Lee to M's; Halladay to Phillies

2:56pm: Heyman tweets that a three-way deal has been agreed to with Halladay going to the Phillies and Lee to the Mariners.  The Phillies are now trying to sign Halladay to an extensin.

Star-divide

Felix and Lee make a nice 1-2 punch for the M's.

If not for our ownership clusterfuck, we might have been the leading contenders for Halladay.

The Phillies are in agreement on a three-team trade with the Mariners and Blue Jays to acquire star pitcher Roy Halladay, SI.com has learned.

Sources say Halladay will agree to a contract extension to complete the deal.

It’s likely Cliff Lee would wind up with the Mariners in the deal.

Also realize that their year involved

Washburn performing like he never had before and Bedard actually logging around 100 very good innings. I’m not sure that this doesn’t basically even out the pitching they have already lost this off season more then adding more to it.

I am not arguing that either Washburn or Bedard is better than Lee, just that 216 innings of 2.7 ERA baseball is probably about what you would predict for Lee, if not better than what you would predict for Lee.

What do voluntary mean?

nah

The M’s are buying high on Figgins, who is only a marginal improvment over Beltre, and Lee, who they will be paying a lot for.

The 2009 Seattle Mariners gave up a league best 692 runs last season

Without knowing who the Mariners gave up, its tough to say how good/bad this deal is, but looking at their roster, this move doesn’t help them improve much over last season. It will help them prevent some regression, but as long as they gave up some of their top prospects to make this happen, I like this deal as a Rangers fan.

Heyman article on si.com
The Phillies are in agreement on a three-team trade with the Mariners and Blue Jays to acquire star pitcher Roy Halladay, SI.com has learned.

Sources say Halladay will agree to a contract extension to complete the deal. It’s expected to be a formality.

The Phillies have discussed Cliff Lee in trades, but it isn’t confirmed who the Mariners would be receiving in this deal.

by NothinG on Dec 14, 2009 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Whats the success rate on late 1st round picks?

Under 75%?
Under 50%?
Under 25%?

And 3 years is a very short time span for most later picks to reach the majors. I wouldn’t worry about this year being a total restock of the system for the Halos and that we have a tiny window because of it.

1st rounders succeed at an exponentially higher rate

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

by NothinG on Dec 14, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Yes they are better picks

and they hit more frequently. That doesn’t mean that late 1st round picks are good bets to produce MLB average players in a short time scale. If they had 10 picks inside the top 10 the last 2 years then I would be suitably scared at this point.

If out of those 10 first round and supplimental picks they get 2 average and one good player they have probably come close to the right trend.

If things break right there’s reason to expect that we will have an equal to greater haul from our picks this year than the Halos do.

is that I don’t think that much of the Mariners’ top prospects. Seems like everyone is overreacting a bit, though. Look at Washburn did for Seattle last year and where it got them.

by NothinG on Dec 14, 2009 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

but its all about stats. Washburn/Bedard last year provided equal to or better in ERA then you can expect Lee to do this year with a similar number of innings. They likely get the ability to pencil those numbers in as opposed to praying that they get that again from the combo, but does that mean that they have a huge improvement over last year, or that they are basically paying to try and make sure they don’t slide backwards a lot.

What do voluntary mean?

I always wonder

about these “special case” teams like Seattle and San Diego and San Fran whose ballparks are heavily biased towards pitching. Does it still make sense for them to invest heavily in better pitching than other teams? I can see investing heavily in speed and defense, which are big pluses in ballparks that play big.

That is very debatalbe

considering Young just had his career year with the bat, and Elvis should be an improving SS.

I’d probably say Elvis was more important to the team last year than Young, because what kept us in the running so long was the defense and Elvis was the biggest part of that improvement.

half a win last year.

not worth 2 years 6 million. Thats the difference between them. If you perfer other numbers how about 16 points of OBA.

They were both poor players last year. If you are going to keep a poor player you might as well keep the cheaper one with upside.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Dec 14, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

He definitely was not worth that contract

Im not arguing we should have signed him. I’m merely arguing that I would rather have Pudge than not have him. I would rather have Byrd than not have him. Our team is worse without those two. thats my only point.

by nathanbaum09 on Dec 14, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

If you take all cost factors away

then you can make any statement. And I’m not sure I would bet on Pudge to be better than Teagarden next year. Honestly, they really are pretty much equivalent players last year, just that Pudge got more ABs because he was Pudge Rodriguez.

If we aren't its because

of Byrd mostly. And I wouldn’t be surprised if 2010 Byrd is less then 2009 Byrd.

I just don’t see us as having lost anything irreplacable, and we have added someone that has the potential to be more valuable then everything we lost.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Dec 14, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm...

so are you willing to give Byrd the contract he’s looking for, or the contract Pudge got? If a team really becomes much worse by losing those two “cornerstones”, well it doesn’t really matter because that team is terrible to begin with

your not replacing millwood with harrrision

your replacing millwood with a combo, in theory, of harden + harrison (btw, harden @ 100 innings @ 120 era+ and harrison @ 100 innings @ his career era+ of 79 = near millwood’s career era+ of 105 in texas)

This is where consistency matters

You may win an extra game or two replacing Millwood with Harden but when you replace Millwood with Harrison you lose as much if not more. Its a push at best while upgrading the #1 slot.

Only if Harden stays healthy for most if not all of a season does this improve the team which I don’t think you can count on him doing.

His ERA looked shiny this year, but he really wasn’t good. I expect about 175 IPs next year with about a 4.90 FIP and a 5.20 tRA. The Rangers won’t miss Millwood.

Last time I checked tRA and FIP didn't go on the scoreboard

Earned runs do which makes ERA somewhat relevant.

Seattle has to replace Bedard and Washburns sub 3 ERA regardless of what their FIPs were. Actual performance sometimes trumps expectant stats

no its not a bit

I get it. All these stats say Millwood was horrible last year. Yet there is one that says he was pretty decent which most just dismiss. FIP and tRA are expectant stats. They don’t actually tell you what happened. ERA does. ERA tells you how many earned runs scored. FIP tells you how many should have scored. Same as tRA. Until expectant stats start determining who wins and loses ERA is going to hold some water in my eyes. So when we are talking about replacing Millwoods 2009 I don’t care what his FIP and tRA are. Thats not what we have to replace. We have to replace his ERA which I don’t see how Harrison, Hurley, Holland, Feliz, McCarthy, etc can do.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 14, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

Can't you see how stupid you're being?
They don’t actually tell you what happened

Uh, yeah, they do. They tell you how well he actuallyed pitched, which is more useful than just counting earned runs he was charged with.

ERA tells you how many earned runs scored. FIP tells you how many should have scored. Same as tRA.

Fucking exactly! And when the FIP and tRA tell you a lot more runs should have scored than actually did, it means MORE RUNS ARE GOING TO SCORE IN THE FUTURE.

You know who wasn’t going to replace Kevin Millwood’s 2009 ERA? Kevin Millwood. He can’t rationally be expected to duplicate his 2009 ERA next year, no matter how much you want to masturbate over it. And that’s the whole point that seems to go sailing over your head.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

"WHAT A SHITLOAD OF FUCK" - LL's "Poochie" on Rich Harden signing with Texas over Seattle

by LSJ on Dec 14, 2009 8:26 PM CST up reply actions

Actually ERA tells you the results of how he pitched

the difference between his ERA and FIP, xFIP and tRA tell you how possible that is to being repeated in the future.

Millwod would never replicate last year numbers. The thing is that who ever you bring in has to replicate those number of earned or unearned runs in IP not Millwoods FIP, xFIP of tRA.

Harden should reduce the variability that the team can replicate last years overall numbers in the amount of runs given up. That does not mean that the staff improved from last year. It means that this coming year should be more likely to replicate teh overall numbers of last year than it would have been with Millwood on the roster.

Well, I don't see how that means you didn't improve the 2010 staff

Since Millwood wasn’t going to replicate is 2009 numbers, replacing him with someone who can help the team replicate last year’s RA numbers would seem to be an improvement to me.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

"WHAT A SHITLOAD OF FUCK" - LL's "Poochie" on Rich Harden signing with Texas over Seattle

by LSJ on Dec 14, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Will the staff be better overall than last year?

Most likely. Not by a huge margin, but they should be just do the age progression.

With Millwood they certainly would have been worse than last year just due to the huge likelihood that he would not have the same luck component as last year. That does not mean that the staff output is actually “better” that last years. All it means is that the projected output has much less variability..

All the addition of Harden does is give you a much better chance of getting the same overall output that Millwood provided last year. You cannot erase Millwood performance from last year. It was actually a pretty nice season, even if it was all smoke and mirrors. Harden makes it much more likely that the team as a whole can provide the same amount of run prevention that a staff with Millwood provided last year.

Adding Harden to the staff now makes it more likely that the team will be able to replicate last years results, not make it more likely they will improve upon them.

Just because I don't take advances stats as gospel doesn't mean im being stupid
Uh, yeah, they do

Uh, no they don’t. Tell me hwo many runs did Millwood allow last year per 9 innings? His FIP or his ERA? Not how many he should have allowed but how many he actually did allow.

Could Millwood duplicate 2009….not likely. But on the field and on the scoreboard we don’t have to replace his FIP or tRA. We have to replace his ERA.

I fully understand all these advanced stats you throw around but I don’t strictly go off of them. When you are talking about replacing someones performance from the previous year you don’t have to replace what they should have done you have to replace what they actually did. Thats the point you fail to realize. Harden should be about equal if not slightly better than Millwood in actual performance. he is going to be tons better in FIP and tRA and such. But my point is once Harden goes down and you have to replace him with harrison or Hurley or whoever they aren’t going to give you what he did on the field. they aren’t going to give you what Millwood gave you on the field. The maybe should give you it but until they translate that should to actually do then its a loss.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I think you have a point

…but Millwood wasn’t going to replace himself, just as you said. In fact after watching his second half he could very easily go from a league-average type guy to just a plain old bad pitcher. He looked awful by the end of the year.

I wish they had someone who was a sure bet to pitch a bunch of average innings or a little better, but they’re broke. What can you do? Maybe the kid’s will come through. If they do the Rangers got a lot better. If they don’t, they’re in for a serious regression.

by Black Francis on Dec 15, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with everything in this post...

but as Black Francis said, Millwood wasn’t going to do what Millwood did this year either.

Why are they trading Lee and prospects to get Halladay? Is he really that much of an upgrade over what Lee gave them last year?

Seems like the sensible thing to do would have been to acquire Halladay without giving up Lee, especially if they’re already including their top prospect in the trade, as has been rumored.

isn’t a lot to give up for one year of Cliff Lee? I would be pissed if we did that, I think…

Have to see what the options are on it

I doubt he could have gotten 8/160. That would have him signed through age 41. 3/60 signs him through age 35 and a couple option years should be just right.

Doubtful

At least the annual salary. he’s not young enough to get a CC deal and he’s getting this guaranteed now. He’s one injury away from seeing that turn from 20 million/year to a 1 year incentive laden deal. Given some good options and incentives in this deal, I can see how it makes more sense than waiting a year..

ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark has heard from sources that catching prospect Travis D’Arnaud is also headed to Toronto in Monday’s three-team blockbuster.
Here’s what we’ve learned so far: The Phillies will get Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays and will hand him a three-year, $60 million contract extension; The Blue Jays, in turn, will get D’Arnaud and outfielder Michael Taylor from the Phillies, and pitching prospect Phillippe Aumont from the Mariners; Seattle will get Cliff Lee from the Phils. This thing might not get sorted out until Tuesday or Wednesday, but we’ll be sure to keep up with the details as they stream in. Stay tuned

Is he any good?

per ESPN
According to a source who spoke with two teams involved in the trade, Toronto would get highly regarded Mariners pitching prospect Phillippe Aumont, Phillies catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud and another Phillies prospect in exchange for Halladay. Indications are that the Phillies have balked at Toronto’s repeated requests for outfielder Domonic Brown, and the Phillies are offering highly touted outfielder Michael Taylor instead.

Seattle would send two additional prospects to Philadelphia in exchange for Lee, who is a year away from free agency

so aumont, saunders, gillis/ramirez?

The Astros have inked Dominican pitching prospect Edgar Ferreira, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

GM Ed Wade confirmed the signing to McTaggart, which is “rumored” to have a signing bonus of $350K. The 17-year-old has a fastball that sits in the low-90s but can touch 94 on occasion.

all wade heard was “can touch 94” and his first thought was: we HAVE to sign this guy. he would fit in our bullpen" and offered 4 mil/year over 3 years, but was overruled by the local scout

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

The Angels now appear to be among the favorites to acquire Derek Lowe. They could offer outfielder Juan Rivera, who is the type of right-handed run producer that Atlanta is seeking.

This is a much better deal...

for the M’s than Bedard was, but I’m not sure if I’m against it or not. Lee has been very up and down in his career. He can be great or could have another year like the ‘07 season. Plus this is strickly a one year rental. Lee won’t sign an extension there.

Hopefully the M’s had to include both Morrow and Aumont.

by slc ranger on Dec 14, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

still not too scared about the M's

As good as Lee is, he’s been absolutely shelled at RBIA and I don’t see Seattle being able to keep both him and King Felix past this year. Plus, they’re going to be banking on Ian Snell, Rowland-Smith, and French to cover up the 3-5 spots and their offense still isnt that good.
The Angels are what they are. A very old team whos starting rotation has been exposed with Lackey gone. Bye Bye Halos
If you ask me, from 2011 on, the team we’re going to need to worry about is the A’s. If Beane can keep that team together, they have the talent to match up with us for years.

For them...

it was all about locking up a guy like Halladay or Lee long-term. Lee wouldn’t workout a contract extension and Halladay would. So there you go.

They’re both good, but I’d definitely give the edge to Halladay. It would be pretty nice to know that you have that guy at the head of your rotation for the next 4 years. I can see where it makes sense for them.
