Selig: Today is a "hard and fast deadline" for Tom Hicks
Maury Brown has a story up on his website, discussing how Bud Selig says that today is a "hard and fast deadline" for Tom Hicks to decide who the buyer for the Rangers is going to be.
I'm not entirely sure what, if anything, Bud can or would do if Hicks doesn't act by today, but I guess Selig could say, MLB has decided that group X is going to be the buyer, and try to strip Hicks of any decision-making powers whatsoever in this regard.

Well let's hope Bud doesn't get to choose for him...
Not that I trust Hicks, but I’m assuming Bud would select Gilbert.

Bailout
MLB could have included some type condition when it extended credit to Hicks. Otherwise, it made little sense for Hicks to abide by a self-imposed deadline.

I need some positive news today
make a damn decision, and let’s hope that it’s Greenberg

There are not enough profanities to properly enunciate my desire to have Hicks gone.
Tom, if you ever cared about this town or this team’s fans, do us all a favor and pick Greenberg/Ryan, and get the hell out of Dodge.
Oh wait, no one will buy the Stars.
Hicks
will be part of the Greenberg group, no?

I was to understand that's the Jim Crane group
but it might be Greenberg too. As long as it’s minority ownership and we don’t have to see his liverspotted old mug anymore…
it's both groups
Gilbert is the only one that I understand won’t have him as a part of it

I'm sure Bud could
tell the lenders that the franchise is theirs. I really don’t think Hicks would have much say in the matter.

Hard and fast?
Considering the fucking that Tom Hicks has given his team’s fanbase over the years has been painfully long and slow, it seems somehow poetic that the public fucking he is set to receive will be the inverse.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

TR has some ownership updates

"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
TR's predicition
Prediction: Greenberg
1. They are financially solid with local backing.
2. Ryan stays with the team.
3. Hicks is able to stay with the team as a minority partner and be a part of the new group building on what has been started here.

Any chance Hicks picks Crane knowing the rest of the owners won't give it an okay..
..just so Hicks can buy more time to put a group together and retain ownership?
I would, shit man, I don’t know what I’d do if that happened….

That hit me this afternoon as well
and that is exactly what I expect to happen.
Another scenario that I thought up: A sale like this can take up to 90 days to finalize, and either party can walk with little or no repercussion. Tom will take everyone of those days, find a reason to submarine the deal, and come up w/ his own financing.

* Hicks is obviously torn between holding on to the team and selling so he can pay off the substantial debt built up by the Hicks Sports Group. Major League Baseball wants it resolved and debt only gets worse if left alone.
torn? i thought he is pretty much being forced to sell for the second reason
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
HSG is being forced to sell
Tom Hicks personally can remain part of the ownership though, assuming he has the cash available.

Of course
if he had enough money for controlling interest, he could recapitalize HSG. He just doesn’t have the cash to do anything other than be a minority partner.

Not necessarily
I don’t know how HSG is organized, but theoretically there could be some sort of restrictions or provisions in the organizing agreement/certificate of formation that make it difficult or unwise to recapitalize with personal funds.
Or alternatively, Hicks and his financial advisers, CPAs, and lawyers may have decided that it would be a poor financial decision to throw more of his net worth at a troubled entity.

Truth is
Hicks just wants to use other folks money and keep his control. It works out well if you can get away with it. I don’t think he has the personal wealth to recapitalize HSG tho

Pass the Gin
Durrett says Nolan called Hicks this morning to let him know that Greenberg’s group wants to up their offer.
Thus, the Crane-as-ginning-component works, just as Utay’s group did with the Cubs sale.

We're worried this is true
But even if HIcks chooses Crane or one of the others, I’m not so sure this means a sale announcement is sure to follow by the end of the year. The general feeling in baseball is that HIcks is doing whatever he can to hang on to the club. In Crane, Hicks would be choosing a buyer who might have a troublesome path to approval. Already White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf is on record as endorsing Gilbert. Astros owner Drayton McLane is not a fan of Crane’s. Both owners have clout with the ownership committee. If Hicks spend the next 45 days negotiating the parameters of a deal with Crane only to find out he’s not going to get approved, it would buy the current Rangers owner more time to try and put together his own group.
So, it’s still not clear if Hicks’ intent is to sell the Rangers or to buy himself more time.

Yep
I think most people here want Greenberg because the transition period is that much easier. He’s going to keep things in place and likely won’t have problems getting approved. No one else is that easy of a solution.
