Darren Oliver deal official

Darren Oliver has passed his physical, making his deal with the Rangers official.

59 games is pretty high on the vesting option.

Thats not even automatic if hes healthy all year, depending on how exactly hes used.

Same as its been since the first rumor, I need to see how the other moves go and what other players sign for to view this in context but by itself.. perfectly fine.

I wish at least someone would sign another DH here to move the market along.

the preceding post was a great success.

He will reach the 59 game mark by game #82

Cause The Gut will tell him to use Oliver daily.

It's actually not that many if he's used as a situational lefty

They could just be bringing him in for a batter or two then on to the next arm. I’d expect somewhere around 70-75 appearances for him in that capacity.

by MikeEl on Dec 22, 2009 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

Well thats part of the depending on how hes used

But if we planned to use him like that I doubt we sign him at all. Why would we when hes proven capable as more?

His highest total in 4 healthy years of relief is 63.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Dec 22, 2009 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

…and I don’t think they’d spend that much money for a guy just to face lefties. Not with the way things are right now, at least.

And his splits don't support him being a situational lefty

“Ugh. I called this:

http://www.halosheaven.com/2009/12/1/1181570/lackey-and-figgins-only-angels#26431189

Others averred that Oliver would retire if he couldn’t re-sign with the Angels, but the man lives in Texas, and began his career with the Rangers. Doesn’t take a genius to figure he’d sign with them if the Halos didn’t bite.

Word is that Texas is Vlad’s likely destination as well.

If someone on this board said that in the upcoming offseason, Lackey would sign with the Red Sox, Figgins with Seattle, and Oliver and Vladdy with Texas — plus the Angels would fail to offer Oliver arbitration and to possibly deprive Texas of their #22 pick — plus Halliday would be dealt (not to the Angels), and the Mariners would net Cliff Lee for three so-so prospects they weren’t building around — had someone said all that in October, they would have been met with cackling derision, and taunts of bad faith and poor fanmanship.

Welcome to the bad faith future. It looks a little like the hard luck past. People can try to softpedal it all they like, or raise their rhetorical eyebrows at the prospect of Oliver making $4M next season, but here’s the gist of it:

The weakest aspect of last season’s team was its bullpen. Nothing was more responsible for this team losing the ALCS than the weakness of our bullpen. Yet we just let our best reliever for two years running (both in the regular season and the postseason) skip off to our toughest competitor, and got nothing for it. That’s dumbass shit."

I think it's hard to make that case though, given Oliver's advanced age

He could hit a wall at any time, especially if he gets injured. That’s why giving him a vesting option seems to stupid to me: I really don’t think you can count on him to maintain his 2008 and 2009 production for two years despite our medical staff being one of the best in the league.

I don't know.

Eddie did hit the pine pretty hard the last half of the year. Partly “DL for having the arm of a 70 year old woman” and partly because he sucked. This is probably one guy I don’t think Ron will screw up. He’ll let him hang out in the bullpen with his “veteranery-istic-ness” and use him about 40 times.

Maybe 50.

Hell, I want him to pitch 60 because we probably are deep in the playoffs and Ron is using his experience.

Eddie was underhanding the ball up there last year though.

Oliver should be decent enough early in the season to gain Ron’s “trust” like Eddie did in 2008, and will likely play a prominent late-inning role for the rest of the season no matter if he declines or not (providing he’s healthy anyway).

I'm not sure Ron can find room to put him in that much.

Between O’Day, CJ, Fx2, and Feliz (if he isn’t pitching in the rotationand breaks with the team out of ST). It’s hard for Oliver to get into close games.

Then you have Holland, Bmac, and Domath if the first two aren’t in the rotation for long relief.

I find it hard to find 60 games in there. Again, unless we hit postseason play.

CJ isn't gonna be in the bullpen.

If he is, then this entire signing is a gigantic waste of our limited resources.

As the primary late inning lefty, Ron will find ways to get him in games between or even ahead of Feliz and O’Day (who likely isn’t gonna be anywhere near as awesome next year as he was in 2009). That goes double if the Rangers do the logical thing and start Feliz in OKC (unlikely, but still).

Why is it logical to start him in AAA?

by Darrell McKown on Dec 22, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

So he can continue to work as a starter and have his innings closely limited at the same time.

I think it would greatly increase the chances of him contributing in any significant fashion as a starter down the stretch (vs. just letting him blow people away with his fastball outta the ’pen for the first half).

He should be starting for the Rangers in April. His innings (or, more importantly, his pitch counts) can be controlled just as easily in the majors, and I suspect the 90 pitches he could give us every fifth game will be better than the alternative.

With Harden and Feldman as your top 2 starters

Neither of whom are gonna go deep into games, I don’t see how it would be possible to have Feliz starting in the majors early in the season and properly limit his innings.

Huh?

When did I call you an idiot?

I’m just pointing out the situation here, which I think is pretty simple.

The rotation is already relying on 2 guys who shouldn’t be going past the 6th/7th inning (three if CJ’s in the roto).

One of the things you absolutely cannot do in baseball is burn your ‘pen out in the first half. We found that out in 2008. Considering 2, possibly three of your rotation spots are going to guys that are 6 inning starters at best, I don’t see any possible way of correctly managing Feliz as a starter in the majors without risking a second-half burnout of the bullpen.

It’s just not worth it.

I know it flies in the face of conventional wisdom, but..

I would really like for them to find a way to go with an 8 man BP, to help avoid said burnout. It can be done, if your bench guys are versatile enough. Can’t do it with a dh-only guy, though.

Feldman

The concerns about him going deep into games are overblown.

He was 23rd in the league in innings pitched for the season, after starting the year in the bullpen.

In the second half of the season (a better measure, since he was in the rotation that entire period), he was 13th in innings pitched.

by Darrell McKown on Dec 22, 2009 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

He's substantially less effective the third time through the order

As you can see here.

His 6th inning OPS against did improve from 967 in 2008 to 770 this year, so perhaps you could hope he might continue to improve in 2010, but in his first two years as a starter, he’s shown he hits an absolute wall in the 7th inning (1.357 OPS against in 2008, 1.045 in 2009).

I failed my LSB ethics test.

much of that

…could be contributed to fatigue. As he continues to start there’s a chance he could go deeper. Your numbers suggest a trend, anyway.

by Black Francis on Dec 22, 2009 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps

Or perhaps it’s just because he pitched a ton better in 2009 and in 2008 period. Of course those splits are gonna appear to be improving if he had a substantially better year overall.

I think a good bit of that is fatigue.

2009 was only his second year in the MLB as a starter. He looked pitiful in the 7th and beyond, there’s no arguement there. I really think if he has another year of the Maddux/Nolan workout and conditioning, he can get through that wall.

Regression is probably in the cards, but I think it won’t be too much, especially if he can get his cutter in there more and more and our defense stays in place.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?

Harden and Feldman

Going deep into games isn’t a problem for either of them. For Harden, being healthy for games is a problem. That makes managers treat him with kid gloves and he won’t be going past the 110 pitch mark much if at all. If there was a need for him though to pitch more because of a tired bullpen, he is capable of doing so.

For Feldman, the knock on him is that he can’t go to the 8th and 9th inning but he still averaged 6 innings a start last season.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I don't get this

Why is having 2 left-handed weapons in the bullpen a waste of resources?

I understand the argument that you’d rather have a productive bat.

BUT if they get a solid bat in addition to Oliver, what’s the problem with leaving the two effective lefties in the pen?

by JPenn on Dec 22, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

Resources

The problem with this signing is that pitching depth wasn’t our problem; in fact, it’s probably our strength.

So, if you aren’t going to add a top of the rotation guy, using resources to add a pitcher doesn’t make sense when you could use that money to get a better bat.

by Darrell McKown on Dec 22, 2009 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

agree but

My assumption is they sign a bat in addition. If they do, and he’s productive, the limited resources argument goes out the window.

by JPenn on Dec 22, 2009 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

not necessarily

Reallocating the Oliver money might have allowed them to sign an even more productive bat.

CJ has to be in the bullpen.

There is no way he’s been stretched out enough and we have WAAYY too many viable options for a SP spot than CJ.

I could see Blue Glove being traded though. But even then, we only had 3 players (CJ, Frankie, and O’Day) who had more than 50 game app. And that was probably because Frankie was hurt. We also added Ray who had 46 app. last year.

I like Feliz in OKC, but JD said he was going to break camp with his best 26 players. That has to include Feliz.

Again, I just don’t see the game appearances.

The Rangers apparently believe they can stretch him out sufficently before the season

Because everything indicates he’s going into camp as a starter. And unless he blows up, my guess is he leaves as a starter too.

I asked this in another thread...

But where has there been anyone saying CJ could be in the rotation?

I’ve seen a ton of speculation on this board, but I haven’t seen anyone in the org. say anything about it. And other than this Oliver training, I don’t see any moves that point in that direction.

They Rangers have been saying CJ is going into camp as a starter for quite awhile now.

It’s come up in news articles, chats with JD, pretty much everywhere. Put in “CJ Wilson” in the LSB search feature and you should be able to find multiple references to it gong back a month or two among the frontpage posts alone.

If it wasn’t such an ongoing thing, it probably would be largely dismissed by the majority of LSBers because it really does make little sense.

I just caught up with that.

Appears most of that talk was when I was on my baseball hiatus for two months.

CJ+rotation=bad news IMO

I understand allowing him to compete for a rotation spot because he wants to money and to help more, but he doesn’t have enough great pitches. Location isn’t always spot on with that slider and unless he shows up with a crazy ass cutter, he won’t make it.

So even if he does make the roto, someone good gets bumped into the pen to eat up more appearances. (Holland, BMac, or Feliz)

And back to the point we were discussing, this makes it difficult for Ron to find THAT many appearances for our boy Darren.

I'm on the "what the F is Wash doing"

wagon alot of games too. But I’m really really hoping Wash will have more faith in Maddux and listen to him more. I trust Maddux much more than Wash in how to handle the pen/rotation. Plus maybe Nolan will speak up a little to him.

And I am in total agreeance on Holland. He’s already been yanked around from bullpen to start to bullpen to start too much. He needs to get into a groove so he can find his CY-award winning self.

instead of trading him(unless KC wants to give us Butler for him). I imagine we will have a lot of shorter starts next year, as they try to manage innings for Harden, Feliz, etc. My BP would be:
FF
Wilson
DOD
Oliver
Nippert
?
snyder-loogy if he earns it in ST
The ? could be Ray/Moscoso/Strop/Mathis

I would like to see a rotation of Harden/Feldman/Hunter/Feldman/Feliz or McCarthy. Harrison, loser of Feliz/McCarthy would be in OKC.

But I do believe that Fx2 was overused at the start of the season last year and it contributed, and probably in fact caused his inital DL trip (which in turn caused the succeeding ones). I also clearly remember multiple occasions of Frankie, CJ and O’Day being used three, and even one time four days straight, as well as unnecessarily being used in both ends of doubleheaders. Wash will use and abuse his best relievers even when he’s up by 4 or 5 runs, and I really don’t want to see Feliz exposed to that.

I remember reading something about this last year

I think it was a BP article talking about the knuckleball guy in the ChiSox system, Charlie Haeger I think. Basically, teams are scared to just bring a young knuckleball pitcher up to the majors because a) he hasn’t learned how to get major league hitters out yet and b) he’s going to be just soft tossing trash up there as he learns. So basically, it’s a huge risk to just put a guy on your major league roster and say, “good luck, learn how to get guys out with that knuckler!” Most of your great knuckleball pitchers like Niekro, Wilhelm, Hough, etc. were already veterans of getting hitters out, they just adapted on the fly with a new pitch.

I don’t know that I agree with that mindset, but that seems to be part of the reason why you don’t see young knuckleballers coming through the ranks.

knucklers

Yeah, at some point these minor leaguers need to have some scouts/coaches/managers/execs advocating for them to be acquired/promoted/signed etc. I think a knuckleballer is never going to really have anyone willing to put their neck on the line for them, and they are never going to have sexy stats, so the deck is stacked against them ever getting a shot at MLB.

What a drag it is being broke.

question about knucklers

I wonder if anyone has ever done a study about how a knuckleballer in a ML rotation affects the rest of the rotation? You hear about how facing a knuckler can throw a hitter’s timing off for days afterward. I wonder if that is measurable in some way, and if so, how much benefit does the next day(s) starter get from having a knuckler pitch in front of him?

What a drag it is being broke.

by tricer on Dec 23, 2009 9:07 AM CST up reply actions

That's a good question

Surely there’s enough of a sample size with Wakefield and others who have pitched for the Sox for multiple years that you could generate some sort of conclusion, at least about Wakefield’s effect on the rest of the rotation.

I agree with young guys not being able to get a chance in the majors

because of the risk of getting smacked around in the 1st, 2nd inning if you don’t have it and burning up your bullpen is costly. But I guess I would expect more veterans who are losing their stuff would adopt a kuckler and try to use it sparingly at first and then gradually making it their primary pitch. This way they could add on another 3-5 years to their career.

Millwood is an example I’m thinking of. He tires at the end of the year, so learning a knuckle would help his arm. Plus if he can team that up with a high 80’s even 90 fastball, it would be tough to hit. It just makes sense financially and makes sense if you want to stay in the majors longer.

I guess most major leauge pitchers think the knuckleball is a trick pitch used only by guys who don’t have real good stuff. I compare it to using layups in basketball over being able to dunk. It’s hard to argue with that thinking I guess since only Wakefield has truely been able to use it efficiently lately (other than Canseco and Wade Boggs)

I just think watching Wakefield rake year after year all that money, more MLB vets would go to the kuckle to try and keep that paycheck coming.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?

Joke.

What a misuse of scant funds.

eh

I dont think you can judge this signing on its own. It all depends on what they do for the rest of the offseason. If all they do is sign one of the spare DH/1b and call it quits, then it is absolutley a misuse of funds. But if they intend on flipping some pitching for a bat and Oliver is meant to replace the innings that would be leaving, then I think we would have to look at it differently.

Cant judge this signing in a vacuum

Yes.

you can.

I always love

when a team spends a bunch of its limited resources on an old reliever. Wonderful.

Interesting reading this morning...

“Yanks use 6 prospects to get Granderson and Vazquez, yet keep Hughes, Joba, Montero, Melancon, Romine, McAllister. Not bad.”

But hey, screw the Yankees. Baseball America says we have the best minor league system in the game for two years running.

You really are stupid

The Rangers could have trumped both of those trades with their prospects but how do you sugest they go about paying for them once they traded for them? This is not JD’s or Nolan’s fault this is on Hicks.

Its not even completely on Hicks

What the Yankees are able to do is what only they are able to financially afford (the Red Sox and Mets also to a lesser extent). When you have 4 players on 100+ million dollar contracts and another half dozen or so on big deals, you just can’t afford to take on salary dumps from other teams. The Yankees on the other hand can afford to take on these contracts and then if they need to free up some money, they can trade one of their smaller contracts like Swisher to free up some cash.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
