Mariners acquire Brandon League from Toronto
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/blue-jays-to-acquire-brandon-morrow.html
The Blue Jays and Mariners reached a tentative agreement on a swap that will send Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays for Brandon League and a prospect, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Presumably it'd take a solid prospect to balance out the deal. The FAN 590's Mike Wilner spoke to League and confirmed he's headed to Seattle for a physical, and the Seattle Times' Geoff Baker learned Morrow will take one in Florida tomorrow.
Morrow, 25, has a 3.96 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and 5.7 BB/9 in his 197.6-inning big league career. The hard-throwing righty was drafted fifth overall by the Mariners in '06. He made the team's Opening Day roster in '07 as a reliever, and stayed in that role to open the '08 season due to the Erik Bedard acquisition. He dealt with a shoulder injury that year. In August of '08 he transitioned to starting. Elbow issues surfaced in the spring of '09, but once healthy Morrow was back in the 'pen. He was sidelined by biceps tendinitis shortly thereafter, and it was back to starting in June. Morrow has a pretty serious injury history in his big league career; it's difficult to determine if the frequent role-switching was the cause or the effect. He is not yet arbitration-eligible and is under team control through 2013.

League
has good stuff but with some mixed results. Let’s hope he doesn’t turn into another Aardsma for the Mariners. And the PTBNL should be decent since we’re talking about a very young talented player going to Toronto.
Cecil, Romero, Morrow. That’s a freaking nice foundation for a rotation if you ask me.
league is wild
and i think he’s been hurt before. But yeah that trade will be judged on the ptbnl
That's why they call them business sox
I'd rather have League than Morrow
and Seattle gets a ptbnl, too?
Why would you rather have League than Morrow?

I don't have any stats to back it up, but.....
seems like League is always tough on us, while BMorrow did give us this:

Got off my lazy ass & looked it up....
Rangers
vs. League 158/302/158/460
vs. Morrow 277/382/532/914
a little surprising
Obviously we don’t know who the ptnbl is, but it is a bit odd that they are apparently making a deal that they get they would get the short side of for this year in exchange for something in the future. Or at least that is the way Seattle and Toronto see it by putting in the ptnbl. Pretty much all their deals to this point have seemed to be all about this year.

8:17am: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that the Yankees are working to re-acquire Javier Vazquez. The Braves have “always liked” Melky Cabrera and Nick Swisher, Sherman says.

exactly
it is because we can’t spend money that we couldn’t have made that perfectly good offer and walked away with Vazquez.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
well, I believe Vazquez has no trade protection that would have eliminated us as well
I think I remember that he had a no trade clause preventing him from being traded to either of the West divisions.
What a drag it is being broke.
No kidding
BP has Vizcaino as the Yankees #2 prospect, and lone four-star (behind Jesus Montero). If the Braves didn’t want to pay Vazquez, which it would appear they did not, they got a decent return for him.

for one year of Javy Vazquez?
I just don’t see the value in Melky, but I do love Nick Swisher. The thing is, the Yankees do this and turn around and sign Damon without missing a beat.
If I’m the Braves, knowing that the Yankees ultimately want to unload an OF to sign Damon, I ask for Swisher, David Robertson and a B prospect.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
why would the braves care about the yank's next move?
because I think the yanks are actually trying to unload one of their OFs. No arm twisting necessary. So don’t settle for Melky fucking Cabrera if you’re trading away one of the better available starters.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yeah, I agree
I can’t imagine that a package including Melky is the top of Javy’s trade value right now.

8:40am: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that it’s a two for one deal. The money is still unclear, though it would be a surprise to see the Braves pay any of Vazquez’s $11.5MM salary next year.
this was from Heyman about five minutes before that:
The Yankees are closing in on a deal for Vazquez, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). Heyman says the Yankees will acquire Vazquez and Boone Logan for Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and a prospect.
If that’s true…well then fuck. It must be nice to have money.

Then I remembered that they traded for Curtis Granderson. Incredible.
I guess they are currently looking at:
C: Posada
1b: Teix
2b: Cano
ss: Jeets
3b: Bitch Tits
RF: Swisher
CF: Granderson
LF: Damon ??
DH: Nick Johnson

Ha!
That made me laugh quite a bit. Love this:
Yankees manager Joe Torre, whose pitching rotation, prior to the mass signing, lacked a clear seventh ace, now has the luxury of starting each of his hurlers twice a season.
“As they say, you can never have enough pitching in this league,” Torre said. “Especially come playoff time. Now, if we make it to the World Series, we’ll be able to start Pedro Martinez in Game 1 and still have him fresh and ready to go for a Game 287, should it be necessary.”

Torre? is this quote from a couple years back
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I'd just run Gardner out there.
He can defend the shit out of center or left.
On a team as loaded offensively as they are I think I’d rather run a great defender out in left.

I really don't understand...
why the Mariners handled Morrow the way they did.
I think this is a steal for Toronto.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
agree
after the Lee signing, the Jack attack has made a couple of questionable calls in acquiring Milton and now this weird Morrow thing…
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Milton is a good risk
They sold awfully low on Morrow though
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
I just think people around here overrate MB
because his amazing year for us is crystalized in our minds. but he’s now a $15M/yr player with the Mariners with a history of injuries and problems with authority/umpires/press.
I suppose when you have a huge budget you can afford that risk, but (and I know I have argued the other side of this) if you have that sort of money, why not money whip Nick Johnson?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
they got a potentially useful DH
and unloaded a huge POS in the process. Basically they had $15M (or whatever the exact figure is) allocated to a roster spot and they upgraded that roster spot from a below replacement level player to a guy that at least has the potential to lead the league in OPS. That’s a pretty big win in my book.
What a drag it is being broke.
we shall see
I’m sure at points next year Milton will make this trade look like a heist. And then when the M’s are in the heat of an August pennant race, just after the trade deadline passes, he’ll blow a gasket and end the year with a whimper, as he is wont to do.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
to reiterate
Carlos Silva posted ERAs of 6.46 and 8.60 the last two years, and that’s in front of the best defense in the league and pitching in a huge pitchers park.
What a drag it is being broke.
I agree on the huge roster upgrade, and washing a sunk cost
I also agree with clark that Bradley could blow up on them, or be great.

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
but you know pitching in the NL central
will allow him to get that back down to the 4.20 range, and he’s always been an innings eater type.
I don’t like the deal for the Cubs, either, by the way. It was a two sided salary dump, plain and simple. But don’t expect MB to post an OPS close to 1.000 over 500 PA next year. That was an abberation.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
pretend you are a GM
And you are forced to have either Milton Bradley or Carlos Silva on your team. Which would you take and how long would you think about it?
What a drag it is being broke.
yeah, I see you're point
I’m just saying that Milton Bradley at $15M/yr for two years is only a good finishing point when Carlos Silva at $12M/yr for two years is your starting point.
Otherwise, Bradley for two years at that cost is a very risky proposition.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

we don’t know the prospect yet.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Reports say it might be Zach Stewart
who is a nice relief prospect but, that’s all he is.
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
But I think we also need to remember
that the Mariners have handled Morrow very badly the last couple years and his value may not recover. I’d rather just keep Morrow in that situation, so I don’t really like this trade either unless the prospect is pretty high ceiling.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I was afraid of the Morrow - Gamel trade rumors
which apparently were in some sort of discussion awhile back. I’m glad that one didn’t happen as the Mariners would have had a really good bat for a long time. This trade is very meh for them. They gave up the better talent.

What's frustrating about the Yankees
is that I feel like their prospects never lose value despite their performances.
People have been talking about Melky as a legit prospect for awhile, now, despite the fact that he doesn’t steal with efficiency, hasn’t topped 752 OPS yet, and hasn’t shown consistent plus-defense.
I feel like the same goes for Phil Hughes and Joba, who have been turned into solid bullpen arms with questionable abilities as starters, yet continue to get “Toronto still waiting for Yankees to include Hughes” rumors.
You're overstating in this case, I think
In this market the size of the contract the Yankees took on matters a little. The Yankees don’t have to offer more than other teams just because they can afford the contract, quite the opposite. They knew the Braves had to deal with someone in the east who could afford the payroll jump. It was a limited market. I would have just kept Vazquez instead of trying to trade him under such circumstances, but they landed an average bat who can play any OF position, and top pitching prospect and payroll relief. It’s really not that bad a deal all in all.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
So now knowing that it is...
Yohermyn Chavez to go along with Brandon League for Brandon Morrow, I have to say that’s not a good trade for Mariners. Morrow is cheaper and probably offers a little bit more value overall than League and Chavez was Rule 5 eligible. He’s the ultimate lottery ticket. He’s a scratch off.
If you look at the Cliff Lee deal as Cliff Lee, Brandon League, and Yohermyn Chavez for Brandon Morrow, Tyson Gillies, Phillippe Aumont and Juan Ramirez, it’s still a ridiculous win for the Mariners but perhaps a little less salty.
You can’t really look at it like that, however.
