Looking at this deal it seems that a lot of it was about lessening the financial impact this season.
I think it’s dumb to pay him 8mm for 3 years rather than 11mm for this one, but my guess is the reduction in immediate financial impact played a huge part in this.

I wonder if this was driving force behind masking some of the money as a "signing bonus".
It’s spread out over the three years according to the article and there’s zero interest, so perhaps this is their way of circumventing the union’s objections?
They can point to the bonus and say, “No, look, with the bonus he’s still making 11mm this year” even though everyone involves knows he won’t actually be getting it all this year.
I just kind of thought it sounded too easy that his salary this year plus the “signing bonus” totaled to pretty much exactly what he’d otherwise be getting this year.

Short-Sighted
I think this deal is rather short-sighted. If the Reds were to take the buyouts for Arroyo and Harang, the Reds would have had about $30 million coming off the books (not including arbitration bumps). Plus, next year’s FA class is much stronger. So yeah, the immediate financial impact must be the driving force for this deal.

Agreed it's likely short sighted, but the Reds likely see themselves as contenders right now.
If freeing up an extra 3mm makes them players for a key FA or gives them the abilty to add salary via trade, then I can understand I guess.
They have some nice pieces in place.
Rolen/Bruce/Votto/Phillips/Stubbs on offense.
Coco in the pen.
Harang/Arroyo/Cueto/Volquez/Bailey in the rotation.
They need some helps obviously, but the Central ain’t exactly the AL East. Health for Volquez and Cueto and a rebound/step forward for Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips and they’ve got a chance I’d say.
I’d be trying to add a good veteran LF’er if I was them.
Maybe this money will allow them to get Dye or Byrd or maybe even Damon.
Or maybe they’re just idiots.

I know he's a high risk to bust because of the strikeouts, but last year he was pretty darn good.
He really impressed me when he came up last year.
He profiles as a Mike Cameron-type… a good/great defensive CF who walks a lot and hits for decent power, but strikes out a lot and hits for a low BA.
Granted it was only 40 games, but he put up a UZR/150 of 28.5 (according to fangraphs) with an OPS of .762.
If we got anywhere close to that out of Julio Borbon this year wouldn’t you cream into your hand and throw it at the mailman in a fit of joy?
I would.

Oh man
D-Tron, I’ve missed your priceless commentary like:

Nobody on this site can match your poetic turn of phrase.

I'd hate to be the mail man on your route
Jeeez, the players JD picked up in the Tex trade have barely made any kind of meaningful contributions to the Rangers in The Show, but the pro-JD crowd is still running around shouting "I told ya so."
Oh, and when did Nick Masset turn into a dominant reliever?
I just looked at his stats and, wow.
This is interesting…
His AVG Fastball Velocity / K’s per 9 innings / BB’s per 9 innings:
’07: 91.6 mph / 4.81 / 5.95
’08: 91.9 mph / 6.24 / 3.77
’09: 94.5 mph / 8.29 / 2.84
So now he’s awesome.
Good for him.
* (He also threw 94mph in ‘06, but it was only 8 innings and he wasn’t K’ing anyone so I didn’t think it was too significant)

what are the stats on his other 20 pitches?
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
It just says "SOL" next to the other 19 on fangraphs.
At first I figured it meant “Shit Out of Luck”, but then I remembered this is Nick Freaking Masset we are talking about here and so it might mean “Speed Of Light”.
Either way I think it’s pretty obvious that he’s the Barbaro of being awesome at pitching.

His BABIP this year was .250 and his LOB% was 80.5
His FIP and tRA still look pretty good, but I’d say he’s gonna regress more than a tad next year.
