The Rangers as is right now

Jeff on LL just did a quick overview on the state of Mariners post-Lee deal, and since now that we are waiting for St. Greenberg to officially purchase the team, I thought I'll do a similar thing on where the Rangers are right now in terms of talent level.  This will be a rough estimation; don't expect accuracy, especially given the roster fluctuation at the moment.  Data are taken from Fangraphs and Statcorner in terms of Wins Above Replacement (WAR)

4190888135_6ebd9e4d81_o_medium

Estimations are very conservative, and assume that we have Lowell already.  As is, it puts us at about 82-83 wins based on talent level alone (replacement level is like 48 wins), but with significant upside.  Position players performances are extremely difficult to estimate, so I assumed little to no improvement in catching, modest improvement at 1B, offensive regression from MY, but somewhat offset by defensive improvements.  Hamilton is the hardest-  I think he will play good defense in LF, but not sure about the bat.  Borbon figures to play reasonably good CF defense, or somebody else will take his place.

Harden, if healthy, will outperform the 3 WAR I gave him.  If he is hurt, someone like Nippert should replace him and put up at least 1 WAR, so 3 seems like a decent compromise.  Feldman and Hunter are figured to repeat last year (in terms of tRA/FIP, not ERA).  I think Holland will be better, but assumed only modestly so.  The bullpen is completely unknown, but since the Franky/CJ/Feliz/O'Day quad put up 7 WAR last season, and that we no longer have the Eddies and Bensons in the pen, 4 WAR should be reasonable.

I am usually pessimistic, but if you are more well-adjusted, we are looking at a 85 win talent team.  That's on par with Seattle right now.  Good news is that there is a good chance several players will exceed the estimation (like Hammy, Davis, Holland, maybe even catching), and a smaller chance they will do worse.  Bad news is there is not a lot of room for improvement.  I don't think we are in a position to seriously upgrade any one component on the team.  The biggest projected weaknesses are catching and 1B, but they won't be doing anything there except limiting downside.  Any DH improvement probably won't be that much better than what Lowell will give you.  There is also a lack of high end starting pitching initially.  We are by no means favourites, but at least we should be very competitive, which isn't bad given our ownership issues.

I'd rather his attention be focused on talent

I imagine those video boards cost as much as a pretty good player does for a year.

That’s something you upgrade after you have something to watch on them.

Improving the boards will draw fans and more ad revenue

Which can be used to pay a good player.

people don't go to the game

…to watch a video board. They may advertise on it but how much are they going to get for that and how much of that money will be spent on talent?

If people enjoy their experience at the ballpark they will come back

regardless of what happens on the field. A video board can impact peoples experience and either get them there in the first place or get them to come back

by bigsteve on Dec 16, 2009 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

that's a theory.

Unless you take a survey you don’t know what impact a video board may have. What definitely has an impact is winning, and we don’t need a survey for that.

The number one thing that will improve a fan’s experience is other fans around them having a good time and yelling because the play on the field warrants it.

Not everybody is a rabid fan

The hardcore fans are gonna come no matter what. Its the casual fan who you have to cater to and a video board is something that will help bring in or bring back more casual fans

by bigsteve on Dec 16, 2009 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure that's true.

I would think casual fans get off on being part of a crowd more than they do a video board.

by Black Francis on Dec 16, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I Disagree

the casual fan enjoys all aspects of the event as much if not more than the game itself on the field

something like a nice video board adds to the overall experience for many

what is shown on this video board?

Baseball stuff. Someone who doesn’t care about the game on the field probably wouldn’t care to read material on a scoreboard or watch replays on it or anything else. They might draw more fans if they made the video board so large it’s a spectacle in and of itself, but is that what you really want? Even if they did that, the novelty effect wouldn’t last forever.

It’s a nice ballpark. I agree they could use a bigger video screen but I don’t think it’s going to help attendance. That’s a pretty big leap.

I enjoyed the ribbon board upgrades they made.

I can’t imagine that it would take that much more money to add in a decently-sized board. We’re not talking about a Godzillatron thing here.

If it’s a million or so, go for it. If it’s five million, seems to me like they should get a player instead.

Tennessee put up a pretty nice new one at their football stadium this season for $4.5 million.

well

…they should take money from the stadium budget and add to the baseball operations budget.

If they’re a second or third place team every year they’re not going to draw well even if they had a video board the size of a drive in movie theater.

Prioritize. Win. Draw fans. Add video and crap like that. Draw more fans.

All this talk about who to pick up for DH or how to improve pitching but bottom line

the Rangers’ season next year is going to hinge on the performances of Kinsler and Hamilton. Both need to have strong years to make the playoffs, and if either falter or continue to regress we fall short.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2009 1:02 AM CST reply actions

I think a major upside could be the rotation, if....

Harden stays pretty healthy, Feldman doesn’t regress and Hunter, Harrison(?) & Holland step forward with experience/health……If Feliz & CJ are added (or both, heaven forbid)….maybe, WOW!

If Feliz makes the rotation, he obviously won’t have quite the stats he had out of the ‘pen, but would be an upgrade over what we ran out there last year. CJ has almost ’too many’ pitches for a reliever and therefore ‘thinks’ too much, maybe starting will suit him now that he’s a bit more seasoned. If it somehow happened then Harrison, Holland and Nippert surely stregthen the bullpen.

That said, it could always go the other way……..

I know those are estimate's, but....

could you compare them to last year (or two)……I’m not as adept as most on here with the sabre stuff.

by tklawless on Dec 17, 2009 12:22 PM CST reply actions

I don't have the exact numbers from last year

and is at the moment too lazy to look up, but I believe rough estimates had us at about 76 wins before the 2009 season. A large hunk of improvements from the estimate from last year comes from pitching and defense. We now have Harden; Feldman went from replacement level to above average; Hunter was able to adjust to the majors; the bullpen was much improved; new established position players with good defense appeared in Elvis and Cruz; defensive turnaround occured for Kinsler and maybe Hamilton. All this adds up to a lot of runs saved. If you remember when we were discussion the amount of runs the Rangers were figured to give up before the start of the 2009 season, a large hunk of people thought it would be over 900. There is a lot of improvements there.

On the other hand, the offensive projection now is probably worse than last year’s. Davis, Salty, and Hamilton all tanked, and I am not expecting dramatic turnarounds (though hoping so). MY had a great year, but I expect him to regress, although not to the level we were expecting before the 2009 season of ~750 OPS. Borbon and Elvis should carry their weight, but won’t give much extra. We still don’t have a real DH (we are turning into Minnesota!).

Nevertheless, the pitching and defensive improvements far outweighs the offensive setbacks, which is why the projection looks so much better right now than a year ago.

thoughts on xavier nady?

i know he’s not the sexiest name, but he’s a right handed bat who can play 1B and LF and who had a pretty solid year in ’08. He was out all of ’09 with TJ surgery and will probably want a one year deal to reestablish value…

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
