Maury Brown on the Rangers sale
Maury Brown, who is pretty much the go-to guy in terms of the business side of sports (and who we had a Q&A with about the Rangers sale back in late September), has a good piece up on the pending Rangers sale.
Brown takes a look at each of the three finalists, and has some interesting info, including indicating that Jim Crane supposedly has the highest bid right now, and predicting that the final sales price will be $530 million, which is higher than I think most folks thought it would be six months ago.
Anyway, a good piece...check it out...

I did not know that. Or think that people thought that.
I’m sorry for not reading something I have little interest in. I don’t see how that makes me dumb. But maybe that’s why I’m dumb? heh… or maybe you’re just insane?

If you have little interest in it, why in the world did you bother to post on the thread?

seems to me
that by “ginning up” the process here, this may be his way of getting back in the good graces of MLB. He won’t win the Rangers, but if he an interest in another club down the road then they’d let him play on a level ground.

I will repeat what I said the other night, but here....
Crane- Wont get approved, is "un-ethical"
Gilbert- As per latest reports, doesnt even have his funds in order and thus his financing is not in place to buy the team… We havent heard any thoughts to the contrary…
Chuck- I would make a hypothesis that Chuck is one of the lower bidders, as he hasn’t jumped to the front of the line in terms of bidders, even though it has been confirmed that his group involves primarily local investors, which is different than the other two, and that he has Ryan as an investor and will keep him as President of the organization, thus implying that the rest of the front office will stay intact.
I think if he had a high bid, or the highest, then it would be a no brain-er… He has even offered to let Hicks be a part of his investor package, which is a goal for Hicks.
So, Chuck must only be offering something in the nature of $500-510 mill, where I bet Gilbert is boasting the highest supposed total, even though his investors aren’t all in line.

Backing out of a deal doesn't necessarily make you unethical

Nope
But it sure does mean your word is rather doo-doo.

Really?
You agree to buy something, do your due diligence and find out that things aren’t what you had been told, and backing out of that deal makes your word doo-doo?
by Darrell McKown on Dec 14, 2009 9:12 PM CST up reply actions
Pretty different
A retail or real estate transaction doesn’t require the consumer to really have anything invested in his word. He just has to pay up. Certain professions operate on trust because of the frequency of transactions with the same people.

The word is they had a handshake deal
You said the key words yourself. You agree to buy something. I’ve read nothing to indicate that Crane discovered evidence of bamboozlement.
Maybe he did. If so, I’d think he would be singing that song from the highest rafters. Wouldn’t you?
What sounds much more likely is that he got a bad case of the ol juevitos, and figured when it comes down to a call between his word and his fortune, Mrs. Crane told him to take a page out of Marcellus Wallace’s book:

Thus, why I
put “unethical” in quotations… I didnt say it, but that is the jist of why everyone is saying he wont get approved, because he backhanded MLB by saying yes, then backing out, which in many circles, including owners, would be seen as unethical.

Saw that
Evidently the difference between death kneel and death knell is who is holding the sword. Also, chuckled at ‘principle’ owner in lieu of principal owner. No wonder I have no principles, that dude owns them! All taken, good article though.

I'm definitely going to try to work "death kneel" into posts when I can.
The article was terribly written. Tons of style problems, grammatical errors, and just-plain typos. But somewhat informative…
Ed,
Did you and I get into it one time about what a “death knell” was? I had no idea what it meant and a couple of people called me a moron. Ha. I still don’t really know, I guess it has something to do with a sharp object ending someone’s life force?

Crane and high bids
I’m having trouble understanding one thing.
How does MLB take a lower total bid (assuming Crane is the high bid but unwanted by MLB for the reasons we’ve all heard) if the team doesn’t sell for the debt Hicks has placed on the team?
How does MLB turn to the banks that have extended those loans and tell them “sorry we didn’t cover the last $20M of your loans because we didn’t want Crane to be a part of our club”?
well the team isn't being auctioned
the HSG isn’t in bankruptcy
Not in there control
if the sale price is high enough, which is above $500million which was supposedly seligs goal, then we are looking for the best option for the team…

That's a good question
If the team is collateral on the debts, then the banks should have the ability to veto any deal. They can’t necessarily pick the winner, but if they aren’t being made whole, they shouldn’t have to release their collateral.
They could take unsecured debt from HSG (unlikely, I would think) or new secured debt of the team, I assume, but I would think they would have to sign-off on that structure.
by Darrell McKown on Dec 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions
Wouldn't the Stars
also have to be part of the collateral?
I mean, they aren’t buying out all of HSG… just an asset of it. HSG would still be able to carry debt.
He also claimed Staubach is part of Greenberg's consortium
That isn’t right, is it?
I thought the Dodger was only part of the whole “rob Peter-to-pay-Paul-i’m-selling-the-team-to-my-magnanimous-self” Hicks shennanigans.
Neftali Feliz says sit your 5 dollar ass down before he makes change...
Hi, Keith. Is this the year Edinson Volquez finally wins RoY?
I haven't been keeping up with this, but....
It seems that we should be rooting for Greenberg to win this. I like that Ryan will remain in his spot. I really don’t like that Hicks will still be involved, but it seems in a very limited role.
I want no part of Gilbert if he wants to run baseball operations….we already have multiple owners in town that are way too involved…..this could turn into Hicks Jr.
Crane I am not sure about. I hear about the back-out with the Astros, but that was so long ago that I don’t have a problem with it
by death of the cool on Dec 14, 2009 9:12 PM CST reply actions
I'm fine with Crane.
I think he’s the richest. Greenberg’s fine too, but Gilbert’s ego has started to worry me. JD’s got a good thing going here with the scouting dept/farm system. I dont want to see us signing everyone and trading our prospects for pipe dreams.
What in the hell is Hicks looking for as his end game?
It’s obvious MLB won’t approve any deal with Hicks maintaining sole control of the team, he doesn’t have the money to pay off his debts thus he has no choice but to sell the team here, yet he’s acting like it’s business as usual.
Greenberg/Ryan are giving him the only possibility to save face in this mess and he’s stalling? Really??
No wonder the team went down the crapper after ’99.
My question is...
Isn"t some of the monies owed to the bank coming from the Stars, and if so does the MLB have to cover that in the sale of the Rangers. I would think not, so they only have to cover the Rangers portion which could be considerably less than what has been stated the HSG owes.
What kind of conflict would NHL owners have with a particular candidate?
Not sure how that works.
"BIg whoop, wanna fight about it?"
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
It's all about the benjamins
I think there’s a broader question here though touched on by sftxfan. If HSG is in default on these loans, why aren’t the Stars up for sale too? It obviously affects them enough if the NHL has to approve this deal too.
If you're in default on a loan, you don't have to sell all your assets to fix the situation (barring the bank forcing you to liquidate)
You just sell enough assets to get the funds to right the ship on your debts and keep trucking right along with the remainder of your assets.
Simplified example: if you default on your car loan and your bank calls it, they’re not going to foreclose on your house and your other car loan too, just to satisfy the one default.

What a mess
We all know how stubborn Tom Hicks is, but this is ridiculous. How can anyone not throw in the towel here?
Hicks' towel is the only thing covering HSG's nether regions at the moment.
And HSG is too broke to buy another towel.

So what ya'll are saying
is that the Stars and Rangers are in one big loan, spread out through several banks, through HSG. And that HSG is default on these loans, so Hicks must sell the Rangers to cover the defualt and in doing so would pay off his Stars loans also right?
pretty much
