OK lets see how many time I have to vote Beltre
Can’t really understand the Beavan love here.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
It's
probably C-Wun voting for himself.

Tools, age and ceiling.
I’m really interested to see how he responds to his first truly disappointing performance.
The probability that he’ll never amount to anything is very high, but so is the potential payoff if he can manage to work even a little bit of discipline into his approach at the plate.
High risk, high reward.

I voted Beltre
But 20 year olds in AA are going to be considered soemthing at least halfway decent no matter what. When you add in Beavan’s amazing control and yes, his original pre-draft hype, I don’t see why people want to throw away the results. This is number 12 and this right around where I would think Beavan should be in the rankings.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

He was drafted 2 years ago.
Had to have his mechanics re-worked after which his FB velocity (his strongest point) dipped and his K rate dropped dramatically.
I guess there’s always hope for his ceiling, but there’s guys there with higher ceilings or who are closer.

He's a much different animal than the guy we all thought we were getting when we drafted him.
His K rate is troubling, as is the drop in velocity that came from his reworked mechanics, but it’s not like he’s without hope or anything.
The guy had a 4.01 ERA and a 3.49 FIP in AA as a 20 year old and his 1.30 BB/9 is remarkable. Plus he’s proven to be pretty much impossible to take deep.
He’s never going to be the swaggering ace we thought he had the potential to be, but he still has a pretty darn good chance to be a LAIE or maybe even a Derek Lowe.

I have a feeling BA, et al will be doing that sort of thing when they compose the Rangers’ extended lists. There just isn’t a lot separating several guys in this area.

That is the only thing that I can come up with. He was a first round pick from the area that caused a stir when he said he could pitch for the Rangers out of HS.
He isn’t in my top 15…and maybe not the top 20.

I would put those and possibly Beltre above him too
so theres 9
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Yeah, that's about right.
I would probably put Beltre in there, too, like NothinG mentions. Guess that does put him at #21 for me, though I actually said “maybe not in my top 20”.
Looking at it a little more closely, he could easily fall anywhere between 18 and 21 for me.

Poveda???
Poveda’s a year older, doesn’t have the control that Beavan has, and still comes with the K concerns. I’m also not able to jump onto that Wieland bandwagon like some. Solid peripherals last season, but nothing outstanding and this system has higher ceiling guys (of a similar or younger age) who are just as “proven” as he is in pro ball if not more. Moscoso looks to be a solid RP, but I can’t get that excited about a 26 year old who likely will be nothing more than a RP.
Snyder??? I can’t see a LOOGY being more valuable than anything. Strop is a much, much better RP prospect, but he’s got a huge injury concern and I’m not voting for any strictly RP prospect at this point.
I can understand the argument with Telis, Velazquez, Max, and Beltre (I know you didn’t put him there), but some of you people are way too down on Beavan to the point where they are looking for absolutely anyone to vote in over him.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

Poveda was also pitching in AAA
a year older, so I don’t see the issue. 21 vs 20. Poveda was better.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Poveda was in AA...
Omar Poveda pitched one game Triple-A in 2009. I’ve been voting Blake Beavan recently, although, in response to Gdawg’s statement about Poveda’s “K concerns,” it’s worth noting that Beavan only had 34 strikeouts in 89.2 innings in Double-A. Overall, in 2009, Beavan had 85 strikeouts in 163 innings.

I'm not saying that Beavan is a much better K pitcher
but that same concern should be right there with Poveda
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Poveda has been a K pitcher in the past
It dropped last year but before that he was a K an inning guy
Beavan has never sniffed Povedas K rates
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Poveda has better
pure stuff by a pretty good margin. Up until this season he was just about a K per IP guy. Average FB/CB combo to go with a plus changeup.
I'm really not down on Beavan...
as much as I’m high on the rest of the system. I believe AJM said that so many of these guys are so close together that in the 10-25/30 range a lot of them are very interchangeable. I don’t think there’s a big difference between #10 and #20 especially. This system is just so fucking deep that you will get differing opinions like this. It’s really not a big deal, and usually doesn’t mean that many of us are “down” on any one individual prospect.

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
Replace Snyder with Beltre...
and I think all those guys are ahead of Beavan for me as well.

I think some
Are hoping beyond hope that he somehow regains his velocity. If he does, with the kind of control he’s displayed, Beavan could be a tremendous prospect.

It's not just velo
his slider was really bad last year

Honestly
with how deep this system a prospect like Beavan can flame out and it wouldnt kill us. Why not just tell Beavan to go back to his old mechanics? See if he recovers his velocity…
I voted for beavan here bc despite the velocity issues I still think he could become a serviceable 4/5 guy in the rotation.

I wouldn't doubt that they let Beavan do that
I think they’d look to trade him first as changing his mechanics back is more of a last resort, could kill his trade value, and possibly waste a 40 man roster spot while he fixes his mechanics (assuming that would happen next year at the earliest).
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Because he's actually got a chance to be pretty good with his current profile?
That’d be reason anyway.
He induces tons of groundballs, keeps the ball in the yard with remarkable consistency and never walks a freaking person. Seriously, the dude hates walks. I think maybe he’s racist against them.
Plus, like I said above, he was only 20 in AA.

exactly...
his change has improved, but his slider was pretty much lacking any downward break, making it an 80 mph cutter that doesn’t cut that much and starts breaking immediately out of his hand. Basically a 40 pitch…
Haven't we been waiting for him to regain his velo since he was drafted?
Wonder what the freaking deal is!?!?

Gutierrez sounds super peachy in all the reports I’ve had the chance to pour over, but I’m still a little suspicious given what we paid to get him.
I know he’d had problems in KC and they wanted to be rid of each other, but Smith/Pina seems like an awful small price to pay for a guy who’s as good as we keep hearing.

But it was the Royals we got him from...
But, yeah, we should hold off a bit, but he comes out this season firing, I’ll have no problem scooting him up into the top 5 with his stuff/projection. I want to see Font make it to Frisco this year, if he can do that, the sky is the limit.
So I'm clear...
A lot of people, it seems, would rather see Engel Beltre go to Boston in the Mike Lowell trade than Max Ramirez.
Beltre does seem like ideal trade bait

And I cant believe Max came back. No runoff. End it now. Leave Beavan off the next ballot.
