Monday morning Rangers things

Not much out there this morning.

Jeff Wilson writes that the Rangers are still evaluating information on Mike Lowell's thumb, and thus the Lowell/Max Ramirez deal is still in limbo while that is going on.

That's about it.

by clark on Dec 14, 2009 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

I think that goes back to the high floor/high ceiling argument we've been having lately

Lemon isn’t going to be a superstar. But it looks very likely like he could carve out a very nice and long career as a super utility guy possibly even becoming a starter on the right team.

Max looks like hes either going to be a stud who crushes the ball or he’s gonna be Jason Botts v 2.0

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 9:14 AM CST up reply actions

true

but at this point, in my mind, Lemon’s chances of hitting that “super utility guy” peak are at around 60%, whereas Max’s chances of being a true stud are down around 10%.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Dec 14, 2009 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

But Lemons chances of becoming a normal utility guy are probably around 80-85%

Whereas Max’s chances of becoming even a league average DH are only 40-50% IMO.

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 9:22 AM CST up reply actions

see

I guess I don’t agree with that 40-50% range. I just really worry about the contact rate and the low average. He will have to have Cust-like walk rates to make him a viable DH option unless he can tick his contact rate back up to where it was in the lower levels.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

I think the reason Max is down to 10% though

is the health. If he comes back fully healthy, I bet he rakes again

He’s not that good.

He’s not healthy (still recovering from hip problems and now has a bad thumb).

Watched the 30 for 30 ESPN special on the Miami Hurricanes last night and it was really good.

My gosh, I forgot how much I hated that team. Several of those players found themselves in Dallas in the 90s and it’s easy to see why I hated those Cowboy teams so much.

I’m ambivalent on today’s Cowboys and actually like Romo.

A couple things…

Bernie Kosar ain’t right. He’s gained a few lbs, was either drunk or suffered too many concussions as a player.

Dan Lebatard (journalist from Miami and sometime ESPN spare) was interviewed throughout the show. I guess, in an attempt to come of as ….. “street” …afterall, the Canes were a thug team from the ’hood.

He wore a black cap pulled down, had a goatee that wasn’t trimmed and also wore smedium shirt to show off his guns but all he did is show off his gut and that he needs to hit the StairMaster hard.

If Mike Lowell played for the Angels or Ms

would the Rangers still be anxious to do this deal? They’re not a division rival but they should be considered a direct competitor because of the Wild Card. Why are we helping them?

The Red Sox are stuck with this deal and getting somebody to take Lowell off their hands gives them a chance to be better at 3B (and as a team) for the next several years.

They’re anxious to do this so they can make a run at Beltre.

I’d rather stick Boston with Lowell, spend the $ 3 million on somebody else more productive AND see if Max can hit AAA pitching when he’s healthy.

The more I think about this deal, it’s so freaking stupid on the Rangers part.

by Josey Wales on Dec 14, 2009 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

The Red Sox are going to do the deal regardless if its the Rangers or someone else

If they want to get rid of Lowell and eat his salary to do so they will find someone to do it with. On their part they want to get the best possible prospect back. Max has lost alot of luster the last year and a half since moving up from AA to AAA and the majors in 08. The possibility exists that they are getting a guy who could become a really good DH for them for years to come. The possibility also exists that in a few months they will DFA Max because they need the roster spot for someone else, Max is struggling in AAA, and he is out of options at the end of the year.

For the Rangers its not about helping the Red Sox out its about helping yourself out. Lowell probably isn’t the absolute best choice for what we want him for. But the difference in him and a guy like Gomes or Garko in such a small saple size that they will be playing in negated by his veteran presence that this club does so desperately need.

Now if your argument is that Washington may overuse Lowell thus making his performance drop from what it would be used correctly thats fine im not gonna argue against that. But this meme that we are helping the Red Sox out is silly. That shouldn’t be much of a consideration at all when they are not in your division. if we win our division we don’t have to worry about the Wild Card

His time is running out

This is his last option year. So by the time he demonstrates hes healthy in AAA you are looking at a late summer callup at the earliest. Then September against a bunch of other callups. Then you go into next spring having to make a decision and either keep him on your 25 man roster (DH/emergency catcher role) or DFA him.

And if he gets hurt again or is slow to get fully healthy then what do you do? Most likely he gets DFAd midseason.

There is too much all or none thinking here

Not every deal has to be a great steal or a disaster waiting to happen. Sometimes – most of the time – baseball deals are kind of ‘meh’ – they fill a need by sacrificing a bit of talent. Obviously you want to maximize the former and minimize the latter, but it is a zero sum game.

The Lowell deal is/was just one of those deals that the FO thought made sense but wasn’t really meant to be a game changer (for either side). Obviously if he is injured seriously you don’t do the deal. But saying that his thumb saved us all from some debacle that could have been averted is just silly exaggeration. Now we’ll go get some other sub-league average RH bat, and spend a bit more or trade another mediocre prospect.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Dec 14, 2009 9:53 AM CST reply actions

three things

1. obsessing over every minute thing is what we do here
2. add up enough “meh” decisions and you do, indeed have a debacle
3. most of us here have a reflexive reaction to decisions that appear to place “veteran-ness” above effectiveness on the field.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

agh! scary veterans!!!!!!!!!

Well I think this reflexive reaction to any veterans being signed is silly. You surely aren’t seriously buying Adam’s nonsensical comparisons of Lowell to Phil Nevin and Greg Colburnn? Lowell isn’t Brian Jordan (played 66 games the year before we signed him). And I’m still waiting for anyone to show me how this team suffered because Sammy Sosa played on it (or are you still waiting for Jason Botts to come through?)

There is this repulsion to any veteran coming in and taking playing time away from players that deserve it. But when your “players that deserve it” comprise signing such lovely names as are being discussed, I’m thinking the fear is unfounded.

Besides, when Jonny Gomes or Ryan Garko are possible answers, the question is probably being phrased wrong. Those are the same questions that get answered with names like Ben Broussard.

The espn JD chat

“We’re still looking at additional starting help. I’d put it around 50/50 if we add someone to our existing group. Adding a starter could indirectly strengthen our bullpen as it may cause us to leave CJ and/or Neftali in the pen.”

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Dec 14, 2009 10:39 AM CST reply actions

yeah

he echoed those sentiments in an earlier chat or article. I don’t know how likely it is that the starter is someone good. I wonder if it isn’t someone of the astacio variety. I guess that’s a good question for him

by ab03 on Dec 14, 2009 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

I would also guess that if we sign another starter Holland is destined to start in OKC barring a phenominal spring

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think hes as dynamic out of the pen as say Feliz is

And I think he would be the first in line to get a callup if someone gets hurt/inneffective so we will want to keep him ready as a starter instead of having to stretch him out

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

no, you're right - he's not as dynamic

but I think one of Holland, Harrison, CJ will be in the rotation to start the year…and I would bet Holland vs. Harrison; CJ gets the nod if he’s stretched out and they decide to roll with him in the rotation

but I don’t think we’ll just plug Holland into AAA because he’s not starting out the year in the rotation; I think we’ll have our best talent in the pen, and he’s certainly more talented than a lot of the other options

by Anonymous New Guy on Dec 14, 2009 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

I think the fact that they're actually keeping it alive in discussion

leads me to believe that, if things fall perfectly in the bullpen, he definitely will be given a shot at the rotation

Glut at AAA

You guys forget the glut we have at AAA and the upward pressure we are looking at.

Poveda and Beavan and Kiker are definitely ready for AAA, and Ballard and Mendoza will still be there, plus undoubtably Eric Hurley, Josh Rupe, Doug Mathis and Elizardo Ramirez and Moscoso.

At AA, we’ll have Main and Perez and Bleier and Danny Gutierrez and Kirkman and Tim Murphy or the possibility of a double jump for somone like Carlos Pimentel.

Poveda and Beavan should both start in AA

Mathis is going to break camp as the long relief guy. Plus with Main and Hurley, there’s a good chance that they’ll start the season in extended ST before getting a rotation spot in AA/AAA.

Spent a full season in AA and held his own

Has a changeup that is a great pitch. Is on the 40 man roster so while he isn’t at the top of the list for spot/replacement starters he has to be considered.

I don’t see what purpose holding him back would do. he didn’t completely suck in AA or anything

JD:
Lots of Lowell questions, so let me sum the situation up here:As for the trade, nothing is final. As we’ve said it’s something both teams are looking at and the parameters are generally understood. Still some things to work through though, and it’s not a lock to happen. I expect resolution one way or the other fairly soon.If we did acquire Mike, he’d fill several roles for us. He’s DH at times, play 1B at times, and give us a strong option at 3B if Mike Young needed a day or had an injury. Some of the more potent bats available for the DH spot are attractive too, but we really wanted to maintain roster flexibility and have our DH be able to play defense when needed. Depth and interchangeable parts are so important over the course of 162… He also brings an element of experience that can only help.
