The 2010 Mariners as of right now

There has been a lot of concern over the successful Mariner offseason so I thought I would check out their 40 man and do a best guess on their starting 9 , rotation and closer just to show you what it looks like as of right now.  I also included last season's OPS and ERA for these guys.  I know some of you like other stats but if you want them you can go find them.  Anyway, here it is:

1. Ichiro-RF .851 2. Figgins-3b .789 3. Bradley-LF .775 4. Griffey-DH .735 5. Lopez-2B .766 6. Carp-1B .878 7. Gutierrez-CF .764 8. Wilson-SS .693 9. Johnson-C .615

Rotation:  Felix 2.49, Lee 3.22, Snell 4.20, Rowland-Smith 3.74, Morrow 4.39

Closer: Aardsma 2.52

I forgot about Griffey

The fact that they’ll have to play Bradley in the field unless Wak gets wise and benches Griffey’s wrinkled old ass is pretty encouraging in terms of Bradley hopefully missing time.

And also very encouraging for Ian Kinsler, if he’s playing LF.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

What are you talking about?

Saunders is their LF, MB is their DH.

I don’t know why people are putting Griffey in that lineup

Yeah, but they re-signed Griffey remember?

He’s gotta either play LF or DH some of the time. Unless they’re actually smart enough to designate him to the role of a bench bat and not worry about his “feelings”.

He's a bench bat.

With Saunders/Bradley ahead of him, he won’t play LF much. He’ll only get a decent amount of playing time if Saunders is absolutely awful, forcing them to play MB in LF and DH Griffey, or if MB gets hurt.

Well, good for the M's.

I guess I’m just used to our dumbass organization and manager always overplaying playing the crusty veterans.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

Saunders

Just for perspective, he struck out 40 times last year and walked 4 in a brief stretch of games. He did post a .922 OPS in the minors last season. I’m not trying to pick a fight, just trying to continue to flesh out the 2010 Mariners.

Interesting

Their top two pitchers and hitters can’t be argued with, but the rest of that team is as up in the air as ours. The AL West is going to be a race to the end.

I think so as well

There is no clear cut front runner as of right now.

Once the Angels add a pitcher (Vazquez? Bedard or Sheets?) I'd say they go back to being favorites.

They crushed last year and are set to replace Vladdy and Figgins with Matsui and Wood.

If Kazmir and Shields bounce back a bit, then… well, I hate the stupid Angels.

the hate is shared

for all our division foes.

The Angels play above their pyth every year, but until that trend is bucked and they start to lose, they are still the favorites. We have to beat them to win it. The AL West will take more than 90 games to win the division, and it could be any of the Angels, Mariners, or Rangers that do it.

I saw somewhere a lineup projection for the M's

a couple days ago that suggested they’ve imporoved by about a half a run scored per game. On the pitching staff, getting Lee probably makes up for the regression I’d expect from the back end of the rotation they had last year (Washburn, Aardsma.) I’d expect their defense to regress a bit without Beltre and partly just because it was so good last year.

All in all, I think the M’s, Rangers, and Angels all look like low to mid 80s win teams right now. I expect the Angels to add a pitcher and they still might end up being my pick for 1st place again, but only by a hair.

This puts things in perspective

Obviously they are significantly better now than they were a few weeks ago. But that lineup has some serious question marks; and while they have two legit aces they don’t have much SP depth.

People proclaiming the M’s as division favorites need to hold their horses.

of what?

your very minimal upgrade in an overall team. really scared. so scared, in fact, I might go visit the suicide capitol of the world.

have your moment in the sun this week. When the season starts, the Rangers will pound you like an unrelenting rain causing you to fall into a deep, tear-soaked depression.

Cliff Lee in Safeco is gonna be beastly.

I kinda envy you guys in that respect.

Based on actual numbers from last year

Lee is likely a stat replacement for Washburn/Beddard. While I’ll agree that Lee is a better pitcher than either of them, the numbers they produced for you last year are likely equal to or better then what Lee will give you this year.

216 IP of sub 3 ERA ball is something pretty hard to replace.

What do voluntary mean?

Milton Bradley's stint with the Cubs - the dark side

there wasn’t really a bright side, was there?

Seattle should be better next season...

but so should Texas and the Angels aren’t going anywhere either. Not to mention the young pitching in Oakland.

The AL West is shaping up to be the most entertaining division in baseball next season.

And for years to come

I was already looking forward to many great matchups with Oakland’s young pitching against the Rangers’ young studs. Now with Dr. Z in Seattle it looks like they’ll be well run, and LAA isn’t just going to go away.
