Gammons: Mike Lowell may need thumb surgery
If so, this would presumably throw a wrench in the potential trade.

not because
the Rangers wouldn’t want him, but because Tom Hicks couldn’t afford to foot the bill for the surgery…

exactly.
if he can’t play, but his intangibles are so great, make him the manager… otherwise, we can find another bat.

Has more to do with hanging on to Max Ramirez than it does with Garko’s expected performance minus Lowell’s.

I cant really see a solution out of all of this that I like anymore
Really I’d like a combo of Lowell and Cust which would cover the full DH duty and backing up the corners, but that obviously costs double the money and roster space + maxram.
the preceding post was a great success.
plus lowell would probably make waves about such a small role.
so uh.. yeah i don’t know anymore.
Garko is such a limited player.
the preceding post was a great success.
Neither is Mike Lowell.
I failed my LSB ethics test.
"WHAT A SHITLOAD OF FUCK" - LL's "Poochie" on Rich Harden signing with Texas over Seattle
or Cantu
although he would cost more in terms of $$ and trade pieces, cantu would definately be more desirable due to his versatility in the field
Lackey
Taking a physical in Boston. I hope he signs and gets his ass out of the AL West. Even if the Rangers have generally had success against him, a whole lot of other teams haven’t. I’d be happy to see him steal a few from the yankees and rays.
baseBALLIN!
by the way, does this put buckholz on the trading block?
He had a pretty good year last year with a 4.21 ERA and .256 BA. With his stock down, and apparently with the Red Sox needing a middle of the order bat, would a Cruz for Buckholz swap be favorable? Maybe we’re giving up too much for Buckholz.
baseBALLIN!
cruz for buccholz
and we’re giving up too much, huh?
i guess the real issue is that we don’t have a lot of offense to give up. we just aren’t a match
Nothing too ridiculous
someone like Bowden would be fine
"The pitcher has got only a ball. I've got a bat. So the percentage of weapons is in my favor..." Hank Aaron
1st question: Probably not.
2nd question: no way Boston swaps Buchholz (2 H’s, people) for Cruz.

I don't really like seeing him in boston, but yeah better than LAA.
the preceding post was a great success.
Assume the front office still wants Lowell. His price has just gone down.
Do you request the Sox to pick up even more $ or substitute someone for MaxRam? If so, who?
Stated another way is MaxRam worth $1mm, $2mm, $3mm?

Man, this'd be pretty rad.
This deal never made a lot of sense for us, imo.
Get Garko or Gomes and maybe a left platoon partner for ‘em like a Delgado or a Thome and I have to imagine we’d get better production for less money, plus we’d get to keep Max.
But I can just see Ron Washington now: “Oh, won’t somebody please think of the veteraniness factor!!”

So from JD's chat
It seems like one of the reasons they like Lowell is the ability to play 3rd….
The non-tender guys we’ve been discussing aren’t really 3B options — that has to be a major factor in their decision for Lowell, especially considering there’s no good option in the minors.
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
I didn't get that feeling
JD said he could play 3B if Young needed a day or got injured. Based on Young history I don’t see him needing more than half a dozen “days” throughout the season. And since last year was the first real injury of his career I don’t know how much probability that has of happening again.

uhhh, I don't think so

He might not be much with glive at SS, but he'd look god damn veteran-y as hell standing out there.

Ahh, now I see what you were getting at
missed it at first, and I don’t think they would construct a roster without a legit backup SS, but maybe you are right.
Ranger fans say "NO! NO!" to Go Go.
Keep Reinsdorf's chub from ruining my club.
Yeah, I'm just going by what we have now
If Lowell were a Ranger, maybe Young and whoever ends up being the util infielder can split Elvis’ days off at SS, while Young would be the guy if it were going to be more than a 1 game thing.
Well I'm sort of getting that feeling
since they agreed to this trade “in principle” at least before all the non-tender guys were available. They had to have a pretty good idea that guys like Garko and Gomes would be available — but the fact that they waited makes it seem like they value the 3B ability. That or the veterenyness.

The fact that he can play 3rd base
is obviously one of the reasons JD likes him.

Did you forget how he played through those finger injuries in 08
Lowell gives the team an option at 3B so that if Young is hurt, he doesn’t need to play through the pain and not be able to get healthy for the rest of the season. If everything goes right, Lowell wouldn’t get more than a few games at 3B all season, but you have to prepare Young missing at least a short period of time. And I wouldn’t really like to explore our internal 3B options as fill ins if Young get hurts.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

backup 3b
I think we’d be ok if we had to put Davis at third for a few games next year.
Ranger fans say "NO! NO!" to Go Go.
Keep Reinsdorf's chub from ruining my club.
I'm not a fan of Davis at third
Its doable, but not something I’d like to see. That also comes with some other inherent problems, like who plays 1B and what if Davis doesn’t hit again next season. If Smoak isn’t ready, you’re going to kill your IF defense with Davis at 3B and someone like Garko or Thome at 1st. Lowell lets you have a single replacement to fill in for Young and less is more in this case.

"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Lowell is a nice backup if Young gets hurt
But I don’t think if we sign Lowell that Young will all of a sudden start sitting 20-30 games a year or DHing those days. He will get his normal 5-8 days off a year barring injury. if he does get injured then Lowell will step in which is a upgrade over our internal candidates for sure
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
So...
you agree with Dirk’s original post then?
by Anonymous New Guy on Dec 14, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions
To a degree
But over the last few days people have thrown out when talking about our backups that they will need to play 3B and some have thrown out 15-20 as the number of games thinking Young would be sat or DHed that often. I just don’t see that happening. Lowell being able to play 3B is a plus but shouldn’t be the reason we sign him because the likelihood of him playing there enough to make a difference is slim to none. if we don’t sign Lowell and go with Garko or Gomes I am fine with Inglett or German at 3B the handful of times throughout the season we most likely will need. Now if Young gets hurt then thats another story
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
The whole point of my post originally
was that I think the Rangers are going after Lowell BECAUSE they are more concerned about a legit backup 3B — apparently more than you are.

My response wasn't directed totally at you
More to the people who believe for some reason that Young is all of a sudden going to sit or DH 20 times next year simply because we sign Lowell. He will be the emergency 3B and start there the handful of times Young does get a day off. And if Young gets injured he is the guy we turn to. But if Young doesn’t get injured (which is very very likely) I doubt Lowell plays more than a dozen games at 3B. Something I personally think Inglett or German could do if needed.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
yeah that's exactly what I said earlier

think we might be in on Garrett Atkins.

yeah he's the only other 3B option that was non-tendered
That sort of scares me. I think I’d rather do the Lowell deal than go after Atkins.

There are
a certain number of teams that I think all of us as Angels fans wouldn’t blame a player when they hit FA leaving for… but in the same respect there are a handful of teams that we all won’t forgive players for going to.
If Lackey signs with the Clevland Indians or NY Mets, or The Balt Orioles, when he would play the Angels he would get a standing ovation.
Just like Figgins will the first time he plays here, even though he went to a division rival.
But Boston, the Yankees, or Texas
He will be booed and deservedly so
My prediction as of 12-11-2009- Wood .265 avg, 20 HRs 70 RBIs and an above average glove at 3b
