Mariners acquire Brandon League from Toronto

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/blue-jays-to-acquire-brandon-morrow.html

The Blue Jays and Mariners reached a tentative agreement on a swap that will send Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays for Brandon League and a prospect, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Presumably it'd take a solid prospect to balance out the deal.  The FAN 590's Mike Wilner spoke to League and confirmed he's headed to Seattle for a physical, and the Seattle Times' Geoff Baker learned Morrow will take one in Florida tomorrow.

Morrow, 25, has a 3.96 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and 5.7 BB/9 in his 197.6-inning big league career.  The hard-throwing righty was drafted fifth overall by the Mariners in '06.  He made the team's Opening Day roster in '07 as a reliever, and stayed in that role to open the '08 season due to the Erik Bedard acquisition.  He dealt with a shoulder injury that year.  In August of '08 he transitioned to starting.  Elbow issues surfaced in the spring of '09, but once healthy Morrow was back in the 'pen.  He was sidelined by biceps tendinitis shortly thereafter, and it was back to starting in June.  Morrow has a pretty serious injury history in his big league career; it's difficult to determine if the frequent role-switching was the cause or the effect.  He is not yet arbitration-eligible and is under team control through 2013.

League

has good stuff but with some mixed results. Let’s hope he doesn’t turn into another Aardsma for the Mariners. And the PTBNL should be decent since we’re talking about a very young talented player going to Toronto.
Cecil, Romero, Morrow. That’s a freaking nice foundation for a rotation if you ask me.

a little surprising

Obviously we don’t know who the ptnbl is, but it is a bit odd that they are apparently making a deal that they get they would get the short side of for this year in exchange for something in the future. Or at least that is the way Seattle and Toronto see it by putting in the ptnbl. Pretty much all their deals to this point have seemed to be all about this year.

No kidding

BP has Vizcaino as the Yankees #2 prospect, and lone four-star (behind Jesus Montero). If the Braves didn’t want to pay Vazquez, which it would appear they did not, they got a decent return for him.

I just don’t see the value in Melky, but I do love Nick Swisher. The thing is, the Yankees do this and turn around and sign Damon without missing a beat.

If I’m the Braves, knowing that the Yankees ultimately want to unload an OF to sign Damon, I ask for Swisher, David Robertson and a B prospect.

C: Posada

RF: Swisher

Ha!

That made me laugh quite a bit. Love this:

Yankees manager Joe Torre, whose pitching rotation, prior to the mass signing, lacked a clear seventh ace, now has the luxury of starting each of his hurlers twice a season.

“As they say, you can never have enough pitching in this league,” Torre said. “Especially come playoff time. Now, if we make it to the World Series, we’ll be able to start Pedro Martinez in Game 1 and still have him fresh and ready to go for a Game 287, should it be necessary.”

I just think people around here overrate MB

because his amazing year for us is crystalized in our minds. but he’s now a $15M/yr player with the Mariners with a history of injuries and problems with authority/umpires/press.

I suppose when you have a huge budget you can afford that risk, but (and I know I have argued the other side of this) if you have that sort of money, why not money whip Nick Johnson?

they got a potentially useful DH

and unloaded a huge POS in the process. Basically they had $15M (or whatever the exact figure is) allocated to a roster spot and they upgraded that roster spot from a below replacement level player to a guy that at least has the potential to lead the league in OPS. That’s a pretty big win in my book.

will allow him to get that back down to the 4.20 range, and he’s always been an innings eater type.

What's frustrating about the Yankees

is that I feel like their prospects never lose value despite their performances.

People have been talking about Melky as a legit prospect for awhile, now, despite the fact that he doesn’t steal with efficiency, hasn’t topped 752 OPS yet, and hasn’t shown consistent plus-defense.

I feel like the same goes for Phil Hughes and Joba, who have been turned into solid bullpen arms with questionable abilities as starters, yet continue to get “Toronto still waiting for Yankees to include Hughes” rumors.

by BuckyB on Dec 22, 2009 1:56 PM CST reply actions

You're overstating in this case, I think

In this market the size of the contract the Yankees took on matters a little. The Yankees don’t have to offer more than other teams just because they can afford the contract, quite the opposite. They knew the Braves had to deal with someone in the east who could afford the payroll jump. It was a limited market. I would have just kept Vazquez instead of trying to trade him under such circumstances, but they landed an average bat who can play any OF position, and top pitching prospect and payroll relief. It’s really not that bad a deal all in all.

by t ball on Dec 22, 2009 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

So now knowing that it is...

Yohermyn Chavez to go along with Brandon League for Brandon Morrow, I have to say that’s not a good trade for Mariners. Morrow is cheaper and probably offers a little bit more value overall than League and Chavez was Rule 5 eligible. He’s the ultimate lottery ticket. He’s a scratch off.

If you look at the Cliff Lee deal as Cliff Lee, Brandon League, and Yohermyn Chavez for Brandon Morrow, Tyson Gillies, Phillippe Aumont and Juan Ramirez, it’s still a ridiculous win for the Mariners but perhaps a little less salty.

You can’t really look at it like that, however.
