Mike Lowell Needs Surgery, Trade Between Texas and Boston is Off

Evan Grant is reporting that Mike Lowell has a torn ligament in his thumb which will necessitate surgery that will sideline him from 6-8 weeks.

That surgery apparently has killed the much-discussed trade between the Rangers and Boston, whereby Lowell was going to come to Texas in exchange for Max Ramirez.

Thus, the Rangers are back in the market for a righty bat to split DH duties with David Murphy.

I know he’s not the example we want to present to the young guys as far as patience and pitch selection is concerned, but if we can get him for 4-5 mil as a DH i would be very excited. He’s just one of those guys that can strike fear in the heart of the opponent. Like a 2005 Gary Sheffield. I think he’s still got another good year or two left in him.

Thome? Vlad? Gomes? Garko?
I’m going with Thome, personally. His plate discipline remains phenomenal and he can bring the power fairly decently. He’s the most defensively limited of the group, but that’s not too much of a factor for me when I consider a DH.

as I said in my “MB to M’s is easy to counter” thread, guys like Glaus and Vlad just don’t have many options left. I know we are supposedly only looking for a platoon split, but let’s face facts here. Signing a guy like Garko or Gomes isn’t going to put us over the top. We need a true impact DH to stick in the middle of our lineup. I will echo DShep here and say that I predict we sign Vlad to a one year deal for around $4.5M within 48 hours…

Dunn

That’s who I would want as our DH. He fits this team pretty damn well, and would crush at the ballpark. He’s a liability to Washington on defense, who has said they aren’t interested in some players because they want to get better defensively. It’s all about money though. Vlad vs a platoon righty

Its a lot easier to acquire someone a platoon righty midseason than a legitimate DH.

If vlad does get injured, I don’t think it would be that hard to work out something for a garko type to platoon with murphy.

I’d rather give vlad a shot and fallback on that option than start with it.

Now the problem would be if he is healthy enough to play but not healthy enough to perform as a decent DH, which has a decent shot of happening.. but given the options I still like the risk.

Jonny Gomes (already posted in another thread)...

Jonny Gomes seems to hit lefties pretty well. In 2009, against them it was .307/.369/.545. In 2008, he struggled and was at .182/.281/.424 against lefties. But in 2007,he hit .313/.376/.542 against southpaws. For a team going into the season with Chris Davis, Julio Borbon, Josh Hamilton and David Murphy as regulars, a guy who can hit left-handed pitchers seems pretty desirable in my opinion.

Per the USA Today, Gomes likely would have received $2.2 million in arbitration. If the Rangers were already committed to paying Mike Lowell $3 million, I’d think they’d give Gomes a long look now that the Lowell deal has fallen through. Obviously if either Troy Glaus or Vladimir Guerrero is feasible, they do have the track records and they can hit righties, which Gomes can’t.

The first sentance of this comment makes sense

It's not necessarily standing pat overall.

It’s standing pat until there’s an opportunity to get a real difference maker. The marginal improvement a guy like Gomes might be over a minor leaguer is just not worth it. Especially when of one of the guys in the minors might surprise you.

In the 2009 season...

Julio Borbon:
MLB
against RHP: .333/.401/.447
against LHP: .125/.125/.125
MILB
against RHP: .340/.389/.437
against LHP: .265/.343/.315

Chris Davis:
MLB
against RHP: .260/.307/.502
against LHP: .189/.235/.311
MILB
against RHP: .357/.464/.548
against LHP: .260/.296/.460

David Murphy:
MLB
against RHP: .279/.357/.476
against LHP: .235/.274/.353

For reasons that I can’t explain, Josh Hamilton hit much better against lefties in 2009 (.327/.361/.536) than he did against right-handers (.239/.293/.372). In the the previous two seasons, Hamilton was much better against righties than lefties, although he hit a respectable .288/.342/.459 against southpaws in 2008.

That being said, having a guy like Johnny Gomes in the lineup over the guys I just mentioned could really help the team. If Troy Glaus is a real possibility for the team though, I’d go with him before Gomes. Same goes for Vladimir Guerrero, if he’s healthy.

I don't see why people are thinking like this

if lowell was healthy, this would probably be a fine trade, seeing as how the rangers probably have a good idea about max ramirez (he of the short 1B/DH variety) wrist situation and lowell might have been the cheapest DH candidate out there. given his consistent production, lowell’s health was the only real issue.

Mike Lowell is a poor choice for DH

The Sox need a corner IF and are willing to pay huge money just to be rid of Lowell, that should be a hint.

Honestly,

the Ramirez thing has little to do with it. Adding Lowell to the roster just gums it up, and doesn’t really bring much value.

any possibility

that the deal goes thorough but with reworked terms? obviously lowell’s value is diminished, but if the sox footed more of the bill and we gave up a lesser prospect, wouldnt it seemingly make sense to be able to bring a guy like him to ST?

I think it may have been a possibility....

If Lowell actually wanted to come here, but it seems he has made it pretty clear that he does not want to.

I want people that want to be here.

LH SP in the division

Angels – Kazmir, Saunders, plus a LH closer in Fuentes
Mariners – Lee, Fister/French/Rowland-Smith
A’s – Anderson, plus 7 other non-descript LHP on the 40 man roster

Seems like the division has more LH pitching than we’ve seen in a while.

And it won't matter what we throw at Seattle.

What with Bradley in the middle of a lineup, and guys like Figgins and Ichiro squirreling around in front of him.

Considering the value they place on defensive versatility

..and seem to want to avoid a DH-only guy, I liked the Lowell trade. His ability to back up young and Davis, along with his production after his return, seemed to fit what they were looking for.
Now maybe they try to convince Glaus to come in to fill the same role, which provides some insurance if Davis tanks again.

I want Pablo Sandoval

(Except he’s the only Giant who can hit and they won’t deal him). Give SF the choice of Davis or Smoak, two of the uncertain to start pitchers, MaxRam, maybe CJ, and two rail cars of Nolan Ryan beef for resale to SFO gourmet restaurants, as well as exclusive rights to Fox SW Ranger broadcasts so they can still watch their Kung Fu Panda from the Bay area, and I’ll throw in free website admin for the 9th District Federal Court for a year (who could refuse that ??).

Sigh – switch hitter with a very high OPS+ ought to fit right in, yet I’d have to ask if he isn’t pretty much a free swinger? Haven’t checked about that.

This move doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Somewhere, you have to factor Justin Smoak into this. If you have a cheaper option who isn’t going to be guaranteed AB’s, it makes it easier to bring up Smoak mid-season and either sit or trade the part-time player to a team looking for a bench bat. Garko would fit into this role.

However, if Smoak is viewed mainly as a backup plan to Chris Davis instead of someone they need to get to the big league team as quickly as possible (with room for a judgement call if Smoak lights up AAA obviously), then it makes more sense to go after a full time DH with Murphy backing up the 2 COF’s and DH.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
