Think Hicks staying on could save Daniels' from getting canned. Personality differences with Ryan, more than anything.

I think if Ryan didn't like Daniels

he’d have been gone a long time ago. I’m not sure if I buy this “Nolan waiting in the lurch” idea.

Hicks seems to worship/respect Nolan

If he wanted JD gone, I’m sure it would’ve happened already. I can’t imagine Nolan was scared to speak his mind to Hicks.

Yeah, no doubt

And Nolan and JD have both spoken of a mutual respect for one another and how they work well coming from two different perspectives.

My guess

is that the personality differences stem from Nolan being one of the most blunt people on earth while JD is a world class bullshit artist (“5 step plans” “Fleshing out each opportunity and white boarding it”) and corporate survivalist (“It wasn’t my fault, Buck made me do it.” / It wasn’t my fault, my hands were tied by ownership." “Our minor league system needed to be rebuilt”).

But since you don’t know either one of them personally, I’m guessing you’re just a bigger B.S. artist than you claim JD to be.

No one wants to hear what you think. You have told us more than a 1000 times I think we get it you don’t like JD never have and never will no matter what he does. You didn’t like the Lofton trade because JD never gets any player to help out at the big league level now you don’t like that we are trading a great player that has a chance to help out at the big league level for someone who IS helping out already at the big league level. That's twice you've dismissed this idea JBImaknee.

You said the same thing after the Galloway article turned out to be true and i offered that maybe Galloway is echoing Ryan’s dislike of JD. But this now just makes me more paranoid that JD’s days may be numbered. I hope not, but that would be a big downer after the relief of finally getting a new owner.

This actually makes me feel good

At least as-so-far that this hasn’t leaked to the media. It means the FO is doing a great job keeping things in house.

That being said, Daniels should not be evaluated based on personality differences. It should be based on performance. That would be a very damaging move for this club and its reputation.

by Heebs on Dec 16, 2009 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

I think personality differences are a fair assumption considering the different perspectives the two come from

But personality differences are not a bad thing in a front office. If they cause a clash, then yeah, that’s a problem. But differences help produce a better solution than if you’ve got a whole bunch of group-think going on, whether it’s all saber or all ex-player groupthink.

The Disturbing Part of the Tweet

All I see is people commenting on Nolan/Daniels personality difference.

The disturbing part is that Hicks would somehow save Daniels. If Hicks is a minor investor with no say in baseball operations, then how the hell is he going to save Daniels.

I’m not believing this, but if true, then Hicks has some say in how the Rangers are going to be run in the future.

by Oracle Galvez on Dec 16, 2009 10:19 AM CST reply actions

I don't think it's important

that Hicks is what’s “saving JD”. What I think is important for folks here to realize is that the wonderful marriage they seem to have assumed that JD and Nolan have is maybe a myth. There were minor rumblings in the past about differences and now two different writers both seem to indicate that Ryan is ready to make his own mark (indicating he felt constrained by something before).

You don't understand, Gossip Queen.

I’ve been dead-on with so many other opinions / predictions on the Rangers that I’m not worried about missing on Tiny E.

One of the big reasons we didn’t lose 89 games last year is because Tiny E was so much better than I (and many other non-biased sources like Baseball Prospectus) thought he was going to be. I now believe Tiny E has a chance to be a Robby Alomar type hitter while playing SS and that’s a very good thing for Ranger fans.

Hank F is gone so you need to let him go. That war was fought and lost and every Ranger fan (including myself) will be rooting that Chris Davis does not shit the bed fantastic in 2010.

It is my contention.....

That Nolan gets WAY, WAY too much credit & JD should get more than he does around here.

The addition of Maddux (some credit to Nolan) and the influx of a great amount of much more talented young pitching than ever before, were much more responsible for the staff improvement than any ‘edict’ Nolan handed down. Sure, he gets respect from the pitcher’s (and he deserves that) but without the talent, Nolan can ‘decree’ all he wants, it’ll have little or no effect!

Quick question

In what capacity is Hicks a member of the ownership group? Is it through Hicks Sports Group or is Hicks the man, independently of HSG, putting in his own dough?

I only ask because it seems any persisting link to HSG and it’s leveraging/debt, might weigh this team down in the future…

by MikeEl on Dec 16, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions

The way I understand, he and his family will just be one of a group of local investors

Sounds like it’ll be him personally, not HSG, and he’s just going to contribute a share of capital/reap a share of profits, nothing more.

Not sure exactly what form the ownership group will have, but a lot of clubs have an LLP or an LP format

Whereas you’ve got one managing partner who is the “face” of the ownership group to the outside public and then you’ve got limited partners who have a financial interest but are prohibited, by law, from exerting any influence into the day-to-day management of the business. Otherwise, they lose their limited liability.

I think it really depends on the personality of the owner/majority owner.

The undeniable face of the Red Sox is Epstein, with the Rangers it probably will be Nolan. With other teams it’s the owner himself.

by FuturePants on Dec 16, 2009 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

When I say "face" I mean face of the ownership group, not the club itself or the front office

The Giants and Cardinals come to mind as an example of clubs having a “face” represented as the owner when, in reality, he’s just the managing partner and the club has numerous shareholders/partners.

Speaking of, while sharing the news with my friend last night that Greenberg got the bid to buy the team, this friend of his started ranting about how much he hates the Rangers and refuses to go to a game as long as George W. Bush owns the team. My friend and I were like, “Dude, that was like 15 years ago.”

Is that common? Do people still think Bush owns this team? It kind of blew my mind.

by FuturePants on Dec 16, 2009 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

I would say that he's in a minority if he's still that confused

Bush’s ownership group is a good example. Bush was the “owner” to most people but he only owned like 12% when they sold out to Hicks. I forget the level of ownership Schieffer and Rose had, but Richard Rainwater was the main financier of the deal. Bush became the “face” of the group because he put the group together.

JD was hired by Hicks because he impressed him, not with his baseball acumen but by his perceived intelligence, low salary demands and ability to tell Hicks what he wanted to hear. Because JD was an Ivy Leaguer, he could bullshit Hicks all day long because Hicks didn’t know better.

With Nolan in charge, there’s a new ballgame.

JD won’t be able to bullshit Nolan by saying $ 27 million for Cat, Gagne & Lofton is a good move for a team like the 2007 Rangers or that signing Broussard, Fukomori and JJennings for $ 10 million is smart for a small market payroll team.

This is where JD is in trouble. It’s an Ivy Leaguer trying to sell somebody with 40 years of different experiences in the Great Game.

JD’s going to have a difficult time trying to sell a real baseball person on any more ideas to get better like the dumbass ideas referenced above.

If JD truly is as good as the LSB Lewinskys believe, he’ll be okay.

JD's baseball resume

before being hired as the GM in Texas consisted of fetching coffee in Colorado and being the personal bobble-head doll of John Hart.

Somebody very close to John Hart (and JD was the right hand man of Hart) either thought trading Ian Kinsler for Larry Walker in 2004 was a great idea or they didn’t have the balls to tell their boss it was a horrific idea.

Neither scenario works out well for JD.

there is a difference between speculating and reporting using sources

It’s difficult to convey which one it is on a 140 character limit. In any case, one individual reporting this should be met with skepticism. If other outlets report the same thing, then we have to take it seriously.

This is just a weird post

This isn’t a “so and so placed a bid and it was rejected for being too low” story, where there are clear facts. It is almost certainly “some guy told me that he overheard that Nolan wasn’t a fan of JD, but Hicks really is and because Hicks will be part of the ownership group JD is still safe.” It’s gossip about what different people think about one another. About people who play things close to their vests.

In other words, this is exactly the type of “insight” that needs some backing up with more facts than a little twitter blurb, otherwise I’m just going to assume that it is hearsay biased by people’s preconceptions. As it is, all it really amounts to is what appears to be an unfounded guess on the intra-FO politics that will give him an easy “I told you so” a few years from now.

TR

He writes for the Rangers’ website. He’s not going to be critical.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve worked in media, but this just seems like common sense to me. I’m not sure why so many people here act like it’s this mind-blowing concept that people who depend on access to a source for their livelihood (writers for a team website or beat writers, for example) tend not to bite the hand that feeds them.

"Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

But what TR

wrote is complete bullshit.

Why would I ever take anything TR Sullivan wrote again seriously in my life?

It’s one thing to not bite the hand that feeds you but TR is throwing away any shred of dignity he may have left and is gladly sucking off Tom Hicks in public.

bite the hand that feeds him

the only thing is, now that Hicks is out, there’s no reason for TR to continue to “allow Hicks to take liberties with his person”. (there are many other words I could use).

I think the point is that we all agree Hicks wanted to win. In fact, he wanted to win so much that he fired Bob Melvin for saying, “we can’t win with this roster, we have to rebuild”. The problem is that Hicks is a very rich Forrest Gump. Without the pingpong or the magic touch….

He fired a gm who wanted to rebuild, then he hired 2 gms who couldn’t get along, then fired them both and promoted Daniels. He signed A-Rod, then realized he couldn’t afford him (because he was trying to win without a strong base of a farm system). then trashed A-Rod to the point that he ruined his trade value.

by iblum on Dec 16, 2009 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Your memory is a little off
In fact, he wanted to win so much that he fired Bob Melvin for saying…

1. Doug Melvin, not Bob.

He fired a gm who wanted to rebuild, then he hired 2 gms who couldn’t get along, then fired them both and promoted Daniels

2. Neither Hart nor Fuson were fired.

He signed A-Rod, then realized he couldn’t afford him (because he was trying to win without a strong base of a farm system). then trashed A-Rod to the point that he ruined his trade value.

3. Arod was traded because Arod asked for it, and because Hicks and Bitchtits were such good pals that Hicks somehow felt he owed it to Bitchtits. Hicks was actually in Arod’s wedding. They were big pals and whatnot.

4. Hicks never trashed Arod. He did totally handcuff Hart’s hands by further agreeing to Bitchtits’ demands to only go to NY or Bawstun (brilliant play Hicksie!). Hicks did fuck up the trade with Boston, but that was because of John Henry getting fed up with his constant leaks to the media about the negotiations.

(because he was trying to win without a strong base of a farm system).

5. What?

Well, he was smart to fire Doug Melvin

but for the wrong reason. If you are gonna rebuild, you don’t want to turn the keys over to someone with such a miserable record with the draft and undrafted free agents. One of the reasons we sucked so hard in the ‘00s was Melvin’s pathetic record with player development.

Given that

we were a 85ish win last year, I don’t think it’s too outrageous to suggest that we can be an 79-81 win team next year pretty easily. If Ian goes out for awhile or Josh doesn’t rebound or Harden falls wrong, it might even be pretty likely.

If his margin of error is -5-7 wins, I don’t think we need to tank for him to be fired. If the Rangers are a 79 win team and JD gets canned, I think he’d be quite hot property,

Well not every team is going to fire their GM regardless of who is on the market

But like I said above, I think its pretty reasonable to assume that any team that is unhappy with their GM would be happy giving JD a shot. Especially because any team looking for a new GM will want to probably rebuild some and that is the one thing even the JD haters can’t say anything about.

What’s the motivation behind the Lowell deal? The Rangers seem to be giving up a decent prospect and trading for a guy who wouldn’t be much better than they could find for less on the open market. Can Lowell really play 3rd if needed or is this a lame “clubhouse leader,” motivated move?
I think it’s more about adding a stable offensive force. He takes some pressure off some younger guys and Boston is eating most of that salary. If he’s healthy and that’s a big if he can still bring a lot to the table offensively

Any chance they’re saying this to keep Hicks in a balanced light?… As he is still retaining a piece of the club and is very much public enemy #1?

by oc on Dec 16, 2009 1:45 PM CST reply actions

I'd guess Nolan didn't run JD the first two years

because Hicks was very fond of JD.

We just won 87 games so the time’s not right to fire JD but if This Thing shits the bed in 2010 there will be no more loyalty towards Hicks from Nolan.

Given that next year is JD’s 5th with the team, it would be beyond time to finally run his ass out of here.

Yep

And it’s “personality differences,” not “thinks he sucks at his job.”

I’m not saying Maury Brown made anything up, but without any specifics, this just comes across as speculation on his part. Evan Grant said that he thinks Nolan & JD have their differences, but that they have a workable relationship. That’s probably just as true as anything Brown said.

Nolan may respect JD, and may like the job he’s doing; they may also be very different personalities with different philosophies, and sometimes that’s hard to reconcile even if you don’t have any issues with a person’s performance.

Josey I understand you don't like some of the moves J Daniels is making

but I don’t see how you can say overall he is doing such a tremendously bad job as a GM. You make is sound like he is running the team into the ground with the moves he has made these last few years.

His first year was an increase in wins followed by a terrible 75-87 record. But after that, he helped to improve the team by 4 wins to 79-83 and then 8 more wins to 87-75. So for the last two years plus, the team has moved forward in wins with a dwindling payroll and also building one of the most coveted farm systems. I just can’t understand why you would want to run a guy out of town that is moving the team forward like this.

My line of reasoning is very simplistic in using wins as a measuring stick for success, but I feel taking a step back from the WAR, ERA+, etc. and just looking at the big picture of what he has done would do us all some good. What he has done for this team lately has been pretty good and has us moving forward. It’s not something that would cause the ownership to “run his ass out of here” if he there was a bad year in 2010. And who is to say this team won’t be even better than 2009? I’m all about them adding 4 or even 8 more wins to the 2009 total.

Ken_Rosenthal Holdup in Holliday trade was TOR concern over Brett Wallace’s shoulder. He had an MRI, everything checked out fine. Goes to TOR for Taylor.

Wow, didn't realize Bedard was that far down
[Comment From Jason]
Any news on Bedard? Would he be a safer bet than Sheets?
4:13 Frankie Piliere: Tough call. I’d have to see the medical reports but Sheets might be a little safer. A lot of teams looking, don’t think there’s a front runner just yet

Well we know Sheets just sat out a year with an injury

so I can see why he’d be a safer bet than someone like Bedard even though neither are safe bets in any way

Hicks to be 2nd biggest investor

by octoberty on Dec 16, 2009 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

Ryan said there will be a Board of Directors with about seven to nine members. He expects that Tom Hicks will be on that board and Ryan believes Hicks would end up as the second largest investor in the group of approximately 12 Dallas families that will control the team. This is actually sounding kind of mafia-like. I love it.

I'm a little concerned

that Hicks is still going to have some control in what happens with the Rangers. Hicks is the 2nd highest contributor amongst Greenberg’s investors. He is going to continue to be a leech beyond this year and that is terrible news
