OT: Music - Best of 2009
I realized the other day that I had never made a FanPost on this site. I guess after all the times I've made fun of other posters' horrid FP's, it's time for me to throw my hat in the ring and get made fun of as well.
2009 was a fantastic year for music, and now that school is out for me, I actually had some time to craft together a top 20 to share with LSB and the internets. Keep in mind that I lean towards heavier and more experimental music, but there's something for everyone to enjoy in my list. I'd also love to see what everyone else listened to this year, so we can all learn who has the best and worst music on this board, and make fun of them accordingly. On to the selections:

Memory Tapes, Junior Boys, Fuck Buttons, Fever Ray or Royksopp?
Flight of the Feathered Serpent by Fuck Buttons is amazing.

We got Fuck Buttons at the station, but I never listened to it.
I’ll be sure to grab it next time I’m up there.

Animal Collective is seemingly ending up #1 everywhere.
Also, the best Grizzly Bear song to me is While You Wait for the Others. What a great track.
I’ve also really enjoyed Andrew Bird, Wavves, The XX, The Antlers, Fanfarlo, Woods, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Girls, Phoenix, Dirty Projectors and Neon Indian. Maybe others; this is just off the top of my head.
That Phoenix album is good...
so is the Sunset Rubdown album that came out this year.

Oh yeah can't believe I forgot that one.
Sunset Rubdown’s Dragonslayer is one of my faces from this year. December Song is pretty excellent.

Honestly, it was a toss up with AC and Converge
Both are amazing, but I’ve just listened to AC more this year. But it did come out in January, while Converge was October. It should really be 1a and 1b.

I don't get AC or Dirty Projectors.
I think Stillness is the Move is a great song, but I’m not sure I get what the big deal is about the rest of Bitte Orca.
AC I’ve never really understood.
No, no. AC is really good.
Try Summertime Clothes. Haven’t seen that one mentioned.

I didn't get AC at first but give them chance to really grow on you and they're insanely good.
I hate when people tell me things like this (“No, bro, you’ve gotta, like, listen to the music and stuff, maaan…”) because most of the time those people are idiots and the music (or novel/movie,etc.) they’re telling you about ends up being fucking shitty as hell, but with AC I swear to god it’s the truth.
They’re amazing.

I've listened to every album after Campfire Songs (haven't had a chance to hear their first few)
I didn’t immediately dismiss them…I just don’t get it. Sorry :(
Fuck Buttons, Junior Boys, The Clientele
all had great albums.
Hell, I liked the Maxwell album a lot. This was a good year for music.
Pearl Jam's Backspacer...
I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but it’s definitely THEIR best since Vitalogy. The Ten re-issue is awesome too, heh :)
I also didn’t mind the new Alice in Chains.
I like the new AiC, it's pretty good

John Mayer has done nothing but improve.. and he’s gotten away from the whole trying to impress 15 year old girls thing. So that’s a plus.
See, ETID is still one of my all time favorites.
I just know what to expect from them at this point. The fact that they, ABR and PTW are still appealing to me says a lot in and of itself.

Battle Studies is slowly growing on me...
..which might have been his point. Seems like he’s experimenting more with his voice and acoustic guitar than Continuum, where it was more about the electric guitar.
I dunno, the Crossroads cover/remake is my favorite on Battle Studies, but Continuum (and the songs that came out around that CD) are still my favorite of his.

Well...
This was mostly the year of over-produced electro synth-pop by Canadians, French Canadians, the French, and dorks from New England. Good thing I love that stuff!
Anyway, my top 10 (I don’t really think there were 10 remarkable albums released this year) and my favorite tracks from each are:
God Help the Girl (produced by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian fame) “Come Monday Night”
Flaming Lips — too hard to choose a single track
Grizzly Bear “Two Weeks”
The Rural Alberta Advantage “Don’t Haunt this Place”
Camera Obscura “French Navy”
Phoenix “Lisztomania”
Animal Collective “My Girls” (my four-month-old son naps to this song, and only this song, every afternoon)
A Sunny Day in Glasgow “Close Chorus”
Neko Case tie between “This Tornado Loves You” and “People Got A Lotta Nerve”
Dinosaur Jr. “Pieces”
Man...
I love that Grizzly Bear album.
I think relatively, this was a pretty poor year for music, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some good stuff coming out. Veckatimest is exhibit A in that argument.

Music
I haven’t bought a ton of new albums in 2009, but the most recent Isis and Pelican albums both kicked some serious ass. Didn’t hurt that I got to see them play together back in May…

I have the new Isis album. Not impressed by it too much. But I've never been too much an Isis fan.
I do like Pelican though.
If you get a chance, check out any of the Instrumental albums I have up there. You’d really like the new Russian Circles or Caspian, I think.

Project Pat for best rap album?! Are you kidding?!
That’s ridiculous. This year, the best rap album (by far better than Project Pat’s) was Kid Cudi’s Man On the Moon: The End Of Day
baseBALLIN!
Well best hip hop/rap album I had was Brother Ali
But I’m just a big Pat fan. I listened to Kid Cudi and enjoyed, but simply didn’t listen to it enough to consider it in the top 20, much less top rap album.
Pat’s last album sucked, so I had moderately low expectations for it. Thankfully, he got back to great beats and going hard on each song. I loved it.

Blueprint III?
If you consider the Blueprint III a good album, then you dont know rap music. That was some of Jay Z’s worst work lyrically. He’s lucky kanye was willing to produce the majority of his tracks. He even sampled most of the beats. Man on the Moon stood alone this year for being a lyrically sound rap album
baseBALLIN!
If I wanted a sound lyricist...
..I wouldn’t be listening to Jay-Z. If I want really well-produced music with just enough edge to get my hyped before a flag football game, going out or just driving around, then I’ll listen to Jay-Z…and Blueprint III was good for that.

is like saying that Rebirth will be a good album, even after the Carter III

Can we get a little love...
…for the R&B section this year? Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton (very end of 08). Not saying you have to include any of them in your top 20, just curious about your thoughts on anything in the genre, especially stuff that more mainstream people like myself may not have heard of.

Agreed with that.
Takk is such a great album; got an honorable mention in my top 25 of the decade, which are, in no particular order:
Bright Eyes: I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning
Strokes: Is This It?
Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand
The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow
The Arcade Fire: Funeral
Jay-Z: The Black Album
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights
Bloc Party: Silent Alarm
Sufjan Stevens: (Come on Feel the) Illinoise
Decemberists: The Crane Wife
Okkervil River: The Stage Names
The National – Alligator
Radiohead: In Rainbows
LCD Sound System: The Sound of Silver
Beach House: Devotion
The Hold Steady: Stay Positive
The Walkmen: You & Me
Sunset Rubdown: Random Spirit Lovers
The New Pornographers: Twin Cinema
Andrew Bird: Noble Beast
The White Stripes: Elephant
Broken Social Scene: Broken Social Scene
Wolf Parade: At Mount Zoomer
Beck: Sea Change
Yeah, there were a lot of near misses.
This was what I ended up with…going from like 35 or 30 to 25 was verrry difficult. Coldplay Parachutes was probably #26. We also could only pick one from each artist, so albums like The Blueprint, You Forgot it in People, Kid A, Boys & Girls in America, Boxer et al were left off in favor of the other ones from those artists.

Like, for example...
…delving into a fanpost in which you have no interest simply to insult me. It’s childish and you’re quite irritating. If you want to discuss, discuss. However, you don’t want to discuss; you simply want to insult me.
Is that clear enough?
Not really.
I have an opinion that all your music (that I know) sucks. But it doesn’t have to be you—it could be anyone. It’s the music.
But that’s beside the point. The real point is that I don’t drop into threads to randomly insult you. I don’t really engage you in conversation because I find you to be dull and devoid of content.
It does seem mildly amusing that you would level this accusation at me not a week removed from dropping by some thread/conversation you weren’t involved in to say “Looks like someone just took First Amendment in Law School!”
by brettgardner on Dec 21, 2009 2:35 PM CST up reply actions
Truth be told, I find it irritating that you lied for years about being in law school.
And amusing that such an innocuous comment set you off so bad. Touchy, are we?
If you were really here to discuss music, you’d do it. Instead, you find my comment, and make a completely pointless retort, with the point being an insult. Don’t rpetend that your comment is discussion in any fashion, because for someone who accuses me of being “devoid of content,” your response to my list was devoid of content, and nothing but rude.
Those who bring nothing to the table should not accuse people of being devoid of content.
I didn't lie for years
I lied for one night and was caught.

Occasionally I’ll hear a good melody or something that interests me, but mostly I don’t get any entertainment out of listening to what is generally considered “the best” of this decade. And I’m not trying to say that that makes me cooler or better than anyone else, it’s just my honest opinion.

I’m a huge Dwight fan. “Tomorrow’s Sounds” is probably his best original work of the decade but I think I’d rate “Dwight Sings Buck” better. I absolutely loved that album.

Brother Ali
Great to see some recognition in here for his greatness. But for me El-P is the man. I know he didn’t put out an album in 2009, but he looks to have one out next year and I cannot wait. He did release a single this year which I’ve been listening to constantly for a few weeks now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9vmkNJBYQo
Plus his label’s pretty outstanding as well. Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock, I.Self Divine, Brother Ali, Cage, the now defunct Cannibal Ox among others
What's the rumpus?
Admittedly, I have heard of very few bands mentioned on here, but I'd like to offer some country/Americana thoughts
Let me preface my comments by stating that I don’t define country as the shallow pseudo pop trash that gets most of the airplay on country radio, I mean the music that still has the true essence of the genre, stories of real life from regular folks. With that being said, here are my favorite 2009 albums:
Roadhouse Sun – Ryan Bingham
I’m glad to see Bingham’s presence on radio and in the Texas music consciousness increasing because I’ve been blown away ever since I heard him the first time a couple of years ago. I actually like the lonesome sounds of 2007’s "Mescalito" better than the rootsy rock of "Roadhouse Sun," but that’s splitting hairs of awesomeness, because the new album is incredible. Highlights: basically the whole album, though especially "Dylan’s Hard Rain," "Country Roads," and "Roadhouse Blues."
Charlie Robison – "Beautiful Day"
I really wish he’d never married into the Dixie Chicks because "husband of Emily Robison" unfairly diminished Charlie’s own talents as a songwriter, storyteller, and performer who was integral to the "Texas music" revolution of the late 90s. Some have called this his "divorce album" discussing splitting with Emily and while it is, it’s more than that too. Highlights: "Feelin’ Good" and "Beautiful Day", both of which have had infinite repeatability for me.
Wilco – Wilco (The Album)
It took a while for Wilco to grow on me. My first experiences made me think they were a little too "out there" for my taste, but I’ve come around to sing their praises and this album has been well-received by everyone. Highlights: "Wilco (The Song)" and "You’ll Never Know."
Lyle Lovett – Natural Forces
There’s nobody in this world like Lyle Lovett and one of my near-term goals is to see him and His Large Band in concert. Lyle can spin storytelling with country, folk, blues, gospel, jazz, and humor in a one-of-a-kind way, as evidenced by "Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel" which contains the great double entendre lyric about a farmer deciding to "choke my chicken." Others: "Pantry" (where he mixes the food double entendres again) and "Bayou Song."
Steve Earle – Townes
A tribute to his mentor and friend, the great Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle absolutely kills with his covers of Townes’ great stories. Highlights: "Pancho & Lefty", "White Freightliner Blues", and my favorite, a duet with his son Justin Townes Earle on the epic, chorus-free story of "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold."
Robert Earl Keen – The Rose Hotel
It would take an entire fanpost for me to sing all of my praises for REK, my favorite singer-songwriter of all time. This new album just adds to the legend of Robert Earl’s laid-back storytelling and philosophizing. Highlights: "The Rose Hotel," "Flyin’ Shoes," and "Wireless in Heaven."
George Strait – Twang
King George will forever be my favorite mainstream singer, even if most of his recent albums pale in comparison to his work of the 80s and early 90s. I list this primarily to promote "El Rey." George breaks out his Spanish skills to cover a classic Mexican folk song backed by full mariachi bands. As someone who loves both George and Spanish music, this was a dream come true for me. The title cut "Twang" is a fun number as well.

Seems like it would be right up your alley.
I can’t share the Strait love, but Earle’s almost made my Top 10… I think I’ve got it at 13 or so at the moment.
Yeah, that was an oversight
I wasn’t working off a comprehensive list of 2009 albums, just kind of winging it with my recollections and I just flat forgot Willie & the Wheel (and probably some others). I’m really glad Willie and Ray decided to put that album together.

New (to me) this weekend...
I put in an album we got, the self titled Girls in Trouble; came out about a month ago. I have listened to it about 10 times this weekend, I really am loving it. It’s delicate and folksey and a chick singing, so take my rec with caution.
Women? In music?!? THIS IS HIGHLY IRREGULAR.

Heh
Well to be honest I generally don’t like chick singers; here’s what I can think of for recent bands (last 10ish years) with girls singing that I actually listen to (as in, listen to more than the occasional odd track):
Girls in Trouble
Inara George
Metric
Heartless Bastards
Cat Power
Beach House
Belle & Sebastian (Sort of counts?)
Headlights
Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Portishead
Feist
Bebel Gilberto

That said, the Mates of State were part of AC Newman’s backup on Get Guilty, which I think is pretty good and enjoyed thoroughly. Speakin of, I’m ready for a new New Pornographers record.

I think that would fall into the odd track I listen to every once in awhile, and most of my listens to said track occur as a result of a rapper sampling it, or during my favorite SNL Digital Short. Don’t have anything against the music, I just don’t listen much.
Ah
Camera Obscura is pretty good stuff, yeah. Oh, and I saw Ida Maria recently; surprisingly awesome.
Well....I don't know much about any of these bands....
but I’m gonna toss out a few of my all time favorites……
Dream Theater – Images and Words
Queensryche – Empire

Great stuff, for sure.
I think Alligator edges it out, barely. Those two are as close to a tossup from one band that I know of… Maybe Kid A and In Rainbows?
Overall decade wise...
probably Kid A or Funeral fight it out. Or maybe Apologies to the Queen Mary wins as an upset bid.
Boxer reminds me of There Will Be Blood. They aren’t the best movie or album by popular opinion regardless of being in the conversation at the time, they’re the ones I like the most, however.
But speaking of music and There Will Be Blood, Johnny Greenwood’s score in that movie is beyond genius.

Riverboat Gamblers - Underneath the Owl
Strung Out – Agents of the Underground
I’ve heard a lot about the Mariachi El Bronx album, but never gave it a full listen.

I have Strung Out sitting in my car, and have only listened to it once. I probably need to go back again, huh?

Yeah I think I listed it as more of this is something I remember
not necessarily the best. I’ve been searching my head all day and all I can think of are…
Thrice – Beggars…shit
Strung Out – solid
Riverboat Gamblers
American Steel – Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts – fantastic
Rx Bandits – Mandala – meh
Big D and the Kids Table – Fluent in Stroll – awful
Rancid – Let the Dominos Fall – unfortunately its growing on me
Mastodon -Crack the Skye – love it
Nothington – Roads, Bridges, and Ruins – fantastic
NoFX – Coster – aptly titled
Shadows Fall – liked Demise, didn’t care for the rest
I just remember this year being disappointing year in music. Most of the CDs I was looking forward to failed miserably. I should probably check out some of the metal bands on this list. I’ve never heard of a few of them, but the ones I have heard of I’m not a fan of.
I’d give the Strung Out CD another spin. A few songs grew on me. It isn’t their best work, but it’s got a much more punk feel than their last couple. I’ve really come around on carcrashradio.
Mastodon was great.
I enjoyed RX Bandits. Thrice I didn’t even bother with, cause I knew it’d be a letdown.
I’ll give SO another spin soon then.
I also forgot to mention Brand New. I was listening to them tonight, and forgot that their new cd came out, and was actually pretty good.
