Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

INF Esteban German and LHP Clay Rapada both cleared waivers and were removed from the 40-man roster Wednesday. Both were outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City. It leaves the Rangers with 38 players on the 40-man roster.

The Rangers have also signed RHP Geoff Geary and INF Ray Olmedo to minor league deals with invitations to spring training.

No surprise about German

And the search continues for a back up IF that can play SS.

Have we heard anything from the Rangers about Young playing SS

Every single rumor we’ve been hearing about util IFs has us looking at guys who haven’t exactly been known to play SS. It looks more and more like the plan is for Young to be the main back-up. I wouldn’t mind that if we get a good back-up 3B option.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Geoff Geary

I am pretty pumped about this move. Up until last year he was a very consistent middle reliever. There’s a pretty good chance that he’ll have as good of a year or better than half of the relievers that sign million dollar deals this offseason…

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Dec 16, 2009 7:10 PM CST reply actions

"Consistent" is really not how I'd describe Geary

He had a couple pretty good years in 2006 and 2008, but they where sandwiched in between very “meh” years in 2007 and 2009.

I like that we’ve picked him up, as there seems to be some potential there, but he’s anything but a guy who used to be consistently good.

They might just want him to finally get it out of his system.

If the move does work out, it gives the Rangers room to move a starter for some other piece – a catcher and/or someone who can hit lefties.

by NoNameOnCard on Dec 16, 2009 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

But it also makes the dropoff between Fx2 and the rest of the bullpen pretty big (and also increases the temptation to put Feliz there as a consequence). I don’t think DoD should be expected to duplicate his 2009 campaign, and he and Fx2 would be left as the only late-inning guys out there if CJ moves.

Harrison/McCarthy/Holland/Hurley

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2009 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't count Holland as a "rotation leftover"

Harrison or McCarthy… maybe their stuff could play up enough one inning at a time for a late inning role. I see Hurley in the ‘pen eventually, but he’ll have to get healthy first and even then theres no telling how effective he’ll be coming off shoulder problems.

My point is

that we’ve got a ton of guys who are potentially capable of stepping in to fill the role and odds are that at the very least one or two will pan out.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2009 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

That being said

I’d still rather have CJ in the bullpen unless he ends up throwing nothing but shutout innings filled with strikeouts during spring training without hurting himself. And I’d guess the chances of that happening are pretty small.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2009 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

My guess is

The Rangers stick Feliz in the bullpen when CJ has a Kam Loe type spring.

CJ will eventually blow up and go back to the ‘pen, and the Rangers will wind up Brandon Morrow-ing the shit out of Feliz as he takes CJ’s place in the roto, struggles, and gets sent back to the ’pen down the stretch.

You know, the worst case scenario. Always the most likely.

He's not opening the season in Texas as a starter

If he’s starting (and he needs to be, IMO) his innings/pitch counts need to be closely monitored early in the year, otherwise we’ll have to shut him down late in the season.

If you want there to be any chance of him contributing significantly as a starter down the stretch, you need to (A, limit his innings and (B, get him fully acclimated to a starting role, no bouncing back and forth between starting and the ’pen like with Holland.

Only place you can do both of those things in OKC.

And in my estimation

He could probably use a month or two in AAA anyway, to refine his command and his changeup as much as possible.

My guess however, is the Rangers will want him contributing to the big league team as much as possible next year, and hence will start him in the ’pen.

I guess I'm mainly curious to see how it would work out

I hope it works out for the best, but I can’t really see CJ being much more than average (if even that) if he’s put into the rotation this season. It mostly just seems like a waste to put CJ in the rotation over our other capable options who could use the development time more than CJ while giving a similar kind of performance. And CJ in the bullpen helps that remain a strength.

Then again, when dealing with an rotation full of unproven/injury concern guys, its probably not a bad idea to get as many solid options there as possible.

by kumizi on Dec 16, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions

I remember reading somewhere

that they could probably make some small deal for a player and get approval from Chuck and Co. But since they don’t have complete ownership yet, its too risky to agree to any significant deal. So we could probably sign someone on a 1 year /$7.5 million deal (given what they have now to spend) and just get approval from the new ownership group, but guaranteeing more than a few million wouldn’t be possible.

The first time he swings and dribbles a pitch that hit the dirt 4 inches in front of the plate with the bases loaded, we’ll crucify him. I just remember the GDT’s and other threads where we were begging everyone on the team to take a pitch and stop with the 3 pitch at-bats. Vlad does not push us towards plate discipline. Vlad would easily raise my blood pressure 20 points each time he’s up.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?

I'm in

The guy hits like .400 in Arlington

So I guess you want Barry Zito too

That guy was nails in Arlington

Vladimir's dominance at the ballpark is far greater than Zito's

Zito was no better in Arlington than he was at his own home.

And Vlads dominance had nothing to do with the fact he was facing our pitching did it

what was it then?

Vlad beat up our pitching in the past which hasn’t exactly been full of Cy Youngs and Zito was pretty damn impressive in Arlington against our offenses in years past when we’ve had some damn fine offenses.

I said Zito was dominant in Arlington just like Vlad

11-1, 3.75 ERA in almost 100 innings, almost 8 K/9, Held us to a .218 AVG and a 700 OPS.

Given the quality of offenses Zito was facing vs the quality of pitching Vlad was facing I would say they are pretty comparable

And I said that Zito put up similar numbers at home

minus the win%, and better numbers in other parks. Vlad was at his best in Arlington. That is all i’m saying.

OK well I see no reason you needed to interject that since it had nothing to do with my original reply

iblum said he wanted Vlad and cited Vlads average in Arlington. I merely pointed out Zito was pretty good in Arlington too and look how that turned out.

Not to say I wouldn’t mind Vlad but his success in our ballpark should not be the primary reason we sign him. It really shouldn’t be much of a bulletpoint since he was doing that against us and our pitching during that time hasn’t exactly set the world on fire

Vlad at 6 mil...

wouldn’t be my first option, but I’d be ok with it.

Certainly better than losing MaxRam and paying Lowell 3 mil imo.

Geoff Geary

That’s a good non-roster signing. He could be a productive member of next year’s bullpen.
