin Cowherd at one point.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

1560 has Tim Brando on from 10-1
He’s good. Of course, they follow it with Ken Hoffman, who is an abortion, and who really barely pretends to talk sports…he makes the Hardline sound like a hard-core Xs and Os sports show in comparison.

Okay
I’m finished watching the Texans. There are too many other good games out there.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 12:33 PM CST reply actions
I'm a Raider fan
and curious if they’re going to draft somebody like Bradford (who may slide).
Hopefully it’s not my anti-UT bias but I don’t think Colt can play in the NFL but Kiper has him as a Top 20 pick.
Big gamblin’ day for me, all over the Pats, Bengals, Texans and Saints.
I really like Dallas to win today as well.

Don't like Colt
Chad Pennington at best

No shit.
You could do a lot worse than Chad Pennington.

Yeah
but that’s his best case scenario.

I don't know what to believe about Colt
because there is so much bullshit being espoused by the UT hype machine. He seems like a great kid but the hype kills it for me.
He was terrible against both Oklahoma & Nebraska plus also threw 2 INTs v Tech.
I wonder if Shipley becomes the next Welker.

Colt's a second rounder
His problems are the lack of arm strength and a seeming inability to throw under pressure. He does very poorly when the o-line crumbles… which would not serve him well on a bad team. I could see him being a decent player who bounces around for a while, though, like Jeff Garcia or Pennington.
by Conjunction on Dec 13, 2009 12:48 PM CST up reply actions
Colt may be a Rich Gannon-type of QB
who could thrive in a short passing game scheme like the Raiders had with Gruden that was fairly successful earlier this decade.

I don't know what to think about Colt either
The kid just wins.
But his performance sometimes leaves alot to be desired. Is that on him or something else. Numerous times this year opposing defensive players have said how easy it was to know exactly what Texas was going to do just about every single play. There is little to no creativity with Greg Davis and his offense. People say all the time how we “take what the defense gives us” but I call bullshit. A truly good offense can dictate to the defense.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
btw, who is Texas' next QB?

Gilbert.
Supposed to be pretty good but I think the Shipley loss is really going to hurt.
I thought he was better than Colt this year.

Jevan Snead got all the buzz
It wasn’t until they started playing that Colt got all the buzz which I think you could say was well deserved given how he’s done

Ya gotta understand…nobody was happier than Tech fans to see Vince (best college player I ever saw) go early but then we kept hearing about this kid named Colt that was supposed to be pretty good as well.
I’m hoping that Gilbert is much closer to Chris Simms than somebody like Major Applewhite. Simms had a ton of talent but was a pussy with no heart.

I think you are confusing Snead and Colt
Colt was expected to be a 4 year backup

Yes, Snead had the hype
as the recruit but once they were on campus, I kept hearing about Colt McCoy.

Well of course because this 3 star recruit was beating out a 4 or 5 star
Of course there was buzz which I think we can all say was warranted now that Colt has become the all time wins leader. But Colt never had the buzz during recruiting that Gilbert has had
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Colt was very good
but the hype surrounding him this season was sickening (he was much better last year).

I think Locker is a good fit in St. Louis
McCoy in Seattle, where he can sit a year or 2 behind Hass
Claussen in Carolina
Seattle
The way Hasslebeck is always injured Colt would play
I wouldn’t mind seeing him in Minnessota if Favre decides to return for another year
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I like that.
Though I could see Clausen being good in St. Louis, too.

I was watching some of the Heisman
crap last night and he was a big (vomit) soccer player as a kid.
I hate the sport but it’s very good for athletic development at an early age just for the sake of coordination.
I loved having kids who played select soccer on the youth basketball teams I coached because they could run all day and had excellent coordination.
One of Suh’s greatest strengths is his footwork.

YES!
From dominance in one game (4.5 sacks, 7 TFL, 12 tackles) to dominance over a season (basically, per game he was @ 1 sack, 2 TFL’s, 1 pass batted down and 0.25 blocks per game), to the comparisons he’s getting (Sapp, White, Joe Greene), it’s a crime that he finished 4th in Heisman balloting.

The hype was warranted earlier this season

Well
Let’s look at the teams that need a QB:
Cleveland
St. Louis
Buffalo
Oakland?
Washington
Seattle?
Denver?
Minnesota?
Of those, 5 will be way too high for McCoy. Now, Seattle and Denver are two to watch because they have 2 1sts, but I feel like they both have enough other areas to address.
I kinda feel that if Minnesota doesn’t have their heart set on McCoy, he slides to the second.

I'm not sure what to think of RedBox and Netflix
They’re putting all the Blockbusters in South Arlington out of business. And much like I can’t imagine a world without newspapers, it’s reeeally freaking me out that video stores are going out of business also

redbox is good now
But could be great if they stocked better movies. $1 for a day rental. If you keep it longer its a dollar a day capped at $24. I don’t watch enough movies to do netflix but its a good model also. Blockbuster never adapted to new technology and was slow to see the competition coming

And I was hesitant for a long time because I liked the idea of going to a place to look and getting it right away—and I still do if I want it fast—but Netflix streaming and other instantaneous rentals are the future.

Meh. Doesn't bother me.
Blockbuster has pissed me of on more than a few occasions, I stopped going their years ago. I don’t know if they’re all like this, but the Hastings in College Station was fantastic and generally cheaper. That’s the only one I had been to.
If you’re a huge movie fan, netflix is a better deal. If you just rent a couple movies a month, redbox is a better deal. And for how often Blockbuster screwed me over, I’m glad for it.

In fact I think a NO win is the worst case. NO has made it known they want the 16-0 season. Until they lose they are going to play for that. Once they lose then I think they will smart up and rest some starters for the playoffs.

Penalties kill the first drive and they settle for a FG. Sound familiar?
Defense plays great on1st and 2nd down, then gives up big play on 3rd down. Sound Familiar?
Offensive line can’t handle blitz-pickups from a 3-4 Defense. Sound familiar?

Dallas is capable of beating the Chargers.
The gap in talent isn’t as large as you’re making it out to be.
My point's that unpredictable things happen a lot in the NFL.
And calling a game over for the home team at 10-3 with 35-40 minutes left to play is, in my opinion, somewhat silly, not least because unpredictable things happen a lot in the NFL.
And of course the Cowboys’ problems are not going to cause the Chargers to have problems. That’s just silly.
I think the Chargers are better on offense.
But the Cowboys are better on defense right now (health plays a role).
It worries me that penalties and sacks are hurting them so badly on first down that they are abandoning their biggest advantage: the run game.

I admit that. Still, four dives seems a little…stubborn.
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
Yeah it was playcalling
On 4th and 1 you don’t give it to the fullback even if that is Barber. The fullback only has a yard or two of head steam so its harder for that guy to force his way into the endzone.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
this is just wrong
it’s been proven over and over again it’s wrong. and barber is very good from teh FB position on short yardage
Look what happened
Barber got it and was hit and couldn’t power through
A fullback dive is a straight on play no room to cut or anything. You don’t need a huge hole just a crease but if theres not one you have no time or room to make guys miss
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
the line is to blame absolutely
But if that handoff is to the deep back even with a guy coming through the line you have a shot to make him miss
The FB doesn’t have that chance since hes so close to the line
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
He at least has a chance to make them miss
Or bounce off or something. The FB has almost zero chance to do anything

who was he mad at?
himself? seemed like he got mad at the coverage team – but he should probably not get mad at them
well
i guess they just need to get a stop the first drive and something good might happen.
But, what are the cowboys supposed to do without a FG kicker?
what do you think the chances of winning are?
I give it somewhere around 20% – which to me is over. I still might watch the bottom of the 9th when we are down by 3 but I’m not holding my breath
I don't count a 1 in 5 chance of winning as anything close to "over," first of all,
and I’d give the Cowboys a 1 in 3 chance from here on out. It’s the NFL; freaky things happen.
Like not scoring from the opponents’ 1 and 24 on back-to-back drives.
It's the combo that's both disappointing and unusual.
And I mean, looking at things from a league-wide perspective. Ain’t many teams that fail to come up with any points in that situation. Freaky things happen ~ like heretofore cold-eyed-killer kickers losing their shit completely.
Folk's collapse has been quite epic.
Need to send that guy to an exorcist or something.

i guess i don't understand your point
yes, weird things have happened to the cowboys. but they are also playing like a snake bitten team and their kicker is terrible. nothing that has happened to their offense is all that unexpected.
now, if the chargers all of a sudden just tank, i would find that extremely unexpected. I don’t see how the cowboys so called unexpected events pave the way for the chargers tanking. very rarely does an offense that is so dominant all of a sudden stop working.
I guess our coaches could do a better job of scheming. that’s what we have to look forward to
My point's that unpredictable things happen regularly in the NFL.
And calling a game over for the home team at 10-3 with 35-40 minutes left to play is, in my opinion, somewhat silly, not least because unpredictable things happen a lot in the NFL.
And of course the Cowboys’ problems are not going to cause the Chargers to have problems. That’s just silly.
i realize the mantra of any given sunday
but i just dont’ think it is as variable as you are making it sound, especially after a certain precedent has been set for the game.
It's not just "any given Sunday."
It’s looking how both teams have played, what their respective talent levels are, and seeing how weird the game’s been so far. The Cowboys haven’t played as badly as 3 points in the first half might indicate, and the Chargers haven’t exactly just destroyed them through the first half.
There’s still an awful lot of football to be played, and a lucky (or “freaky”) break at the right time could put the Cowboys on top.
It’s not over.
I don't know if not scoring from the 1 was freaky.
Garrett ran the same damn play 4 times in a row. They knew it was coming and had it stopped. Yeah, usually it works, but in that case it didn’t. I think he should have tried to run it outside or something, switch it up. Barber wasn’t getting that yard, and you know that’s what’s going to happen with Barber in the game at the goal-line. I can call the play from my couch, the defense can too.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
technically, it wasnt the same play 4x in a row however
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

Technically, no.
But they gave it to the same back and ran it to the same hole 4 times in a row. Close enough.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
well if you are going to classify it like that
might as well just say “it’s the same – 4 runs”
3rd down was barber in the RB position with the FB going left and Barber going right.
4th down was Barber from the FB position with a pulling guard going left.
Those are different plays
Reminds me of what Ray Lewis said about this offense a year ago.
Something along the lines of “we knew exactly what they would do before they did it.”

I was there with the party pass too. My experience wasn’t that bad. Went to the Rangers game against the Angels first, left in the 7th inning or so after Wash misused the bullpen and we got too far behind to come back. Went and stood in line at the stadium at like 3 pm, got in right when the doors opened and got a spot right on the rail on the second level. Had to stand there to keep my spot for like 4 hours before the game started, but other than that it wasn’t too bad.

Everything changed when the Colts got manhandled a few years ago in the playoffs by the Pats.
Receivers interfere with DBs just as much as DBs do with them, imo.

Play would've looked great; I'm still not sure about the play call.
But second-guessing’s too easy, I suppose; the argument could be made that the Chargers would’ve been waiting for that first-down run, so…
Romo has no confidence right now, probably because they keep dropping his passes.

i really wouldn’t mind something new. because it looks like it’s going to be a couple of mid to long runs and long completions so that they get at least a FG

99 yards. very very good when they really needed it

The Cowboys are clearly outplaying the Chargers...

I like the idea of a LB or DE in the first.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions
well
I’m assuming you mean ILB.
But in terms of DE, I just don’t think that is the issue. They get decent amount of pressure but our OLB’s just aren’t getting to the QB. And you’re not going to replace our OLB’s, are you? Even if you want to spell them, I think we have a good OLB that we don’t play already
For the line
The best solution would probably be to find a true NT and move Ratliff over, but absent that, I feel that Olshansky and Spears are strict run-stoppers. Obviously, in a 3-4, the need for end rushing goes down, but it’s not a position of strength by any means.
As for LB, I leave it open. I feel that James and Brooking for sure can be upgraded, and I like a lot of what Spencer does, but we just have to get more pressure that we have this year.
I’d say my top guys to target would be Rolando McClain, Terrence Cody, Bulaga, and Spikes.

Gimme a break. Getting a top 4 QB in the NFL is worth a top 5 pick.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 5:59 PM CST up reply actions
That's like saying that if you sign Alex Rodriguez for league minimum. . .
. . . but you spend the rest of the money on crap, it was a bad signing. It’s poor logic.
Romo + an average first round pick is better than Rivers + an average UFA. Whether the latter move in either example is sound doesn’t make the first lesser value.
Football is not baseball.
Certain positions matter much, much more. You can talk about value all you want, but we’re talking about the the elite players in the game.
Would you trade Philip Rivers for a first round pick right now? Your original comment was “I’d rather get Romo as a UFA than spend a first on Rivers”. You have no idea that what Romo was going to turn into, but with Rivers, the odds were better that he would become an elite QB. Romo doesn’t make a rule, he is an exception.
If New England really thought that Brady could become what he is as soon as he did, would they have picked him so late? No, they thought they were picking a backup to an established starter in Bledsoe.
I guess my basic point is, one way of acquiring an elite player is not better than another. You just want to acquire them. Since Rivers is an elite player and Romo goes in and out of elite status, I’d rather have Rivers.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 6:11 PM CST up reply actions
I think I'd rather have Rivers, too.
But I’d rather have Romo and all of my draft picks than Rivers. Easily.
I might trade a first for Rivers for the return we could probably get for Romo, though.
Also, from reading Belichick’s biography, I really don’t agree with you on Brady. Not that they were assured he’d be as good as he became, but I’m fairly ceratin they thought there was a good chance they were grooming the future at QB. Not that this relates in any way to the point.
You're confusing results with process.
I think the Chargers have a better process, especially when it comes to the draft.
Their biggest blunder of the past 5 years was not trying to get value for Brees via trade. Then again, a guy coming off surgery probably wouldn’t have had as much value. It’s hard to imagine now, but Brees was thought of in a similar way that Matt Schaub is thought of now.
Other than that, what do they do wrong? Maybe not hire the best coaching options, preferring experience (Turner) over promise (Payton, Smith, etc).
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions
Oh, I'd definitely rather have a better FO and coaching staff with a better process and better game calling and preparation. . .
. . . and Tony Romo for no draft pick, instead of Phillip Rivers for a first round pick.
Also, I definitely disagreed with the Chargers picking Rivers over Brees and could probably scrounge up some message board threads where you’d find a lot of people who disagree. I don’t know that I thought Brees would be quite this good, but I also didn’t know that Rivers would be this good, either, and thought Brees was closer to a sure thing and already the better QB.
Yeah, I thought it was odd, too.
But people underrate how good Rivers is because he doesn’t get the attempts that some other players do. He’s really really good.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

They didn’t ‘want’ it bad enough? This is the type of BS they spout over at bloggingtheboys. San Diego is a better team, especially on offense, and you’re seeing them beat a Cowboys defense without their best player.

that's not true
the SD offense was just much better than ours. when they weren’t scoring, it was because they were making mistake,s not because we were doing something right
I didn't say the Cowboys were a better team.
But this was a winnable ballgame.
You could just as easily argue that it was because Cowboys made stupid mistakes that they lost ~ not that the Chargers were doing something right.
Exactly. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Doesn’t help that we lost Ware either. Helps even less that this bunch of heartless pussies laid down and died after he was carted off. We could have won this ballgame, nobody can convince me otherwise.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
no
what mistakes did the D make? they got pushed around and out schemed. There was just now way I could see a cowboys D pulling it out today. There is no accident to the drive that SD put together to end the game
20 points, the Chargers scored.
That’s not a great day. That wasn’t a great performance. There was the turnover, and it was a stupid mistake, but then again, that was after the Cowboys failed to punch it in from the 1.
The defense did not play that badly today. Too many 3rd-and-long conversions? Sure. But this was a very good offense they were facing, and they gave up 20 points.
This was a winnable game.
I mean, we're talking 8 seconds difference.
And, fine, you want to dock the Cowboys the last couple minutes? Go ahead. Still nearly even.
Also? Tomlinson?
21 carries, 50 yards. Chuck out a couple of the short, late carries on the last drive, on you’re still talking 15 for 45, or some such. I know the Chargers are a pass-first, jump-ball team, but it was the big plays that killed the Cowboys, not getting pushed around.
Now out-schemed? That I’ll give you. But I’d have never argued that Cowboys were a better coached or smarter team than the Chargers, ever. Because they aren’t.
Taking that a bit further:
Can’t score from the 1, three times in a row.
Can’t hit a 42-yard field goal.
Stupid, unnecessary pass interference penalty in 1st quarter.
And, of course, the injury to Ware.
The Cowboys defense held the Chargers to 20 points.
only because this game had really long drives
the cowboys D rarely stopped the offense. And if they have the same performance against NO they might still “only” give up 24 but they will lose.
What?!
The Chargers started one drive at their own 44 in the second half and couldn’t score. And, if I recall correctly, had pretty damn good field position a couple other times and couldn’t drive it home.
The defense looked bad at times, but the Chargers have a good offense, and this was not a blowout (as some had predicted).
And Ware going down hurt. You may want to dismiss it, especially during that last drive, but it did hurt.
look
when we tied the game, they got a 90 yd TD drive right after. And then they put the game away with the 6 minute drive. I don’t think those things are flukey – we still had a chance things. I think you do certain things in the 3rd quarter when you are winning and change up your offensive game plan to put the game away in the 4th.
I think that's a lot of post-hoc rationalization
to support an argument that this game was over at 10-3 in the 2nd quarter.
I don’t think there was anything inevitable about that 90-yard touchdown drive, any more than I think there was anything inevitable about Ware going down, or a 38-year pass interference penalty, or not punching the ball in three times from the one-yard line.
a 90 yard TD drive isn't just one play
the 60 yard field goal try isn’t one play. it’s proof that they are just better.
I never said they weren't better.
In fact, I said the opposite.
I said this was a winnable game. The Cowboys could have won this game, as it was played, despite the Chargers being a better team, because:
(a) the talent gap isn’t that wide; and
(b) the Chargers didn’t play a great game today, either.
And a freaky play in the 4th quarter
might well have tipped the scales, which was my argument way back at the half…
i'm saying that the fact that they weren't one play cuts against it being freaky
i get that a SD fumble or INT could have changed things but they were playing ridiculously disciplined football save the INT.
Cuts against what being freaky?
I’m not saying the long drives were freaky. I’m saying that, as you yourself point out, one weird bounce, or an unfortunate tip ~ stuff that has much less to do with discipline than with luck ~ in the 4th quarter, and the Cowboys are suddenly in a position to win the ballgame.
Would that have been freaky, rather than a sign of Dallas’ superiority as a team? Yes. Did it happen? Of course not.
But you make it sounds as if the outcome of this game was pre-determined from the outset, or from 10-3 in the second quarter, or at the beginning of the 4th quarter when it was still tied. And I don’t agree at all that that was the case.
And one more comment, in that vein:
One freaky bounce or tip or whatever does not matter nearly as much to a team that’s getting blown out, because if the team’s down by 14 or 17 or 21 late in the game, there’s still a lot of tough sledding to do to get back on top, and not much time to do it.
But in a tie game in the 4th quarter? Big, big difference.
there aren't really lucky things like that
you make it sound like there’s a 5% chance of an INT on every play just because the wind affects the ball or some shit. there just isn’t a lot of freaky occurrences and outcomes in the NFL.
whatever this is stupid. fine. there was a 5% chance that some random shit could have happened to give the cowboys the ball one more time. And I still think they would have lost.
stupid argument
Why do you keep putting words in my mouth?
Just read what I post ~ don’t try to post for me.
You’re the one who proclaimed this game over, repeatedly, with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter and the Cowboys down 10-3. I get that you want to feel justified about making that assertion, and arguing with people who questioned it, but the fact is, this game was not over then, and it wasn’t even over at the start of the 4th quarter.
Bullshit.
This team quit after Ware went down. And San Diego is not a better team, they are pretty evenly matched.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
I know there is no way to prove one of us right, but if I could bet my life savings:
I’d bet you San Diego is the better team.
Well apparently so.
I think we could have beaten them though. So whatever that means.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
Well, no, not apparently so.
One game is a ridiculously small sample size.
I agree we could have beaten them, but I’m still pretty sure they’re better.
To be fair, though, DVOA (the closest thing we could probably find to an objective end to the argument) thinks we’re better. It’s got us 9th at 20% better per play than the average team, and it’s got them 13th at 10%. So. . . there’s some support for you.
well we could still hope for a miracle missed FG
if they actually stop them here.

Dick Vermiel talks about how brilliant but crazy Martz is, and how often he’d have to stop Martz from calling what he wanted because it was clearly treating real football like it was a video game. And that correllates well with what we saw in reality: as an OC with Vermiel, the offense was awesome and fundementally sound, once Martz was his own check and balance, he did things like using his time outs to prove he didn’t need them and ignoring the fact that the Patriots were extremely weak against the run and he had one of the greatest RBs who ever lived because he liked passing it (against 7 man defensive backfields at times, btw).
So I guess I might like him as an OC if we had a HC that would keep his crazy in check.
I think that team goes undefeated with a better head coach.
But I also think a poor head coach can win the Super Bowl with some good luck and great talent.
And they didn’t win the Super Bowl because of his play calling in that Super Bowl, which still remains as one of the most egregiously managed sporting events I’ve ever seen.
is that a documentary philkid?

The NFL Network did a series called America's Game
And they’re the best football documentaries I’ve ever seen.
Each talks about a single Super Bowl winner (and a few about great teams that didn’t win), picking three significant figures to interview and with a nifty celebrity voice over for the rest.
Very, very, very high quality and very informative.
hmm i may have to look at them
thanks man

No.
Rivers>Romo.
VJack>Austin
SD RBs>Dal RBs
When healthy, their O-line is better.
D-lines and LB’s are a wash. Their secondary is better.
Their special teams are much, much better.

Not today.
If you asked me at the beginning of the year, I would have said clearly the Cowboys. But Felix has been disappointing since he got hurt. It’s probably more of a gut reaction to today’s game, which is bad.
Still, I wish they were as much better as they thought they were at the beginning of the year. Maybe they just need more health…

I remember when I went to see the Cowboys fall to pieces against the Seahawks in Seattle one year.
Everyone can probably remember the game I was talking about. Walking out surrounded by Seahawks fans going psycho down the mob on Pike Street literally probably ranks right behind having my fiance leave me as the worst emotional moment of my life.
I remember some Seahawks fan started grabbing me and crowing about his team and trying to get me to talk shit back to him, and some other Cowboys fan (the stadium was more Dallas fans, btw) came up and punched him and said “YOU DO NOT TOUCH HIM.” Never met the guy.

Maybe, but I think I ruin them.
I let the Cowboys completely dictate my mood in the fall and winter, and they have haven’t given me reasons to be happy for an entire season since I was 10. The Rangers don’t affect me as much, but they still make me a more bitter human than I should be.
And don’t even get me started on Washington State sports, which are worse than the Cowboys could ever be, have less chance of ever being as good as the Cowboys are, and dictate my emotions even more.
The problem here, of course, is not sports; it’s that I’m a head case who should probably stay away.

The west side is very green with a lot of emphasis on water and mountains. It rains a lot 9 months of the year, stays pretty even in temperature, and is crawling with hardcore liberals. Lots of big cities making their money in things like computer technology.
The east side is very flat and brown with lots of emphasis on major rivers and empty fields. It never rains and is extremely hot in the summer and very cold in the winter and is crawling with hardcore conservatives. Lots of empty area between mid-sized towns making their money in things like agriculture.
Yes...
but you know what? All of that means we’ll earn that toast at the bar with our fellow sufferers when our team finally hoists a meaningful trophy. That’s why we go through the heart break. All of those bad Mondays after tough Sundays. All of those sleepless, fitful long nights with the team on the west coast after a walk off win by a division rival. All of the weeks of attention and the months of adoration only rivaled by the animosity and the years of devotion wouldn’t mean ANYTHING if there wasn’t games that left you devastated.
We only know good as a sports fan because we’ve lived the bad.

On a per game basis this year in the regular season, he was at 1 sack, 2 TFL, 1 batted down pass, 0.25 blocked kicks.
Big 12 Championship game: 4.5 sacks, 7 TFL’s, 12 tackles.
And he’s a DT!

I think Taylor Mays is overrated.
He can flatten you, but he’s not the ball-hawk that Berry is and that’s what I think we need back there. Berry reminds me of Ed Reed. No doubt Suh is a monster though. But with Olshansky, Ratliff, and Spears (isn’t he going to be a FA though?) and some pretty good backups it would be really hard for me to pick him over a safety like that. I wouldn’t be mad about either pick, I just think FS is the bigger need.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
I think Ratliff will be taking Spears spot next year
And we bring in a true NT, whether that be a free agent or 1st round pick, I dont know… it looks like their might be some decent NTs on the FA market
I don't think Ratliff woudl be as effective from the DE.
The DE’s in this scheme are run stoppers and space eaters. Ratliff is just a freak.
If you did get Suh, seems like it would be best to switch to a 4-3 with Ware, Olshanksy, Ratliff, and Suh all next to each other. Chub.

The bigger picture here is the character of this football team.
It’s easy to point to a few plays as being the cause of a loss. “Gee whiz, if that had just gone right, this is a different ballgame”, etc. But there’s a reason things go right for good teams and wrong for bad teams—it’s in their character. Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. Dallas could write a textbook on finding ways to lose games. They just got their asses handed to them on their own turf in a big December game—something that happens frequently to this team.
So who is to blame? Who sets the tone? It starts with the head coach. If you have a weak head coach, your team is going to be weak. And you can’t point to one little thing they do differently, whether it is shouting more, or whatever you want to pick. It’s an attitude. Good coaches expect their teams to win. Their players start expecting to win.
These Cowboys find ways to lose because they expect bad things to happen. They start playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Cupcake has got to go. He was the wrong choice to begin with, he should have been gone after last season, and he should not be here next year. He’s had three years of very talented teams and has allowed their shortcomings to overcome their assets. Time to move on. Get rid of your problem players like Adams, get a coach that’s proven they can win, and get after it in 2010.
I get that this is your bit
But it doesn’t make sense. Mike Tomlin said he was going to unleash hell, and they lost 3 more in a row.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:21 PM CST up reply actions
It's not a bit.
This was my sport. I’ve played for good coaches and not so good. The locker room changes based on who is setting the tone. Good coaches find ways to win. Players are human beings. As a group, they will perform differently for different leaders. It really is that simple.
What are you arguing exactly?
That coaches don’t matter? I need to know what your position is here. If you’re just trying to engage in a Socratic devil’s advocate bit, I’ll pass.
I'm arguing
That saying a coach is “hard” or “soft” seems like an ex post facto exercise in checking out wins and losses.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions
Hard or soft?
What do you mean “hard or soft”?
Good leadership doesn’t have to be “hard or soft”. Some coaches have it and others don’t. Their ability to lead tends to be reflected in the win/loss column, but that in and of itself isn’t the only thing you should look at.
So what are you looking at
To say that Norv Turner was a better hire in 2007 than Wade Phillips?

With the talent this team had coming into 2007, and given Norv’s track record with talented players when he was here under Jimmy, I think he was the better hire. Cupcake’s only real qualification seemed to be that he was going to be the polar opposite of Parcels as far as how he would treat the players.
Norv
Had a horrible, horrible record as a head coach.
There’s no way to get around that.

its not likep hllips had a well above average one either

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

I'm not saying he did
There weren’t a lot of great choices that offseason. But I’m not the one saying things would be different with any of them.

Um
You’re the one saying Turner was the better hire. I don’t think there’s an ounce of difference between dog shit and pig shit.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions
Then again, what is your point?
What effect, if any, does the HC have on winning or losing clubs?
A good deal
But it has nothing to do with being a cupcake or a pussy or whatever you’re claiming Phillips is. He just makes worse decisions and schemes than he should.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions
So the coach can only affect the plays called?
Other than that, all players will perform equally under any coach? Is that what you’re saying?
Plays, schemes, and strategies, yeah.
You really think an 8 year vet gives a shit about the pregame speech or how many pushups he had to do?

You ever actually play football?
Say, from the high school level up?
Good lord.
What a loser’s argument.
If you played in the NFL, then OK—I’ll accept it.
There’s a fundamental difference between high school/college and the NFL.
One is a fucking job.

I've heard a few NFL players agree with you.
Rodney Harrison comes to mind immediately. Warren Sapp also once laughed at someone in an ESPN interview for talking about pep talks actually doing much for NFL players.
so you think that
wade phillips, jimmy johnson, bill cowher and bill parcells have the same impact on leadership in a locker room?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

No
I think those other guys are better schemers than Wade.
Frankly, I could give two shits about some juvenile notion of motivation or whatever. It’s a profession. Get your ass in there and use what you have to the best of its ability and hope it’s better than the other guy.

thats simply not the case in sports
and you know it as well as i do. why sohuld a player play harder when he he is playing for a contract? why should he play easier when he has the contract? he shouldnt, but thats a reality in sports

You clearly have no concept of what a HC does.
If it was as simple as just setting schemes, that would be one thing. A HC sets the tone for a team from the first offseason workout to the last game of the season. It ain’t just pep talks. It’s expectations. Good coaches find ways to raise their players expectations. A team is reflection of their HC. If he coaches dirty, they’ll play dirty. If he’s disciplined and expects them to be, they’ll be more disciplined. It’s not just a job unless you care nothing about winning. If your HC ignores all other responsibilities but schemes because his players are just employees and ought to know better, then be prepared to root for some really shitty teams.
mike singletary applauds your statement
but is left wondering why his teams always suck. so does jack del rio. so does lovie smith.
god, you sound like a crotchety old man – who should be in love with jim leyland and probably ron washington
You still have to have talent to win.
Good coaches make bad teams better, but it’s still difficult to make them champions.
You sound like a kid that’s played too much Madden and thinks all HC’s are created equal.
you want to know what you sound like?
cause i think there’s a growing consensus about it.
needless to say, you don’t sound right
actually I'll just say it
you sound like sharky, except the dumber version. at least sharky is more correct when he says that OC’s make a lot of the difference (he says all) but there is at least truth to that. you can see schemes winning ball games.
what you are talking about has been disproven all the time. except you have it easy. when a “good” coach doesn’t win, you blame it on the players. when a “bad” coach doesn’t win, you blame it on the coach. convenient
I'm ready for wade to be gone
but I don’t think a new coach, whoever it is, isn’t going to be some miracle cure for the Cowboys problems. Coaching is a problem, but it’s not the only one

Very simple.
Their defense is what carries that team. They are not the same defense without Troy Polamalu. Their record with him and without him speaks for itself.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
much like indy with bob sanders
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
by knockoutking on Dec 13, 2009 6:32 PM CST up reply actions
They've got pretty good depth there.
Besides, Troy Polamalu>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bob Sanders.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
sanders is pretty damn good
look at his stats when hes healthy

I think
You’re greatly overvaluing Polamalu.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions
Really?
I dont think thats possible. He is the difference between a great defense and an average defense
as, historically, has been sanders
over the past few years
txhc is UNDERvaluing sanders
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
by knockoutking on Dec 13, 2009 6:51 PM CST up reply actions
Don't get me wrong.
He’s a good safety, I know. I’m not saying he isn’t. But he’s no Polamalu. Besides, Indy has some pretty good depth at that position.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
I've never watched a pittsburgh game that
a healthy Polamalu didn’t impress me in.
the preceding post was a great success.
I guess this is getting misunderstood
I don’t doubt his absolute greatness.
I just think txhc is overvaluing him.

whats their record with and without ben rothlesburger?
what about the colts with and without peyton manning?
so your saying that hes their most important defensive player, yes. he is.
we get that
but hes not the bestp layer in the NFL
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.

That's retarded.
Not to put too fine a point on it.
by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:33 PM CST up reply actions
If you say so.
Again, watch the games and look at the record if you don’t believe me. Pittsburgh’s offense isn’t great, never has been. Their defense is though, and they are not the same without Troy Polamalu. The man is a BEAST people don’t realize just how big a part of that defense he really is.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
I think so
I liked him at Michigan, more of an Orton type of QB though.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar

There are some decent FAs, out there
With it likely being an uncapped year, I expect some quality additions
Have you not met Miles Austin?
The receivers aren’t the problem on this team.

i feel confident that the cowboys problem does not lie here:
in general/overall
WR
TE
RB

I'm fairly confident I know what I have with Romo.
And the guards are generally fine. Center was a concern because of snap issues, but they seem to have that worked out. Their poor ability to pick up middle blitzes is frustrating, but no O-line is perfect.
It’s hard to decide on defense. They don’t have many below average players, which adds up to an above average defense. But I’m not sure they have enough playmakers. Maybe Spears (though he’s been better and DE’s don’t make big plays in this system), maybe a general upgrade to the secondary.
But when healthy, there’s no Jacque Reeves, Roy Williams, or Akin Ayodele on this team.

Outside of Austin, I've been unimpressed with the play at WR this season.
Have I been overlooking someone or something?
are they one of the problems going forward?
i just dont think so (to me) are they earth shattering? no but are they a place where we def. need to bring in a new starter? i dont think so

I think WR is neither a strength nor a weakness.
In today’s NFL, that could hold the Cowboys back ~ but I agree that this is not the most pressing position to address.
We need a small, quicky, speedy reciever in the slot
Crayton doesnt mesh well with our outside receivers
Nearly 1100 posts and I can't tell a difference.
We really don’t need those 400 post GDT stoppages.
Anyway, to go OT.. Dexter finale tonight – anyone been watching? Great season I think.
the preceding post was a great success.
I can.
It’s faster than a 500 post GDT tends to be, I’m assuming because of 1) no gifs and 2) not quite as many people rushing to post at once.
But there is still a notable slow down.
So who
is our next head coach? Hope it’s not Garrett.
"Stats are like a woman in a fine little bikini. You can see a lot, but you can't see everything." -Dirk A. Tron
Fucking media
Early this year on a goal line stand, Garrett runs pass plays and they bitch about not running the ball.
Well today they run the ball and the cry from Hitzges is ‘You just gotta score… doesn’t matter how you do it’
It's almost always on the players!
That’s what drives me crazy about the fire Wade/Jerry bit. Sure they make mistakes, but the players are the main reason you win and lose games.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

not as much in football
i thought we got outschemed when the cowboys were on D. and there was a scheming problem on the 4th and goal play
I think on one of the runs...
it wouldn’t have been a bad idea to go play action and see if you could get Witten or Roy open for a second considering the Cowboys had run the ball all but one play on the drive. But you’re right. It’s easy to second guess plays once they fail.
That said, I still say that fourth down play was just a miserable call.
