Hurdle
I was out last night and on the tv there was a piece on the Rangers, focusing on Hurdle. I guess it was on FSN; did anyone see this?
I didn't see it, but I like how Hurdle is going about his business as it is described in this blog piece.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
is the next deadline for the ownership
Jan 14 or 15th which would be 30 days out. I remember reading the 30 day requirement. Does somebody have the article etc of the different timelines the ownership is working off of?
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I believe the 30 days thing is to agree to a price
From what I heard the vote on approving Greenberg won’t go before the owners until spring training which means we won’t officially have a new owner till right before the season starts

well, that sucks
it’s not unexpected, but I was hoping something by the beginning of Feb, and we could possibly add a late signing or something. False hope.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Would there be any reason
on the surface that Greenberg would not be approved? Seems like he has a pretty squeaky clean rep and is well liked so far.

but it won’t happen until the owners get together which has been said isn’t until spring training

Fortunately, the Rangers always tell the truth, so believe it!
Well that's just it.
We don’t know – and may never know – what the true structure of the ownership group is. Given that they have not even hammered out their deal yet, they may not even know. I’m getting tired head.

Hopefully, if Hicks trys to weasle his way into any decisions,
Greenberg will give Nolan the authority to give Hicks the “Ventura treatment” and kick his arse out of the office…

So basically Hicks is agreeing to a price
but the “check” will be for that amount minus the value of his controlling interest?
Wouldn’t the banks be pissed that he didn’t sell it to the highest bidder especially considering that the actual cash flow would be MUCH bigger

Technically, Hicks isn't selling the team
Hicks Sports Group is.
He, personally, is putting in some money for the new group to buy the Rangers from HSG.
Unless Hicks personally guaranteed any of the loans that HSG has, he personally doesn’t have any exposure to the banks for HSG’s debts.

Given that he is solvent...

Hicks as an investor...
The way I understand it, the money is going to come out of Hicks’ personal pocket. So he would basically be paying his company (HSG) for the Rangers. The $$$ should work out.
No
The Greenberg group will write HSG a check for the selling price. Hicks is writing Greenberg a check from his personal checking account.

Cubs may send Bradley to Mariners for Silva...
The Mariners have had perhaps the busiest offseason in baseball so far, but they’re not about to slow down. Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that they’re re-engaged in trade talks with the Cubs about outfielder Milton Bradley. Three executives say the Cubs could send Bradley to Seattle in exchange for Carlos Silva, who will earn slightly more than Bradley over the course of the next two seasons (Bradley’s under contract for $21MM, Silva for $24MM).

I really like
Seattle’s offseason so far. I think they have made some definite improvements. The West will be even tougher than I thought thanks to Seattle making some good moves.

the problem with Seattle
is that they now have a GM at least as cunning and intelligent as JD, plus they have money.
If we finally get an ownership group in place willing to spend, a Mariners/Rangers rivalry could really take hold. Until then, we are just the poor kids on the block on Christmas morning.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
True
The West is starting to look pretty scary. All i want is for the Rangers to win the West and the Angels to finish last. Is that too much to ask?

That would be a huge move for Seattle and really suck for us
Not only would they get to unload the dead carcass of Carlos Silva and his contract, they would also get a much needed offensive bat for the middle of their lineup. The Cubs would have to be very desperate to be willing to take that deal, and for the Rangers’ sake I hope they don’t.
I'd be inclined to step up talks with the Cubs
to at the very least keep him away from the Mariners.
Didn't Griffey resign with the Ms?

I am disappointed
I think Langerhans will be a very good value for them. It’s a shame people don’t give him any credit for what he does.
eh
fangraphs had an article stating that Jeff Fiorentino is just as good a bet as Langerhans, and I’d say Fiorentino has the stronger bat as well. He’s a lefty, so he’s not a glaring area of need, but I’d love to see the team sign Fiorentino and Shelley Duncan to minor league deals…I think both of those guys can help a winning team in the right role.

Mariners get Milton
According to the Seattle Times’ Larry Stone, the Cubs have agreed to trade Milton Bradley to the Mariners for right-hander Carlos Silva.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of money is being exchanged. Silva, who is owed $24 million over the next two years, posted an 8.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 30 innings this past season and a 6.46 ERA in 153 1/3 innings the year before. Bradley, owed $21 million, batted a disappointing .257/.378/.397 this season with Chicago but is only one year removed from a career-best .321/.436/.563 batting line. For now, it appears the Mariners have pulled off another excellent deal.
It's been tweeted, it has to be FACT!

So the M's have added Milton, Figgins and Lee
to a team that won 85 games last year.
Giving up Silva for Bradley means they probably still have money available to get more pieces.

The Mariners have had
a terrific offseason so far. The AL West is scary next year. The Rangers are coming off a 87 win in which they should improve based on natural progression by the young players and recoveries from Davis, Hamilton, and Kinsler to an extent.
The Angels have lost Lackey, Vlad and Figgins so far. Added Matsui which is decent. However, they are the Angels and I have learned not to discount them ever.
The Mariners gave up seemingly below market for Lee, perhaps have traded for Bradley, and are not done.
The A’s are pretty well run and you have to imagine their young players improving to the pt to where Oakland is probably a pretty solid .500 team.
I really hope the Rangers find a way to get Vlad or Glaus (less likely) in the fold. Just sucks the money situation is in such a state we cant be big players. Hopefully, next yr we will have deep pockets to go after that final piece after a successful 2010.
By the way, heard you talked to Chris Davis a bit. Pretty cool dude?

And, per espn
Troy Glaus underwent a physical last week and is making the records open to all 30 teams, according to ESPN.
Glaus is hoping to land a job as some team’s third- or first-baseman, and the updated health records should help teams make more informed decisions about Glaus. He missed all but 14 games in 2009 thanks to shoulder surgery and is best suited to an American League team where he has the DH position available.

this was an excellent offseason to have money to spend
the Mariners have twice now found themselves in perfect circumstances to pull of a heist.
Surely there is money changing hands here. Milton was bad, but he wasn’t worth swapping for Silva unless he actually sexually abused clubhouse attendents, started an inter-clubhouse race war, or failed to vote for Colt McCoy on his Heisman ballot.

Huh?
A source has informed FOXSports.com that the Mariners are trying to trade right-hander Brandon Morrow for a hitter.
The M’s have been baseball’s most active organization this offseason but are still in need of a reliable first baseman. They lost out on Nick Johnson, who signed with the Yankees, and don’t seem comfortable with the idea of bringing back Russell Branyan. Morrow, 25, should draw a good deal of interest. He went just 2-4 with a 4.39 ERA over 26 appearances (10 starts) in 2009 but has a great deal of potential.
