Ryan the new GM?

From Poochie over at the ESPNDFW:

Greenberg will be involved in the day-to-day operations, but Ryan runs the team on the field. "Nolan is going to have complete authority on the baseball side," Greenberg said. "I have the utmost confidence in him." That's pretty clear. Greenberg later said that Ryan would be the first guy on a Rangers Mount Rushmore and that he knows all the nice things fans are saying about him are because Ryan is in his group and fans are saying "if Nolan thinks he's a good guy, maybe he's a good guy."

Greenberg was asked if he would share his opinion at a baseball operations meeting. He said that wasn't his role. "My role is to have great people in positions of authority and create an environment that encourages them to be their best and let them do their job," Greenberg said. "Fortunately, when it comes to the baseball side, the Rangers are in a tremendous position. To have the judgment, wisdom and personal touch of Nolan Ryan and the tremendous group JD [Jon Daniels] has assembled, the Rangers on the baseball side are the envy of every franchise in baseball in terms of talent. It's not broke, so I won't try to fix it. I'm not going to inject myself in a way that it interferes with outstanding people doing their job."

If Ryan is going to have complete authority on the baseball side, doesn't that supplant JD as GM?

Not that simple, probably

Not every team has a GM running the baseball operations in total. Tampa doesn’t even have anyone with that title, and it seems to me Ryan has been at least setting the overall course if not actually steering already anyway. Doesn’t seem different to me.

Yep
I’m not going to inject myself in a way that it interferes with outstanding people doing their job.

Polar opposite of what Gilbert wanted to do. Damn I’m glad Chuck won.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

Tom Hicks gets thanked for nothing.

Let’s not forget that Hicks is selling the Rangers because he took what should have been a successful and profitable franchise and ran it into the ground. He’s been an absolute failure and is being forced to pass the torch. There is no charity or good will involved in this transaction.

Right, but

Unlike most people on here I don’t think Hicks is a bad person, just a horribly incompetent sports team owner. He didn’t embarrass himself, the team and all its fans on purpose, he just sucks as an owner.

Except

That would be true except his statements are contradictory. Either Ryan has full control on the baseball side of things or he isn’t changing anything. As we currently understand the setup, Ryan has a say, but not full control over the baseball side of things.

No contradiction

Delegation moves down, and his commentary on JD is fairly glowing. Pres = set policy, standards, and goals. GM = staff and implement those goals. Pretty much covers the baseball side. I do think Nolan will exercise more personnel control than in the past, though.

Ryan already had full control on the baseball side of things

Not sure why you were under the impression he didn’t.

I think I'd be more worried about when the Mets

shitcan Minaya for the Jason Bay signing and other things, then come calling for JD.

IF Thad is still here, I wouldn't mind that much.

It wouldn't be a good thing...

for the Rangers to lose either of those guys.

I’d mind it a lot.

I don’t know how long the team will go with JD as GM before Thad gets a GM job somewhere, though. He seems like he’d be an excellent hire for some team.

I think JD even said that he doesn't make decisions unilaterally

and that pretty much all decision are made by committee. I think JD will have the same responsibilities in terms of negotiating and exploring trade possibilities, being the point man, etc. but he will probably get overruled by nolan sometimes.

it is what it is.
