Wednesday a.m. Rangers stuff
It is still all Darren Oliver, all the time this morning...
Evan Grant offers his thoughts on how the Rangers will use Oliver, and what his addition means for C.J. Wilson potentially going to the bullpen...
Anthony Andro has a story on Oliver's return in the S-T, and notes that he's just the third Ranger ever to have three separate stints with the club.
And BBTiA mulls the Ian Kinsler question, and what we can and should expect from Kinsler going forward...

The Braves are close to a deal with Troy Glaus, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The contract includes incentives. Glaus will play first base for Atlanta.
The 33-year-old Glaus was limited to 135 plate appearances this year due to the effects of January shoulder surgery. He’s played only 38.6 innings of first base in his career, all of them coming in the last two seasons. When he’s right, Glaus is a threat to slug around .500 and hit 30 home runs.

It's too bad
that when JD & Thadwick are running around the winter meetings “fleshing out every opportunity and white-boarding it” they completely whiffed on Troy Glaus.

This is stupid
This is what drives me nuts about you Josey, you make some legitimate points but then you troll around with comments like this. Glaus explicitly stated he did not want to DH and wanted to go someplace where he could play int he field everyday. Ergo he ends up as Atlanta’s starting 1B. Unless the team chucked Davis by the wayside from the get go, Glaus wasn’t coming to Texas. Now you may say they should have done just that but clearly they don’t want to cast him aside yet. Glaus was never a likely option because of Glaus.

I’d be fine with a repeat of 2009 from Kinsler.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 23, 2009 10:10 AM CST up reply actions
I would be, fine with a repeat of either of the last two years.
Preferably ’08 because it was less maddening to watch.
But if we could get ’08’s offense and consistency and ’09’s defense and ’10’s health, it will be awesome.
The 2009 Kinsler reminds me of the '05 Soriano.
The power, the speed, and the terrible K/BB ration. I use ‘05 because that’s when I was able to watch Alfonso the most. They also look alike in their reaction when they pop up. Head down, flailing the bat and trotting with their head still down.
I think Soriano is a very good ball player, but I think Ian can be more than him. If he can just get a better mindset at the plate, know what the situation is, and NOT BE LEADOFF. If there is improvement on any of those 3 things, he blows Soriano’s numbers away and could easily give MY a run for MVP.

Kinsler was an outstanding defensive 2B in 2009.
Soriano was never an outstanding defensive 2B.

And I'd be fine...
with Kinsler repeating that defensive performance. In fact, it would be great. However I’m not okay with him repeating ’09’s offensive performance. For most players it would be a pretty damn good year, but I think we all know Ian is more talented than that and can do better.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
What's sad...
is that Kins probably thinks he had a stellar offensive year just ’cause he managed to belt over 30 homers.
Yes their defense is a difference
I assumed that was a given. I was focusing on the bat approach and offensive production when comparing the two.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
I'm fine with '09 Kinsler too
I just think he needs to understand his role from his position in the batting order. If he’s going to hit leadoff, he shouldn’t be happy with a lower avg and higher HR totals. That was the one thing that I didn’t like about his post-season comments.
I commend the guy for what he accomplished at the plate. Now if he repeats that performance as the #4 or #5 guy, then fine. Kudos! But if he leads off again (which I hope he doesn’t), then he needs to work on his OBP and moving around the bases.
I'm of the opinion that Kinsler (like a lot of his teammates)
was guilty of trying to do too much last year.
Put an OBP machine in the middle of the order and there will be a positive domino effect with the offense.
We’d also be talking about Ian Kinsler as an MVP candidate and one of the very best players in The Show.

I'm not sure I agree
All ballplayers are going to try hard. That’s what they get paid to do and that’s what gets them their next paycheck.
Kinsler was probably more put out by hitting leadoff and that adjustment more than trying to “do to much”. Doing to much would be like him trying to play 2nd, pitch an inning a week of relief, and being in charge of the teams cook book sales.
He’s a major leaguer. I find it hard for players to “do too much”. I also am hoping Kinsler will be that OBP machine in the lineup this year and ALSO being an MVP candidate.

A .245 BABIP will do that
His walk rate was better than his 08 walk rate. When that BABIP goes back up this season, his OBP will follow
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
I think the low babip was a product of hitting so many fly balls
As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, Kinsler had the second highest fly ball pct in baseball. Everyone on that leaderboard had low BABIP. When you pop everything up, not many of those fall in for hits.
What a drag it is being broke.
.245 is below that level
Out of MLB’s qualified hitters last season, Kinsler’s .245 BABIP was last by .008 points. Carlos Pena and Jimmy Rollins were a bit ahead of him with a BABIP of .253. Yes, Kinsler was partially at fault for the low BABIP because of his flyball tendencies, but the reality is that he shouldn’t have been that bad. Next season, without any significant improvement in Kinsler’s batted ball rates, he should still be around the .260 mark.
I also think its premature to assume that Kinsler’s LD rate won’t return to his career average. There might have been some pressing going on, but if he made a bit better contact on about a dozen or so flyballs then his LD% rate looks a whole lot better.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

I hope to never see Kinsler repeat 2009
HR’s aren’t everything. There’s two types of non-productive outs, strikeouts and pop-ups. Kinsler must have led the universe in pop-ups in 2009. The guy has the ability to contribute so much more to the team cause than what he showed in 2009. I hope he can pull his head out of his ass, realize his full potential and take advantage of all of the talents that he has.
by twinkilling on Dec 23, 2009 10:37 AM CST up reply actions
No, HR's aren't everything.
But defense, speed, walks, etc. do. Those pop ups as a number 3 or 5 hitter are sac flys as well and would help out tremendously. K’s are non-productive. Pop up’s into the outfield (which he did more often than not) aren’t always. He will get it. He’s only 28.
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Actually
He was 36th in the majors in popup percentage last year.
So no, he didn’t lead the universe.
The fact that people talk about how he needs to pull his head out of his ass and how he probably thinks he had a great season just because he hit 30 homers makes part of me wish he’d get traded, so he could play for a team whose fans would appreciate that they have one of the best second basemen in the majors playing for them.

Ian and C.J. Wilson
Somehow, they became the whipping boys of the team last season, even though they were two of the best performers on the team.
Listening to Ranger Replay used to make me crazy, because it seemed like half the callers just wanted to bitch about those two.
I don’t get it.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 23, 2009 10:47 AM CST up reply actions
Seriously?
I agree with you that those two received more fan ire than was warranted, but can you honestly say that you watched Kinsler last year and never wondered to yourself if he wasn’t on the Blalock developmental track of swinging his ass off and trying to jerk every pitch down the LF line for a homer?
Didn’t you notice that his approach at the plate, evidenced by career high in fly ball pct and career low in obp, needs work?
What a drag it is being broke.
apperances aren't always accurate.
Can he improve, yes. He had the fourth best WAR for a second baseman last year behind only Zobrist, Utley, and Pedroia. So even if he doesn’t improve he’s one of the best second baseman in the league. I agree his approach can be frustrating because he could be even more valuable.
cause for concern?
Kinsler obp decreased by 48 points and he his gb/fb ratio shifted by 25% compared to the previous season. To me those two things seem to indicate a conscious change in approach.
And I agree that he is one of the top 2b in baseball, not saying that he’s not extremely valuable. But he is at an age where he should be entering his prime production, and I think there is cause to have legitimate concern that his offensive production is trending in the wrong direction because of his approach at the plate. Having lived through the horror of Blalock’s (lack of) development, I’m concerned about it.
What a drag it is being broke.
I hesitate to call it a trend.
He had a very good 2008. He may never match that, but you have to be happy if you get his 09 production every year. I think he had a couple of extended slumps last year, and started pressing. Moving forward I think he’s closer to his ’08 production then his ’09.
It’s funny his defensive improvement more than made up for his offensive drop last year since his ’08 WAR was 4.3 and it was 4.6 in ’09.
Nothing new here
Kinsler has had pull happy stretches throughout his career. Now if he just had a hitting coach who would sit him down and remind him to go with pitches and continue to power through the ball and that as long as he made solid contact, that home runs would come….
There's a difference between...
…concern about a guy regressing offensively during the season, but who is still one of the best players at his position, and turning a guy into a pinata for everyone to take his whacks at.
Kinsler was one of the 3-4 best players on the team last year, and yet people act like he was one of the team’s biggest problems.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 23, 2009 12:23 PM CST up reply actions
CJ is a tough sell.
Not because he was bad, he wasn’t of course, but he is a reliever/setup man. It’s like the O-line on football. No one really knows how good you are, but they know for sure when you get a false start or miss your block when the QB gets a broken leg from your guy.
Ian didn’t hit everyone’s ceiling and CJ is at a tough position where failure is magnified. Eddie, Hank, CD, and 2nd half Millwood stunk waaaaayyy more then either CJ or Ian. I guess you just have to tone out the uneducated masses. (Which certainly includes me at times)
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Not to open up an old scab
but there has never been another player that I can remember who shit the bed as much as Chris Davis did in the first half of last season yet he was treated with kid gloves for the most part. Fans kept talking about how much we needed his defense and didn’t dare mention how much The Black Hole was killing us.
When Ian struggled, he became one of the whipping boys and nobody mentioned his defense and then he had the gall to call out the fans to come out in droves when the team was playing important games in September.

Davis was a half a season out of the majors
and was 22/23 at the time he stunk it up. There was a little more patience with him and if I recall some folks did crucify CD. Not everyone was candy canes and lollipops about Davis as you say. He got his share of heat. Ian got him and maybe a little more because he was more established IMO.
AJM and numerous others have come to Ian’s defense about his defense and other intangibles.
Please don’t make it seem like everyone loved CD, everyone hated on Ian. It’s simply not true. Each had people in their corner and people shotting at them.
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Yeah
I don’t think people really treated him with kid gloves. I was at the doubleheader vs. the A’s when he struck out 6 (or was it 7?) times in a row. He hit a lazy fly to center in his last AB and the crowd gave him the most sarcastic standing ovation I’ve ever seen.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Asking for fans to be consistent on how they criticize players is an exercise in futility. People have been hard on Kinsler for sure, but I think the BBTiA article says it well: it’s so frustrating that he seems to be on the cusp of superstardom, but here he is with a .251.

team officials noticed the change in Kinsler's approach
I remember Sundberg talking about it on one of the radio broadcasts. Basically said that Kinsler had been strongly and repeatedly encouraged to take the ball the other way more often, rather than swinging from the heels and trying to jerk everything down the line.
What a drag it is being broke.
Kinsler has always been a pull hitter
Its not like last season was the first year that Kinsler didn’t go the other way. Sure, it’d be nice if he did and I’m sure the team has tried working with him on it, but you’re asking him to do something he hasn’t done throughout his professional career if not further back.

do you think Kinsler's approach was different last year, compared to earlier in his career?
The numbers seem to say that it was.
What a drag it is being broke.
No, not really
Like I said in my post above to you, the difference in the numbers isn’t that big. A lot of those flyballs that you consider the same as pop-ups were right there near the wall in LF. If he makes a bit better contact on one ball per week, then all of a sudden the numbers tell a greatly different story. I understand that you can say that for a lot of players, but from watching Kinsler and looking at the stats, I think that is all it is.
Outside of your problem with how many flyballs Kinsler hit last season, what issue did you have with Kinsler’s 09 season on offense. He was stlll working counts the same as usual, didn’t strike out that many times, hit for good power, ran the bases at a great rate like always, and was basically his usual awesome self.
I also know you like to compare him to Blalock when he made that horrible transformation from future HOFer to shitty NRI, so take a look at what Blalock’s numbers showed after 04. His walk rate plummeted, he had more balls remain in the IF and began hitting the ball on the ground more, but his LD rate always remained pretty solid until this past season.

I realize that
But is a difference that small something to really base your argument on that he has completely changed his approach? Like I said, I know that you can say that for many players, but with Kinsler, it wasn’t that he hit a bunch of weak pop-ups. They were strong flyball outs, usually to or near the LF warning track. Again, that’s not a change in approach but just a lack of making the better contact he did in 08

he had the second highest fly ball pct in baseball
which resulted in a .245 BABIP.
What a drag it is being broke.
.334 vs .241
that’s how much Kinsler’s BA on balls in play dropped last year. His line drive rate dropped, but not by that much. He’ll rebound into the .270-.290 range in BA next year
his BABIP dropped but I think that is due to his increased fly ball pct
What a drag it is being broke.

Glaus wasn't going anywhere he couldn't play the field everyday...
and he would have been a HUGE injury-risk. If Mike Lowell is “broken-down”, what is this guy? 4 of the last 7 years he has played less than 115 years. He makes MB look like Cal Ripken, and he has played all of 38 innings at 1st.
Maybe Garko is their guy-plays 1st, could be an emergency third catcher and play a little COF if absolutely necessary. Dude does mash lefties, so he and Murph might make a decent tandem at dh.

You're the GM
Glaus says he’ll only sign if you promise him a starting position in the field (barring injury, of course). What do you do?
I sell him on the fact that he needs to
re-establish his market value as a hitter after missing 2009.
I talk to him about what our ballpark can do for a hitter’s value and I cite GMJ, Byrd and Bradley.
I tell him that he will be our primary DH and hit in the middle of this order.
I also tell him that he’ll play 40 games at 1B, maybe more if Chris Davis doesn’t have his shit together.
I tell him that he may be required to play some 3B if MYoung goes down with injury.
I tell him that I expect This Thing to win 90+ games because if he’s healthy, the most glaring weakness on our team will have been finally fixed.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Then I make Glaus my 1B
and Davis my DH.

Is the team better with Glaus at 1B
and Davis at DH than it is with Davis at 1B and this year’s version of Brad Fullmer at DH?
It’s only one year with Glaus and I’m hardly sold on CDavis being a slam-dunk to have a good 2010.

One year, exactly.
Davis helps out the entire team while he’s on the field by picking those balls and saving MY, Elvis, and Ian from errors. Those are runs that don’t show up. Glaus would be a HUGE downgrade at 1b. There is no way he starts at 1b just so we can have him. Then if he gets hurt (a very possible scenario) we wasted all that time of CD in the field and need a DH now.
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
to summarize Mr Ace
No, the team is not better with Glaus at first and Davis at DH. nor is it better with Glaus at first and Davis on the bench. Nor is it better with Davis at first, Glaus on the DL, and Esteban German DHing for lack of better options. It might not even be better with Davis at firstbase, Glaus on the DL, and Smoak at DH at least early this year.
The point is, you have x amount of money. Do you spend it on an injury prone, older guy who refuses to DH when you are looking for a DH, or do you spend it on an injury prone, older guy who is willing to DH. One who hits left handed pitching. And hits well in the ballpark. And is a former all star. Oh, hello Mr Guerrero.
Why?
He’s played 38 innings at 1st in his career. You are letting the players dictate the lineup.

There are other options than Glaus.
Doesn’t really make sense to have both of their bats in the lineup and take Davis’ glove off the field. Not worth it to me. I like Glaus the most out of all the potential DH candidates, but not enough to lose defensive value over.

I agree, but

Hey Adam
The other day you said Chris Ray would have to clear waivers before being sent down to OKC because its been over 3 years since his ML debut. Could you give me a link or show me where it says that because I have always understood it to be the player has no say when they get optioned as long as they don’t have 5 years of service time accrued.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If I'm reading this Wiki article right, then Ray has to clear waivers to be sent down
because he will be entering his 5th year of pro status. It says a player can be sent down his 4th season without having to clear if he has less than 5 years, which Ray does. But this will be his 5th season, so he will have to clear waivers.

I believe that rule is for guys just drafted
For instance Julio Borbon has 4 option years instead of 3 because he signed a ML contract right after the draft so he would run out of options before having 5 years of pro experience.
Ray was drafted in 2003 so he has over 5 years of pro experience. IN 06, 07, and 08 he didn’t use an option because either he was in the majors all year or on the 60 day DL after his injury which means he has options left. However he doesn’t have 5 years of service time accrued yet which means he can’t refuse an optional assignment.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I think you could argue for Neftali at 5.
And, I guess I’m bucking everybody’s opinion when I put Scheppers ahead of Perez. I know Perez has age on his side and Scheppers has an injury going against him, but I think Scheppers has less to prove and has a similar upside, so that seems like a better prospect to me.

You still consider the injuries and age when talking about trades. I think what rooster is saying is that Scheppers is closer to his upside than Perez. I think its more that he is saying if you were offered Martin Perez in a trade before 2009 for Martin Perez after 2009, who would you take.

and really not in a good way:
With Hank Blalock out of the picture, the first-base job is open in Texas. While Smoak has competition, he should become the full-time first sacker by 2011.
How in heck did Josey Wales get a job at SI?
Its hard to see how the Rangers won't be ranked number 1 again
The system still has plenty of depth and 3 prospects in the top 20. Scheppers and Borbon (I believe he’s still eligible) won’t be far behind them and I think there are a few more guys you could argue to be somewhere in the top 100 or honorable mentions.

From Jamey's report:
Crazy Oliver splits: Against left-handed hitters in 2009, he struck out 37 and walked only four (a 9.25 K/BB rate), but they hit .263 and slugged .412. Right-handed hitters hit only .217 with just a .294 slug – but they drew 18 walks and fanned 28 times (a 1.56 K/BB rate).
Of those 18 walks, Oliver has 8 intentional walks. Twice to Eva Longoria, once to Teixeira, Raburn, Loretta, Posada, Russell Martin, and Cuddyer. I think all those guys are either right handed or switch hitters. So the K/BB ratio is 2.8. Not stellar but not completely horrible.

Update to Greenberg Financial Situation
Here’s an update to the link I provided above:
I received a call from someone with the Greenberg group. They couldn’t explicitly comment because of confidentiality agreements, but they deny the report that there is anything amiss with financing and say that everything is going just fine.
Fair enough. The way it breaks down right now, however, is that I have a source I trust and who has no dog in the hunt telling me that there are issues with the financing. I have a party with an undeniable interest in the matter telling me that all is hunky dory. Absent anything new, I am going to stick with the report as it currently stands. Greenberg has a window to negotiate. If he has a deal at the end of all of this, we’ll know that, ultimately, there weren’t any problems. If it falls through, we’ll know differently.

That fact that Coco Crisp will be taking AB’s away from those guys makes me smile.

Especially that son of a bitch Davis.
The Rangers made that rookie biatch into a HOFer last year in the 2nd half.
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
I think Rajii just happened to have
his career year in 2009. He will likely revert back to his career averages (.280 .336 .387) next year.

Off topic...
Did anybody see Derrick Roland’s leg injury last night? Holy fuck that was miserable…
Yes
Future Pants asked me that very same question, then warned me. How could I not look it up?
by Excel Hearts Choi on Dec 23, 2009 3:53 PM CST up reply actions
Seriously be warned:
It is gruesome as all fuck. Davis’ reaction should tell you all you need to know – he flipped completely out.
That is just sick
I still remember Joe Montana’s leg on MNF

You mean Theismann?

Thanks bigsteve
I have beenout of it all day.

It wasn't THAT bad.
I was expecting worse. Those kinds of breaks suck though. Since he actually broke his bone in half and didn’t dislocate it or something. I’m no medical expert or anything, but I’m guessing he’ll probably need surgery and some kind of hardware for that to heal. I broke my arm like that not too long ago (except my bone came through the skin) and that’s what they had to do to me. Should take him a while to completely heal.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
They said his bone broke skin under his sock...
Had to insert a steel rod into his leg to keep everything in place…
The worst part of Roland's injury
Is how audible the break is on the video…which tells you that it must have sounded and looked terrible live.
I refuse to look that up..I get nauseated watching someone hyper-extend an elbow/knee, no way.

Having seen the this one, Prothro, Theismann, and other leg breaks
Not one of them has made me gag like Willis McGahee getting his knee blown out against Ohio State.

That said, that’s really sad for that kid’s college career to end that way.
Man....i bet I watch all these before the night is up.

Okay,....watched it...
Napolean McCallum’s is pretty brutal.

As a Raider fan...
I remember that moment well.
That was just brutal to watch.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Took me a couple of times watching it to figure out what happened.
Yeah, that one is worse. Almost a 90° angle in the wrong direction. You know that hurt.
Jimmy Johnson for GM.
Shaun Livington's injury was gruesome as well.

I thought Joel Przybilla's injury was bad enough for one night.
Then I saw that one. Fucking hell.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
I feel bad for them.
Have to figure we see Sammy D or Camby somehow end up there, right?
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions
Who do they give up then?
They’ve barely got the trading chips with their rotation so limited.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Hmm
I figure the guy to target for them is Josh Boone. Maybe if they agree to take on Najera’s shitty contract, New Jersey will take on Steve Blake and his expiring?
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions
Think they'll deal Miller?
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
They definitely would
I guess the question is: who wants him?
Miller for Nazr makes some degree of sense for both sides.
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions
They love Blake
They’re not trading him
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
They love him?
Why did they sign Miller then?
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions
Because Miller's better.
Their PG situation is really dodgy though. Miller just uses the ball too much to work well with Roy, and Bayless hasn’t developed playmaking skills yet. Blake’s probably the best fit, and he’s the only sort of guy they have who does that.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Maybe they should realize
That their “stars” are the problem, not everyone else. LA is soft and doesn’t dominate like he could, and Roy’s showing that he’d be an awesome Pippen.
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 5:21 PM CST up reply actions
They need a legit #1 guy.
Roy’s terrific, but he just doesn’t seem to scare anyone. Sure, he’s got great fundamentals and he’s very good in the clutch, but he’s not really the guy you have a feeling will drop 40 every game if possible: he seems to get 22/6/7 every night and be done with it.
And LMA takes too many jumpshots. Watching the game last night, right from the start, I thought: “he can have that jumper all night, as long as we contest it somewhat, and we’ll be totally fine”. Of course, the Mavs didn’t shoot well.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
I think the Mavs' prime target in the offseason
should be Joe Johnson. Of course, Wade or Bosh if you can get them, but Johnson is the ideal fit.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Agree.
JJ would be a great fit here but I don’t see happening.
"Stats are like a woman in a fine little bikini. You can see a lot, but you can't see everything." -Dirk A. Tron
But what about the DUST chip?
Johnson would be great though. As would Wade or Bosh.
We all know they aren’t coming here though…cause LeBron will be here instead….
Oh to dream.
Beats me
They aren’t playing him, they wanted Hedo.
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
I remember that
But Miller’s still getting ~30 minutes a night. They haven’t abandoned him.
by brettgardner on Dec 23, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions
I tend to think they felt like they got caught
with their pants down on the Hedo deal. They felt like they needed to do something to deflect attention from that. Miller doesn’t fit with them because of how Roy plays. Blake has been bad this year. Bayless is not a good enough play maker.
I bet the Blazers would give their left nut for Kidd.
In another basketball-related note
With Pau Gasol signing an extension, can we please revisit that trade and declare it a win-win? For a trade that got so much grief, it has turned into a spectacular low-post threat in Marc Gasol, (eventually) Darrell Arthur, and another first in this draft. Add that to the cap relief, and it’s further proof that ESPN knows jackshit.

Didn't know either.
Not bad.

to allow me to watch football after Jan 1?

The worst
thing about the Monday night play was Zorn trying to justify it. After listening to Zorn Monday night, I was honestly wondering how he ever got hired.
