Ranger medical staff to examine Mike Lowell this weekend

T.R. Sullivan reports that the Ranger medical staff will be examining Mike Lowell this weekend, with the focus on Lowell's right thumb, which may require surgery.

Of particular interest is that Sullivan says that the Rangers apparently plan on having David Murphy be their primary DH, with Lowell thus being sort of a platoon partner for Murphy and a backup first baseman and third baseman.

A murphy Lowell platoon is fine with me,

just not for 3 mil. He needs to be 100% healthy. Any player should be healthy if they are getting paid that much!

it is curious

that we’ve heard so many times that the trade still might happen even if he needs surgery. if that’s the case, what is the point of all this?

Either we believe he’s healthy enough to help us next season and represent a strong value at $3M or we don’t.

The whole Lowell/Murphy platoon idea is fine, but I think we need one more legit bat added to our 25 man roster, preferably someone who can play in the OF or 1B.

I wish Xavier Nady knew how to take a walk…

but I still really hope Jermaine Dye somehow ends up here.

he wouldn't be so appealing

if he didn’t crush lefties to the extent that he does. Adding Lowell and Dye to our lineup against lefties would be huge.

We also need a backup CF and a backup MI

I’m not sure we have room for another 1b/COF type bat.

by cstorm15 on Dec 18, 2009 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

i think

the whole idea of bringing in lowell is that he allows young to be our backup MI.

as for the CF to platoon with Borbon, a compelling case can be made for Baldelli or Reed Johnson or Brandon Boggs, with Boggs probably making the most sense if healthy…

That roster would require going with an 11-man pitching staff.

Borbon should not be a platoon player

he is an everyday player. if you want to platoon someone, maybe we should get a 2B that can hit against righties. Borbon plays every day.

by NothinG on Dec 18, 2009 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

let the kid play everyday, He wont be great against LHP, but he’s good enough all around there is no reason to let him play through it everyday + signing a guy to just come in and take up another roster spot to play CF against LHP is pretty defeating. Let borbon play everyday, like 140+ games, then play Hambone or German or some other multi talented Util player there the other handful of games.

A Murphy/Lowell platoon at DH most days

isn’t the prettiest, but I do feel pretty confident in getting some good production from them. The only problem is that the DH spot is the only real spot in the lineup to put a bat that can help carry the offense. Murphy/Lowell will give you something around an .850 OPS, but if Davis and Hamilton don’t bounce back, then that’s not going to help the offense much.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I think it is ridiculous to play borbon inb center field as weak as his arm is and make Murphy DH when he is a very good outfielder. Maybe he will get a chancre yo hgo somewhere we he can play in the field everyday. He is better defensively than Cruz and Borbon.

by txmemaw17 on Dec 18, 2009 5:05 PM CST reply actions

how do you figure

i am all for trading murphy though, he has a ton of value with his low salary and i think who we got back plus boggs getting the other playing time would benifit our club overall

by ENDLESS on Dec 18, 2009 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think so

Murphy appears to be someone who would really be stretched in CF.

If Borbon can’t play CF, we need to deal him now.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 18, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

Except

Murphy isn’t a real good centerfielder when he has been put out there.

Murphy is not that great

defensively. Murphy may have a better arm than Borbon, but can’t cover half as much ground. There have been plenty of CFers that haven’t had huge arms. It’s about the ground you can cover.

by NothinG on Dec 18, 2009 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

See Lofton, Kenny. This is actually who Borbon reminds me a lot of. Kenny Lofton was no slouch in his prime.

I think Borbon is going to shut all the naysayers up. I like how the outfield sets up this year, people need to quit whining about it. I think it’s going to be a strength. Hamilton (LF), Borbon (CF), Cruz (RF) with Murphy as the 4th OF and maybe a guy like Boggs on the bench as a 5th OF? I’m down.

Murphs solid, and I really like his arm, Borbon should certaintly have more value as an OF

on defense because of his gazelleness.

Murphy and Lowell

Just for some perspective:

Murphy vs. RHP: .279/.357/.476
Lowell vs. LHP: .301/.363/.503

That would be a decent platoon but I think the Rangers still need another right handed hitter.

I'm happy with that

it lacks in the the shear fear-factor that a Vlad or Thome would add to the lineup, and the OBPs aren’t what I’d want. But whatever; rather than pouting all off-season, I’ll just say that I’m hoping that Lowell is healthy and that I’m ready for 2010 to start.

I certaintly love what improvements murph made to his game last year

maybe he can continue to bring his On base skills up a little more as he fits into this role playing only against RHP.

then it was by the weekend, now its during the weekend.
oh well, enough of that.

anyway, avatar was pretty freakin sweet. I expected a mediocre movie and great effects, i got a good movie and incredible effects.

the slow parts of the movie didn’t bother me at all because you could just get transfixed on looking at the details of the environment they created and the 3d effects. seriously, theres some amaaaazing visuals.

the preceding post was a great success.

2 hours 40 minutes i think.

By the way the budget on the movie had a lot to do with developing new technology that can be used further and sold to others.

Anyway I have a tendency to get caught up in visuals, it seems like some people im reading on message boards are barely phased by them.. oh well, too bad for them.

I think myself

Lowell is worse off than has been let on, and that’s why this is dragging out – either the Red Sox have been downplaying it and are stalling, hoping more time might allow Lowell to pass a physical, or both orgs are waiting to see if his thumb gets better because the Rangers are really obsessed with getting him if at all possible.

My guess is it’s the latter scenario, otherwise we would’ve done the smart thing by now and moved on to Garko or Vlad or something.

Could certainly be mentioned

But I’d think most national writers would detect a Josh Hamilton rebound and improved pitching effectiveness over vet leadership. Once a name is glitzy, it pretty much stays glitzy unless the guy actually tanks.
