Lowell Trade is off

According to Pete Abraham the Lowell trade is off. New Link (non Twitter)

Richard Durrett's ESPN Article.

Evan's Write-up

Don't toss out that Mike Lowell jersey.

According to a major league source, the third baseman needs surgery on the radial collateral ligament in his right thumb and the trade to Texas that was agreed upon 11 days ago is off.

Lowell will have surgery after Christmas and is expected to need 6-8 weeks of recovery time. The hope is he will be ready for spring training.

Budget

I wonder where the budget is sitting right now.

Gotta say this is good news

So who is the target for the right handed DH?

Glaus, Garko, or Vlad...

and I’d put them in that order.

If you can’t convince Glaus to DH and be a backup for the corners then you move on to Garko. If he wants a starting spot at 1B move onto Vlad. Surely Vlad doesn’t want to play in the OF still does he?

Come back Max...all is forgiven.

This feels like an incredibly watered-down version of the Kidd trade.

Vlad within 48 hours is my prediction

as i just said in the other thread heh.

the preceding post was a great success.

I hope it comes true

(though I voted Glaus, but those two are the best available ones now)

On the team site...

T.R.’s thoughts. Says that Vlad wants a two year deal (no thanks) and Dye wants to play in the OF (also, no thanks).

I’m starting to think that Garko makes the most sense.

I'm thinking

Glaus is going to be too expensive too, but I may be wrong. I know it’s not a glamorous choice, but the Garko/Tatis option is probably more realistic. Especially if it’s only a place holder until Smoak is ready.

by BHill on Dec 19, 2009 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

Well every FA wants something they won't get.

I’m sure Garko is trying to find more than a righty platoon DH spot and the rangers better not give him at bats vs righties.

How many options does vlad have at this point… the angels, mariners and yankees secured their DHs. I need to really see what exactly is out there, but when you are a DH there can’t be too many options better than the rangers available.. they either have a dh already or are a worse team in a worse ballpark..

the preceding post was a great success.

Cantu...

I’m interested to hear trade rumors for Cantu start up again.

Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

Why trade for Cantu when you can just get Garko?

Cantu's ability to play third.

is the only reason I could think of, but I would personally prefer Garko.

by BHill on Dec 19, 2009 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, forgot about that

Although Cantu plays third base about as well as I could.

He might be slightly better offensively that Garko though. He’s had 13 and 5 point edges in wOBA the last 2 years, and he’s out OPSed him against lefties too.

So actually Cantu is a marginally better player, I guess it just comes down to what you’d have to give up for him vs. what you’d pay for Garko (if it was a choice between them).

One thing your

analysis neglects is Garko’s Vetranocity©. He almost has a 900 OPS in nine career playoff games. He can teach the kids how to play in the playoffs.

Patience, Patience

I think we really need to wait on this. The best deal last year was the Angels signing Abreu cheap a week before Spring Training. I think they should wait out Vlad… who else is going to give him two years? Mid-January, offer him 1 year 4 million, and I think you get him.

Gomes is an "OF"/DH though

If we’re relegating ourselves to marginal platoon bench bats here, it would make more sense to snap up one of the two that can at least play 1B.

Personally I want to make a push on Glaus at this point though. Veteran-y, can play 1B/3B, and unlike Mike Lowell or Jorge Cantu, is actually a really fucking good hitter if he’s healthy.

if the rangers are fine with murphy as their primary DH then gomes/garko are perfectly fine to compliment him

I don’t know if they are though. between hammy’s injuries and cruz’s wash problem they probably expect him to play the of quite a bit.

And I don’t like gomes or garko at all vs righties.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Dec 19, 2009 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

None of Gomes, Garko or Cantu can hit righties worth a shit

And I hate to say it again, but with Wash filling out the lineup cards… let’s just say I’m of the opinion we need to think bigger than platoon bench DH as well.

I think Gomes could really help this team...

In two of the last three years Jonny Gomes has hit lefties really well. In 2009, against them it was .307/.369/.545. In 2008, he struggled and was at .182/.281/.424 against lefties. But in 2007,he hit .313/.376/.542 against southpaws. For a team going into the season with Chris Davis, Julio Borbon, Josh Hamilton and David Murphy expected to be regulars, a guy who can hit left-handed pitchers seems pretty desirable in my opinion.

Per the USA Today, Gomes likely would have received $2.2 million in arbitration. If the Rangers were already to paying Mike Lowell $3 million, I’d think they’d give Gomes a long look now that the Lowell deal has fallen through.

Even the week before Christmas...

Wash’s problem with Cruz makes my hair stand up. The thought of Wash benching Cruz 6 months ago still drives me crazy. It’s like a little Ron Washington Grinch just snuck into my house. Thanks for the reminder.

Max celebrated today

by going 3-4 with two doubles and a walk.

still, if he’s now widely considered a 1B/DH, I don’t have a lot of faith here.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Dec 19, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

Yeah

Getting a better player than Lowell is definitely better to me than keeping Max. Getting both is awesome, though.

by brettgardner on Dec 19, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

What is sobering

is we now know the approximate trade value of Max Ramirez and it is not impressive. This is why I’d rather just keep him and see if he can provide some cheap power for the Rangers in at least a part-time role until and unless his value increases.

Yay!!!!

Maybe this means we’ll look at guys like Tatis/Hinske/Nady/Thome/Garko/Gomes who are likely to be just as good or better than Lowell for around the same dollars + won’t cost us Max.

About trading for him last year, but I just can’t help but feel “meh.”

And you really shouldn't feel anything else in concern for Ryan Garko, either.

But he would be an OK fit here if he was used right*.

(*and the chances of that are like zero)

He'd actually be pretty freaking sweet if used in a straight L/R platoon.

But you’re right that he wouldn’t.

A Garko/Murphy platoon at DH would give us a cheap source of ~.850 ops production, but no way Wash would ever do that… cause Wash doesn’t believe in platoons, even though they’re awesome.
