KLaw chat
A long one, with a question about Neftali Feliz, and Law saying that it sounds like Max Ramirez will be a 1B/DH at Pawtucket if the Lowell deal goes through. Those who think Ramirez is a catcher in the future appear to be pretty significantly in the minority.

I have a feeling [Justin Smoak] starts in the minors, but by the ASB has the 1b job. Patience first, power in the long run.
Can't blame him.

I don't think Law hates him.
not in the sense “I can’t fucking stand that guy, he fucked my wife”. more so “Why are people so high on this guy? He’s not that good”, and quite frankly, I agree.

Law had Davis in his top 100 prospects before the 2008 season
He just suggested that folks tap the breaks on him being an immediate All Star level performer, which resulted in a handful of folks freaking out and saying he hated Davis.

Well..I had a long back and forth conversation with him during last off-season
And came to the conclusion he does not think of him as much of anything anymore. I was hoping for a big year last year just so I could get back to him about it… unfortunately that didn’t happen and I had to grovel for his forgiveness for ever questioning him.. heh.
Yep,
the “Keith Law hates Chris Davis” thought is put forth by completely stupid people. His whole take that started it was based on an idiotic overreaction by a brainless fan.
Allyson, Dallas [via mobile]
Keith, the other day Buster Olney was previewing the AL West and said Matt Holiday is the best hitter in the division. I wouldn’t even put him in the top 5. 1. Hamilton 2. Guererro 3. Ichiro 4. Kinsler 5. Chris Davis, yes Chris Davis. Thoughts?
Keith Law
(1:27 PM)
Guerrero doesn’t belong on that list any more. Hamilton’s better than Holliday. Kinsler is if you’re talking offense relative to position. Wow, that division is really bad.
And Chris Davis … come on. It was fun while it lasted.
I think Law viewed Davis a little more realistically than whoever that moron Allyson did.
Personally, its tough to see Davis as a significantly above average 1B due to his high strikeout rates and low walk rates. He is going to struggle to have an OBP much above 330. Even with a 500 SLG, he will probably be fairly mediocre.

Not quite the wording he used.
I recall a sarcastic annoying tone. And he called me absurd or irrational for saying he was a CD hater, lol. He was. He just also happened to be right for 2009.
the preceding post was a great success.
I posted
the exact transcript of what he posted. I think its clear the sarcasm was warranted by the idiocy of the question/statement.

In context of the question
its just saying that just because he mashed coming up means you are hopelessly overrating him putting him in the five best hitters in the AL West.
I think Davis will look more like Incaviglia, Rob Deer or any of the other boom or bust hitters than one of the five best in the west.

Also…
He’s not that good", and quite frankly, I agree.
When you say “he’s not that good,” what do you mean?
He’s not an All Star caliber first baseman?
He’s not as good as he was in 2008?
He’s not good enough to be the regular 1B on a playoff contender?
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 18, 2009 8:34 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think he's an all-star caliber 1st baseman.
Though 2010 will tell a lot about him as a player, whether he can continue to adjust to major league pitching. I just don’t think he can adjust well. I hope I’m wrong, because that means we would have high production totals from 1st.
I think he’s a watered down version of Ryan Howard, with a good glove, and that to me is an above average 1st baseman.

If he is a watered down version of Ryan Howard...
then he’ll be a very productive member of a playoff Texas Rangers team.
by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 18, 2009 9:11 PM CST up reply actions
I said above average.
Which would be productive, but not very. I think you’re over-estimating Howard’s ability.
He was 6th in the national league in OPS and 10th in OBP.

I don't think the Rangers need...
Chris Davis to be an all star. Or even a nationally recognized “star”. They need him to improve his OBP, sure. But if he were to put up full season at .280/.330/.550 with his caliber of defense at first, that would be a hole plugged.
by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 18, 2009 9:41 PM CST up reply actions
Was it widely known that Davis has a solid glove
when he was in the minors? Because I have hard time basing defensive value off of one years worth of metrics.
An OPS near .900 would be great from him. And since we’re pretty much going to pair him up with Smoak in the future, that’s very high productivity from 1st/DH.
I just have a hard time thinking he can adjust quickly when needed.

I think the fact from him moving from 3rd to 1st was a big factor..

That's pretty much what it comes down to...
if he can adjust to the league adjusting to him. So far, that answer is no. I think that’s the issue with Keith Law. Chris Davis still has a lot to prove and a lot Rangers fans had decided he was already destined for greatness. That said, I’m not ready to write him off yet considering he has had success in the majors and was a fast riser in the minors.
As far as his defense is concerned, once the team figured out third base wasn’t his future, of which he played a majority of his time in the minors, the reports on his glove work at first became increasingly more and more promising as he spent time there. I wouldn’t assume he’s going to win a gold glove but he is a plus at the bag.
by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 18, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions
He was considered athletic enough to play third base once upon a time.
Being a solid first baseman at worst shouldn’t be a surprise in that context, even if he can’t still play third. That’s quite a drop down the defensive spectrum.
If he can consistently do...
…a .280/.330/.550 line, I’d be very happy with that.
I think expecting anything more than that on a regular basis would be being unrealistic, really.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 18, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah...
and that’s the thing. The .280/.330/.550 line is practically what he put up in his stint in ’08. I think what was assumed by Ranger fans was he was going to improve on that dramatically in a full season and be an upper echelon offensive force. Keith Law, however, wanted to see what would happen once the league caught up and adjusted to him a little and we saw how that turned out.
The fact is though, he did put up a .280/.330/.550 line, so it is possible for him to have that kind of production, he just needs to make the adjustments now. If he does, that’s a problem solved.
by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 18, 2009 10:05 PM CST up reply actions
Expecting anything more than that on a regular basis is unrealistic?
I should hope so, because expecting an 880 OPS on a regular basis from a guy like Davis seems pretty unrealistic in and of itself.
For one thing I don’t think he hits .280 over a full season, and for another if he slugs .550 he’ll be among the 15 or 20 best power hitters in baseball.
Considering Davis’s difficulties making contact, .280/.330/.550 sounds more like a best case scenario than a realistic expectation.
I failed my LSB ethics test.

Well, as GOET points out...
…Davis put up, essentially, a .280/.330/.550 line in a half-season in the majors as a 22 year old.
I think you are dismissing Davis way too quickly.

fwiw
Zach Sanders at FanGraphs on what to expect from Davis in 2010.
Really, it all seems to depend on his contact rate when he swings.
2008, or post-callup 2009, contact rate, and he’s a solid major league first baseman.
2009 prior to demotion contact rate, and he’s useless.

I'm not dismissing him
But being an 880 OPS player who slugs .550 is more like what we expected of him going into 2009, and I think we’ve got to temper those expectations a bit. A Kinsler-esque .260/.310/.500 line seems more realistic to me.

"WHAT A SHITLOAD OF FUCK" - LL's "Poochie" on Rich Harden signing with Texas over Seattle
The guy is 23 years old
He has hit at every level, and he’s been young for every level he’s been at.
He was very successful as a 22 year old in the majors.
I think you are overreacting to his first-half struggles last year.
If he puts up a .260/.310/.500 line (which, fwiw, I don’t know is really very analogous to Ian Kinsler anyway), that would be, to me, pretty disappointing.

I'm glad someone with some national cred said it (I know they've said such before). Max, unfortunately, is a semi-butcher behind the plate (all defensive things considered)
Don’t know if he started late as a catcher or something, or just never “got it”…whatever the case may be, I still love the guy’s offensive skill set, but it’s just time everyone realized that he is what he is….

I know, right
Monta is one of my favorite players in the league, but I couldn’t take it any longer… plus he’s a guard who scores a lot of points, but rarely makes 3s, it’s very unique
I didn't think it was that bad
FG% and boards for assists and points.

Very possible.
I made some good trades early, and some iffy-to-poor ones of late. I’ll just see what develops. I felt that with Marreese and O’Neal, I could spare a big to acquire some assists and steals, and I took a gamble that Jefferson will return to career averages.
Could very, very easily blow up in my face. I’m always leery of giving talent to the leader, too.

I'm still confused by the scoring system.
I just see that I’m losing by about 60 points every week, but I never know why and am too lazy to study his scoring system.
I think it just boils down to the fact that I don’t really have any scorers on my roster.
I do appreciate the re-gift of Arenas, though.

According to the report, Fiesta Bowl officials have said they are concerned the Cotton Bowl, which has moved out of its namesake building to brand-new Cowboys Stadium, could bump the Fiesta Bowl out of the top-four BCS rotation. The Fiesta Bowl was founded in 1971, while the Cotton Bowl and the other BCS bowl games have much longer histories in a sport where tradition often holds sway.
As i’ve been saying since the inception of the new Cowboys stadium… do a plus one and add the cotton bowl to the bcs, it makes too much sense.

Because they want to improve their defense. Yet, they also don’t want to trade Dunn. That would be the best way to improve your defense.

Dunn is the worst defensive player in baseball. I was purely noting the irony of it.
They didn’t mention price as much as defense in regards to Damon, and yes, he would only be able to get that price from the Yankees.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
in 09 Dunn's WAR - 1.2, Damon had a 2.2
his defense almost completely outweighs any offensive production.

13 mil a year, that’s what his last contract was for and why he won’t be returning there, He says he won’t take a pay cut. I have a hard time seeing anyone giving him that kind of money though.
I know Dunn is bad defensively, but the guy can hit. I understand the irony in what they said, but I also don’t see Damon coming close to his ‘09 numbers offensively again. I’d take Dunn over Damon everyday of the week.
