i do find it interesting that chris redman and co are moving the ball so well against the saints d. and last week it was jason campbell.

i really hope our running game gets sorted out soon.

I was listening to morons last night...

…say that the Texans need to draft Colt McCoy.

Bleah.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 12:29 PM CST reply actions

Gross.

Although I feel about McCoy’s NFL future the same way I did about Aaron Rodgers’, and I was completely wrong there. We’ll see. He is pretty accurate.

I just know that I wouldn’t draft him in the first.

Maybe the Texans will move up for Mays if he starts falling or just take Nate Allen. A lot of mocks have them taking a RB.

Houston SportsTalk is awful.

I can’t believe you’re forced to choose between Jim Rome and Colin Cowherd at one point.

1560 has Tim Brando on from 10-1

He’s good. Of course, they follow it with Ken Hoffman, who is an abortion, and who really barely pretends to talk sports…he makes the Hardline sound like a hard-core Xs and Os sports show in comparison.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Okay

I’m finished watching the Texans. There are too many other good games out there.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2009 12:33 PM CST reply actions

I'm a Raider fan

and curious if they’re going to draft somebody like Bradford (who may slide).

Hopefully it’s not my anti-UT bias but I don’t think Colt can play in the NFL but Kiper has him as a Top 20 pick.

Big gamblin’ day for me, all over the Pats, Bengals, Texans and Saints.

I really like Dallas to win today as well.

Don't like Colt

Chad Pennington at best

You could do a lot worse than Chad Pennington.

Yeah

but that’s his best case scenario.

I don't know what to believe about Colt

because there is so much bullshit being espoused by the UT hype machine. He seems like a great kid but the hype kills it for me.

He was terrible against both Oklahoma & Nebraska plus also threw 2 INTs v Tech.

I wonder if Shipley becomes the next Welker.

Colt's a second rounder

His problems are the lack of arm strength and a seeming inability to throw under pressure. He does very poorly when the o-line crumbles… which would not serve him well on a bad team. I could see him being a decent player who bounces around for a while, though, like Jeff Garcia or Pennington.

by Conjunction on Dec 13, 2009 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Colt may be a Rich Gannon-type of QB

who could thrive in a short passing game scheme like the Raiders had with Gruden that was fairly successful earlier this decade.

by knockoutking on Dec 13, 2009 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know what to think about Colt either

The kid just wins.

But his performance sometimes leaves alot to be desired. Is that on him or something else. Numerous times this year opposing defensive players have said how easy it was to know exactly what Texas was going to do just about every single play. There is little to no creativity with Greg Davis and his offense. People say all the time how we “take what the defense gives us” but I call bullshit. A truly good offense can dictate to the defense.

Supposed to be pretty good but I think the Shipley loss is really going to hurt.

Ya gotta understand…nobody was happier than Tech fans to see Vince (best college player I ever saw) go early but then we kept hearing about this kid named Colt that was supposed to be pretty good as well.

I’m hoping that Gilbert is much closer to Chris Simms than somebody like Major Applewhite. Simms had a ton of talent but was a pussy with no heart.

I was watching some of the Heisman

I hate the sport but it’s very good for athletic development at an early age just for the sake of coordination.

I loved having kids who played select soccer on the youth basketball teams I coached because they could run all day and had excellent coordination.

One of Suh’s greatest strengths is his footwork.

YES!

From dominance in one game (4.5 sacks, 7 TFL, 12 tackles) to dominance over a season (basically, per game he was @ 1 sack, 2 TFL’s, 1 pass batted down and 0.25 blocks per game), to the comparisons he’s getting (Sapp, White, Joe Greene), it’s a crime that he finished 4th in Heisman balloting.

Well

Let’s look at the teams that need a QB:

Cleveland
St. Louis
Buffalo
Oakland?
Washington
Seattle?
Denver?
Minnesota?

Of those, 5 will be way too high for McCoy. Now, Seattle and Denver are two to watch because they have 2 1sts, but I feel like they both have enough other areas to address.

I kinda feel that if Minnesota doesn’t have their heart set on McCoy, he slides to the second.

I'm not sure what to think of RedBox and Netflix

redbox is good now

But could be great if they stocked better movies. $1 for a day rental. If you keep it longer its a dollar a day capped at $24. I don’t watch enough movies to do netflix but its a good model also. Blockbuster never adapted to new technology and was slow to see the competition coming

And calling a game over for the home team at 10-3 with 35-40 minutes left to play is, in my opinion, somewhat silly, not least because unpredictable things happen a lot in the NFL.

And of course the Cowboys’ problems are not going to cause the Chargers to have problems. That’s just silly.

wasn’t an issue of play calling. barber just sucked it up

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:14 PM CST reply actions

Yeah it was playcalling

On 4th and 1 you don’t give it to the fullback even if that is Barber. The fullback only has a yard or two of head steam so its harder for that guy to force his way into the endzone.

well

i guess they just need to get a stop the first drive and something good might happen.

But, what are the cowboys supposed to do without a FG kicker?

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions

what do you think the chances of winning are?

I give it somewhere around 20% – which to me is over. I still might watch the bottom of the 9th when we are down by 3 but I’m not holding my breath

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

I don't count a 1 in 5 chance of winning as anything close to "over," first of all,

and I’d give the Cowboys a 1 in 3 chance from here on out. It’s the NFL; freaky things happen.

Like not scoring from the opponents’ 1 and 24 on back-to-back drives.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

the not scoring from the 1 is freaky

from the 24 was not at all. pretty predictable

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

It's the combo that's both disappointing and unusual.

And I mean, looking at things from a league-wide perspective. Ain’t many teams that fail to come up with any points in that situation. Freaky things happen ~ like heretofore cold-eyed-killer kickers losing their shit completely.

i guess i don't understand your point

yes, weird things have happened to the cowboys. but they are also playing like a snake bitten team and their kicker is terrible. nothing that has happened to their offense is all that unexpected.

now, if the chargers all of a sudden just tank, i would find that extremely unexpected. I don’t see how the cowboys so called unexpected events pave the way for the chargers tanking. very rarely does an offense that is so dominant all of a sudden stop working.

I guess our coaches could do a better job of scheming. that’s what we have to look forward to

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

My point's that unpredictable things happen regularly in the NFL.

And calling a game over for the home team at 10-3 with 35-40 minutes left to play is, in my opinion, somewhat silly, not least because unpredictable things happen a lot in the NFL.

And of course the Cowboys’ problems are not going to cause the Chargers to have problems. That’s just silly.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

i realize the mantra of any given sunday

but i just dont’ think it is as variable as you are making it sound, especially after a certain precedent has been set for the game.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

It's not just "any given Sunday."

It’s looking how both teams have played, what their respective talent levels are, and seeing how weird the game’s been so far. The Cowboys haven’t played as badly as 3 points in the first half might indicate, and the Chargers haven’t exactly just destroyed them through the first half.

There’s still an awful lot of football to be played, and a lucky (or “freaky”) break at the right time could put the Cowboys on top.

It’s not over.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know if not scoring from the 1 was freaky.

Garrett ran the same damn play 4 times in a row. They knew it was coming and had it stopped. Yeah, usually it works, but in that case it didn’t. I think he should have tried to run it outside or something, switch it up. Barber wasn’t getting that yard, and you know that’s what’s going to happen with Barber in the game at the goal-line. I can call the play from my couch, the defense can too.

well if you are going to classify it like that

might as well just say “it’s the same – 4 runs”

4th down was Barber from the FB position with a pulling guard going left.

Those are different plays

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

well

I’m assuming you mean ILB.

But in terms of DE, I just don’t think that is the issue. They get decent amount of pressure but our OLB’s just aren’t getting to the QB. And you’re not going to replace our OLB’s, are you? Even if you want to spell them, I think we have a good OLB that we don’t play already

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

For the line

The best solution would probably be to find a true NT and move Ratliff over, but absent that, I feel that Olshansky and Spears are strict run-stoppers. Obviously, in a 3-4, the need for end rushing goes down, but it’s not a position of strength by any means.

As for LB, I leave it open. I feel that James and Brooking for sure can be upgraded, and I like a lot of what Spencer does, but we just have to get more pressure that we have this year.

I’d say my top guys to target would be Rolando McClain, Terrence Cody, Bulaga, and Spikes.

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

That's like saying that if you sign Alex Rodriguez for league minimum. . .

. . . but you spend the rest of the money on crap, it was a bad signing. It’s poor logic.

Romo + an average first round pick is better than Rivers + an average UFA. Whether the latter move in either example is sound doesn’t make the first lesser value.

by philkid3 on Dec 13, 2009 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Football is not baseball.

Certain positions matter much, much more. You can talk about value all you want, but we’re talking about the the elite players in the game.

Would you trade Philip Rivers for a first round pick right now? Your original comment was “I’d rather get Romo as a UFA than spend a first on Rivers”. You have no idea that what Romo was going to turn into, but with Rivers, the odds were better that he would become an elite QB. Romo doesn’t make a rule, he is an exception.

If New England really thought that Brady could become what he is as soon as he did, would they have picked him so late? No, they thought they were picking a backup to an established starter in Bledsoe.

I guess my basic point is, one way of acquiring an elite player is not better than another. You just want to acquire them. Since Rivers is an elite player and Romo goes in and out of elite status, I’d rather have Rivers.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 6:11 PM CST up reply actions

I think I'd rather have Rivers, too.

But I’d rather have Romo and all of my draft picks than Rivers. Easily.

I might trade a first for Rivers for the return we could probably get for Romo, though.

Also, from reading Belichick’s biography, I really don’t agree with you on Brady. Not that they were assured he’d be as good as he became, but I’m fairly ceratin they thought there was a good chance they were grooming the future at QB. Not that this relates in any way to the point.

by philkid3 on Dec 13, 2009 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

You're confusing results with process.

I think the Chargers have a better process, especially when it comes to the draft.

Their biggest blunder of the past 5 years was not trying to get value for Brees via trade. Then again, a guy coming off surgery probably wouldn’t have had as much value. It’s hard to imagine now, but Brees was thought of in a similar way that Matt Schaub is thought of now.

Other than that, what do they do wrong? Maybe not hire the best coaching options, preferring experience (Turner) over promise (Payton, Smith, etc).

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 13, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, I'd definitely rather have a better FO and coaching staff with a better process and better game calling and preparation. . .

. . . and Tony Romo for no draft pick, instead of Phillip Rivers for a first round pick.

Also, I definitely disagreed with the Chargers picking Rivers over Brees and could probably scrounge up some message board threads where you’d find a lot of people who disagree. I don’t know that I thought Brees would be quite this good, but I also didn’t know that Rivers would be this good, either, and thought Brees was closer to a sure thing and already the better QB.

by philkid3 on Dec 13, 2009 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I thought it was odd, too.

But people underrate how good Rivers is because he doesn’t get the attempts that some other players do. He’s really really good.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't say the Cowboys were a better team.

But this was a winnable ballgame.

You could just as easily argue that it was because Cowboys made stupid mistakes that they lost ~ not that the Chargers were doing something right.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:15 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Doesn’t help that we lost Ware either. Helps even less that this bunch of heartless pussies laid down and died after he was carted off. We could have won this ballgame, nobody can convince me otherwise.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

by TXHC on Dec 13, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

no

what mistakes did the D make? they got pushed around and out schemed. There was just now way I could see a cowboys D pulling it out today. There is no accident to the drive that SD put together to end the game

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

20 points, the Chargers scored.

That’s not a great day. That wasn’t a great performance. There was the turnover, and it was a stupid mistake, but then again, that was after the Cowboys failed to punch it in from the 1.

The defense did not play that badly today. Too many 3rd-and-long conversions? Sure. But this was a very good offense they were facing, and they gave up 20 points.

This was a winnable game.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

points aren't everything

they controlled the ball for a really really long time

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

I mean, we're talking 8 seconds difference.

And, fine, you want to dock the Cowboys the last couple minutes? Go ahead. Still nearly even.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

Also? Tomlinson?

21 carries, 50 yards. Chuck out a couple of the short, late carries on the last drive, on you’re still talking 15 for 45, or some such. I know the Chargers are a pass-first, jump-ball team, but it was the big plays that killed the Cowboys, not getting pushed around.

Now out-schemed? That I’ll give you. But I’d have never argued that Cowboys were a better coached or smarter team than the Chargers, ever. Because they aren’t.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

Taking that a bit further:

Can’t score from the 1, three times in a row.
Can’t hit a 42-yard field goal.
Stupid, unnecessary pass interference penalty in 1st quarter.

And, of course, the injury to Ware.

The Cowboys defense held the Chargers to 20 points.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

only because this game had really long drives

the cowboys D rarely stopped the offense. And if they have the same performance against NO they might still “only” give up 24 but they will lose.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

What?!

The Chargers started one drive at their own 44 in the second half and couldn’t score. And, if I recall correctly, had pretty damn good field position a couple other times and couldn’t drive it home.

The defense looked bad at times, but the Chargers have a good offense, and this was not a blowout (as some had predicted).

And Ware going down hurt. You may want to dismiss it, especially during that last drive, but it did hurt.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

look

when we tied the game, they got a 90 yd TD drive right after. And then they put the game away with the 6 minute drive. I don’t think those things are flukey – we still had a chance things. I think you do certain things in the 3rd quarter when you are winning and change up your offensive game plan to put the game away in the 4th.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

I think that's a lot of post-hoc rationalization

to support an argument that this game was over at 10-3 in the 2nd quarter.

I don’t think there was anything inevitable about that 90-yard touchdown drive, any more than I think there was anything inevitable about Ware going down, or a 38-year pass interference penalty, or not punching the ball in three times from the one-yard line.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:33 PM CST up reply actions

a 90 yard TD drive isn't just one play

the 60 yard field goal try isn’t one play. it’s proof that they are just better.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:39 PM CST up reply actions

I never said they weren't better.

In fact, I said the opposite.

I said this was a winnable game. The Cowboys could have won this game, as it was played, despite the Chargers being a better team, because:

(a) the talent gap isn’t that wide; and
(b) the Chargers didn’t play a great game today, either.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

And a freaky play in the 4th quarter

might well have tipped the scales, which was my argument way back at the half…

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

And I never said the drives were one play.

So let’s stick with the arguments I have made, eh?

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

i'm saying that the fact that they weren't one play cuts against it being freaky

i get that a SD fumble or INT could have changed things but they were playing ridiculously disciplined football save the INT.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

Cuts against what being freaky?

I’m not saying the long drives were freaky. I’m saying that, as you yourself point out, one weird bounce, or an unfortunate tip ~ stuff that has much less to do with discipline than with luck ~ in the 4th quarter, and the Cowboys are suddenly in a position to win the ballgame.

Would that have been freaky, rather than a sign of Dallas’ superiority as a team? Yes. Did it happen? Of course not.

But you make it sounds as if the outcome of this game was pre-determined from the outset, or from 10-3 in the second quarter, or at the beginning of the 4th quarter when it was still tied. And I don’t agree at all that that was the case.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

And one more comment, in that vein:

One freaky bounce or tip or whatever does not matter nearly as much to a team that’s getting blown out, because if the team’s down by 14 or 17 or 21 late in the game, there’s still a lot of tough sledding to do to get back on top, and not much time to do it.

But in a tie game in the 4th quarter? Big, big difference.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

there aren't really lucky things like that

you make it sound like there’s a 5% chance of an INT on every play just because the wind affects the ball or some shit. there just isn’t a lot of freaky occurrences and outcomes in the NFL.

whatever this is stupid. fine. there was a 5% chance that some random shit could have happened to give the cowboys the ball one more time. And I still think they would have lost.

stupid argument

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

Why do you keep putting words in my mouth?

Just read what I post ~ don’t try to post for me.

You’re the one who proclaimed this game over, repeatedly, with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter and the Cowboys down 10-3. I get that you want to feel justified about making that assertion, and arguing with people who questioned it, but the fact is, this game was not over then, and it wasn’t even over at the start of the 4th quarter.

by Snark on Dec 13, 2009 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

Well, no, not apparently so.

One game is a ridiculously small sample size.

I agree we could have beaten them, but I’m still pretty sure they’re better.

To be fair, though, DVOA (the closest thing we could probably find to an objective end to the argument) thinks we’re better. It’s got us 9th at 20% better per play than the average team, and it’s got them 13th at 10%. So. . . there’s some support for you.

On America's Game for the '99 Rams

Dick Vermiel talks about how brilliant but crazy Martz is, and how often he’d have to stop Martz from calling what he wanted because it was clearly treating real football like it was a video game. And that correllates well with what we saw in reality: as an OC with Vermiel, the offense was awesome and fundementally sound, once Martz was his own check and balance, he did things like using his time outs to prove he didn’t need them and ignoring the fact that the Patriots were extremely weak against the run and he had one of the greatest RBs who ever lived because he liked passing it (against 7 man defensive backfields at times, btw).

So I guess I might like him as an OC if we had a HC that would keep his crazy in check.

But I also think a poor head coach can win the Super Bowl with some good luck and great talent.

And they didn’t win the Super Bowl because of his play calling in that Super Bowl, which still remains as one of the most egregiously managed sporting events I’ve ever seen.

Everyone can probably remember the game I was talking about. Walking out surrounded by Seahawks fans going psycho down the mob on Pike Street literally probably ranks right behind having my fiance leave me as the worst emotional moment of my life.

I remember some Seahawks fan started grabbing me and crowing about his team and trying to get me to talk shit back to him, and some other Cowboys fan (the stadium was more Dallas fans, btw) came up and punched him and said “YOU DO NOT TOUCH HIM.” Never met the guy.

Maybe, but I think I ruin them.

I let the Cowboys completely dictate my mood in the fall and winter, and they have haven’t given me reasons to be happy for an entire season since I was 10. The Rangers don’t affect me as much, but they still make me a more bitter human than I should be.

And don’t even get me started on Washington State sports, which are worse than the Cowboys could ever be, have less chance of ever being as good as the Cowboys are, and dictate my emotions even more.

The problem here, of course, is not sports; it’s that I’m a head case who should probably stay away.

Yes...

but you know what? All of that means we’ll earn that toast at the bar with our fellow sufferers when our team finally hoists a meaningful trophy. That’s why we go through the heart break. All of those bad Mondays after tough Sundays. All of those sleepless, fitful long nights with the team on the west coast after a walk off win by a division rival. All of the weeks of attention and the months of adoration only rivaled by the animosity and the years of devotion wouldn’t mean ANYTHING if there wasn’t games that left you devastated.

We only know good as a sports fan because we’ve lived the bad.

Here’s to more good than bad for our teams in the near future.

So wrong.

On a per game basis this year in the regular season, he was at 1 sack, 2 TFL, 1 batted down pass, 0.25 blocked kicks.

Big 12 Championship game: 4.5 sacks, 7 TFL’s, 12 tackles.

And he’s a DT!

The end of the article talks about whether he’s more like Warren Sapp, Richard Seymour, or Joe Greene. Those are his comps.

by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 13, 2009 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

I think Taylor Mays is overrated.

He can flatten you, but he’s not the ball-hawk that Berry is and that’s what I think we need back there. Berry reminds me of Ed Reed. No doubt Suh is a monster though. But with Olshansky, Ratliff, and Spears (isn’t he going to be a FA though?) and some pretty good backups it would be really hard for me to pick him over a safety like that. I wouldn’t be mad about either pick, I just think FS is the bigger need.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

by TXHC on Dec 13, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

I think Ratliff will be taking Spears spot next year

by octoberty on Dec 13, 2009 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think Ratliff woudl be as effective from the DE.

The DE’s in this scheme are run stoppers and space eaters. Ratliff is just a freak.

If you did get Suh, seems like it would be best to switch to a 4-3 with Ware, Olshanksy, Ratliff, and Suh all next to each other. Chub.

The bigger picture here is the character of this football team.

It’s easy to point to a few plays as being the cause of a loss. “Gee whiz, if that had just gone right, this is a different ballgame”, etc. But there’s a reason things go right for good teams and wrong for bad teams—it’s in their character. Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. Dallas could write a textbook on finding ways to lose games. They just got their asses handed to them on their own turf in a big December game—something that happens frequently to this team.

So who is to blame? Who sets the tone? It starts with the head coach. If you have a weak head coach, your team is going to be weak. And you can’t point to one little thing they do differently, whether it is shouting more, or whatever you want to pick. It’s an attitude. Good coaches expect their teams to win. Their players start expecting to win.

These Cowboys find ways to lose because they expect bad things to happen. They start playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Cupcake has got to go. He was the wrong choice to begin with, he should have been gone after last season, and he should not be here next year. He’s had three years of very talented teams and has allowed their shortcomings to overcome their assets. Time to move on. Get rid of your problem players like Adams, get a coach that’s proven they can win, and get after it in 2010.

by Athos on Dec 13, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

I get that this is your bit

But it doesn’t make sense. Mike Tomlin said he was going to unleash hell, and they lost 3 more in a row.

by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

It's not a bit.

This was my sport. I’ve played for good coaches and not so good. The locker room changes based on who is setting the tone. Good coaches find ways to win. Players are human beings. As a group, they will perform differently for different leaders. It really is that simple.

by Athos on Dec 13, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

What are you arguing exactly?

That coaches don’t matter? I need to know what your position is here. If you’re just trying to engage in a Socratic devil’s advocate bit, I’ll pass.

by Athos on Dec 13, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'm arguing

That saying a coach is “hard” or “soft” seems like an ex post facto exercise in checking out wins and losses.

by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Hard or soft?

What do you mean “hard or soft”?

Good leadership doesn’t have to be “hard or soft”. Some coaches have it and others don’t. Their ability to lead tends to be reflected in the win/loss column, but that in and of itself isn’t the only thing you should look at.

by Athos on Dec 13, 2009 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

So what are you looking at

To say that Norv Turner was a better hire in 2007 than Wade Phillips?

by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

With the talent this team had coming into 2007, and given Norv’s track record with talented players when he was here under Jimmy, I think he was the better hire. Cupcake’s only real qualification seemed to be that he was going to be the polar opposite of Parcels as far as how he would treat the players.

by Athos on Dec 13, 2009 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

by brettgardner on Dec 13, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

So the coach can only affect the plays called?

You clearly have no concept of what a HC does.

If it was as simple as just setting schemes, that would be one thing. A HC sets the tone for a team from the first offseason workout to the last game of the season. It ain’t just pep talks. It’s expectations. Good coaches find ways to raise their players expectations. A team is reflection of their HC. If he coaches dirty, they’ll play dirty. If he’s disciplined and expects them to be, they’ll be more disciplined. It’s not just a job unless you care nothing about winning. If your HC ignores all other responsibilities but schemes because his players are just employees and ought to know better, then be prepared to root for some really shitty teams.

I'm fairly confident I know what I have with Romo.

And the guards are generally fine. Center was a concern because of snap issues, but they seem to have that worked out. Their poor ability to pick up middle blitzes is frustrating, but no O-line is perfect.

It’s hard to decide on defense. They don’t have many below average players, which adds up to an above average defense. But I’m not sure they have enough playmakers. Maybe Spears (though he’s been better and DE’s don’t make big plays in this system), maybe a general upgrade to the secondary.

But when healthy, there’s no Jacque Reeves, Roy Williams, or Akin Ayodele on this team.

Nearly 1100 posts and I can't tell a difference.

We really don’t need those 400 post GDT stoppages.

Anyway, to go OT.. Dexter finale tonight – anyone been watching? Great season I think.

the preceding post was a great success.

Yeah, my computer is running fine.

I don’t see what the big deal is.

I can.

It’s faster than a 500 post GDT tends to be, I’m assuming because of 1) no gifs and 2) not quite as many people rushing to post at once.

But there is still a notable slow down.

So who

is our next head coach? Hope it’s not Garrett.

Fucking media

Early this year on a goal line stand, Garrett runs pass plays and they bitch about not running the ball.

Well today they run the ball and the cry from Hitzges is ‘You just gotta score… doesn’t matter how you do it’

It's almost always on the players!

That’s what drives me crazy about the fire Wade/Jerry bit. Sure they make mistakes, but the players are the main reason you win and lose games.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

not as much in football

i thought we got outschemed when the cowboys were on D. and there was a scheming problem on the 4th and goal play

I think on one of the runs...

it wouldn’t have been a bad idea to go play action and see if you could get Witten or Roy open for a second considering the Cowboys had run the ball all but one play on the drive. But you’re right. It’s easy to second guess plays once they fail.

That said, I still say that fourth down play was just a miserable call.

that was a bad call

no problem with the run, just type of run.

This thread...

doesn’t have enough posts. I plan on reading them all. Should only take me a couple hours.

so the cowboys need to win 2/3 to make playoffs pretty much now, right?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
